Not a fan of Manu by any stretch, but here's a great example where erudition and substance shines in the face of ignorant 'dude culture'. Kunal just sounds tiresome, barely able to sustain a coherent thread of conversation - not surprising, considering he started by boasting he 'doesn't read books'. Painfully obvious that he's not even at a 'Chetan Bhagat' reading level. Here's a lesson for you kids: go out, meet people, have experiences and learn shit. It's not cool to be stupid.

Here's where I disagree with Manu. While it's important to expose liberal hypocrisies and weakness, it is problematic and also naive to equate the immoral use of strength with inefficacy. Fact is that there is way more culpability in sins of commission than sins of omission. When people like Manu expend their energy in undermining the liberal establishment at the cost of ignoring the misdeeds of Modi and the Sangh parivar, they inadvertently cause the more sinister political force to go scot free. I am not saying that we shouldn't pay attention to the excesses of the good people and the consensus they dictate. But can't we be more nuanced in our response? Isn't it important to triage the threats we face? I wish Manu realized this. Liberal elites have failed us, yes. But their capacity for chaos and ruin is miniscule compared to that of the ruthless right wing ideological juggernaut we face today.

Only if liberal elites were truthful and not political correct, the right wing would have been restrained. It is monumental failure of liberals because they seem perturbed over the surge of right wing while it is known that the liberals have handled the discourse unilaterally for ages. In this age of social media, now people have started appreciating different narratives they were unknown of globally but very much known locally. Of course there is fake news and all that jazz, but we must acknowledge some narratives have been suppressed by left wing liberals which has emboldened the stupidity of right wing some times. The best response from liberals would be introspection, self correction and connection to the masses. This would make it difficult for right wings to remain ignorant. When only truth gets to be told, be sure there would be no left and right wing - there would be only soldiers of truth. I wish we all become like that.

More important for left wing is to connect with the masses, the bastion of right wing. Solving the problems of masses would be a great start. May be one can also do things like going out and talking to the members of RSS, understanding their perspective and correcting it when they are wrong and admitting it when they are correct. Even a monthly meeting of two extreme wings at different location would be nice. It is also important to make oneself free from ideology and ponder over why does right wing exist? What are their fears and insecurities? Are those fears valid? If those fears are not valid, how to dispel those fears. Basically, I am talking about conversations that could touch base with the most uneducated, conservative, right wing and would also not look regressive to the most educated liberal. The purpose is to make people more critical and thoughtful about things they hear and say so that they can freely talk about issues without any 'ism'. Sure, it sounds hard but Gandhi employed it quite beautifully. Of course, he failed on many fronts but he also got massive success. We need more mass-friendly, calm, composed, honest and educated liberals like Gandhi, rather than elite, PhD holding, job-secured and many a times arrogant liberals of today.

Ashutosh Kumar I absolutely agree. We forget that we are a representative democracy and change ought to be mediated through leaders. But leaders do not arise in a vacuum. In the absence of a coherent liberal consensus, what will a mass leader leverage? Before we talk to the other side (and how we do it is another big rigmarole. Twitter doesn't help) the liberal consensus needs to be reclaimed. Because of the fault of a few elites, we cannot self detonate. The liberal consensus needs to be enhanced. It needs to be re litigated and retrenched. Only then will it serve as a consistent opposition to right wing ideology. Once that starts happening, I have no doubt that strong leadership will emerge.

I have lived in areas with RSS influence. Although I was never associated with the org, I dont understand where are these ideas and assumptions about RSS coming from. The picture that a lot of people paint here in media about RSS is something I have never seen in real life!
