Terry Crews explains fighting his dad for beating his mom and tells the story of his dad rejecting his kiss on the cheek at 5-years-old:
“I remember kissing him on the cheek and I was just waiting for this, ‘I love you son.’ … I said ‘I’ll never do that again.’ And it kind of became where I knew that’s where we were going to be.”

Men of past generations are built different. My father in his own way apologized to me for not being more affectionate. He told me he was envious of his friends that had close relationship with their sons and choked up in front of me. When this happened I was in my 30's. I hugged him, told him we were good and that I was grateful for all the sacrifices he made for us. I told him there was no need to be sorry. It helped that I was already a father at the time and understood the sacrifices a man has to make for his family. We have a good relationship and we are pretty close now. Sucks Terry never truly got that relationship.

5 years old is a very important age. I will never forget my first day of kindergarten. I looked around and the kids were all over the place, COMPLETELY out of control. In that moment I made the decision that I wasn’t gonna have kids. Everyone said I was gonna change my mind. 40 years later and I STILL feel the same way I felt at 5 years old.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I've been grappling with losing my grandfather and aunt to cancer for some time now. You're absolutely right in that there's peace in knowing they don't suffer anymore. Sometimes it's the only solace I can find when I'm missing them the most. I'm sure your grandmother knew how much compassion you felt for them. I know it helps me to think about that in my situation. I hope it helps you as well

His father is jealous of him, and always has been. I wrote this before Terry said his dad was jealous. It's okay to let parents be if they are not good in your life my husband's dad, and he didn't have the best relationship. Sometimes you have to distance yourself to save yourself. I kinda went through a bit of the same things with my father but the big difference is, I knew he loved us. He reciprocated love. His love for his family made up for all his shortcomings. We still miss him dearly. I hope TC and his father can make up and spend what is left of his life together as father and son. P.S. what Shannon said about kids not putting him in a certain position. That goes for parents too. Don't put your kids in a situation where they have to see you as something other than their parent. Respect goes both ways. That's what I always tell my wife. Even when you're disappointed with the kids and have to punish them, do it with dignity. Don't cuss em out. Explain what they did and why it is wrong and then give their punishment if you have to.

The only good thing that came from my father being an absolute piece of garbage with almost zero emotional intelligence is that I learned exactly what I should never be. I love my little girl so much I cannot imagine denying her kissing me in the cheek and being affectionate. I have done my best to make her feel loved always, the one thing I fear in this world is I haven't done enough for her. That is a terrible thing to experience for Terry because I can relate 100%, even to the point that I actually beat my dad for being an abusive jackass.

Absent from day 1, yet this man would get soooo mad when i Didn't kiss his cheeck when greeting. Culture, Love, but life's choices made, the situations what they were. Though i Could have an opinion on how things went, no matter how tough this man was, he didn't force His views of being a man onto the world. For sure he did/still does think a man should be a man. I'm glad let me become my own man. Instead of expecting a copy of himself. "When a child is born. Show it the ways of The World, not Your World."
