I wish my father had those philosophy and priorities. I feel so jealous I didn't have those. Then I had an epiphany, everything that happened in my life since I became an adult has been entirely up to me, it has been and it is my responsibility how my life turns out. Agreed. I think that the father really likes Josh, and he knows Josh likes Cher and he doesn't object... And instead always allow Josh to.be in their house. He is also very loving, fatherly and protective of Cher behind that stern and almost critical way of addressing something to Cher. But you can always feel he knows her child way better than anybody. Cher grew up to be a very kind hearted person despite being a brat (rich famous).. I like her father. He is the Father of the century.

I love how the movie shows even the little things that indicates they low key have feeling for each other, like how he always laughs at her jokes, looked at her coming down the stairs when she was going on her date and the scene where she took out her braids and he took off his cap bevause they were "embarrassed" or cared about which person thought about the other. Also I can see how people must think its strange how they used to be step sibling but their parents relationship was nothing serious andb probably just a fling when they were kids. Sometimes I think of how itd be if theyre parents actually did end up together and if theyd still have feeling for one another or if it would be different, but still, they are not blood related and barely grew up with each other. He is not a friend of her dad she had seen a couple times. There's a pretty solid dynamic there. Josh is not a distant relative. Or, Josh and Cher didn't grow together. The marriage was not so long ago and was brief enough to barely share a house (as in, maybe he was already away in college). I must say that among all the chick-flicks and popular girl trope, Cher is the most lovely and kind of them all. The way she took of her father and friends? Her relationship with Josh was so lovely. I believe healthy surrounding does contribute to her emotional intelligence. Her dad also is not stingy to express and admit his girl was the best. So no need for her to be reckless for her father approval. She is just naive and clueless because she is still a teenager but overall she is nice, listen to her surrounding, observant and very smart. I really like her character but I do cringe on the romance a bit not because he is her ex step bro but more so on the age difference. How do you even explain step-siblings to people who don’t get it. His parents fell in love and had him. Then his mom and dad divorced and his mom married her dad, who already had her with another woman, making them in no way related. Now a half-sibling means you share a parent, like a dad or mom. Meaning the dad got 2 women pregnant and those women had his babies. So they share a dad and so then share blood. I have a half brother myself. We have the same dad but different moms. These two have different dads and moms. But through some papers and a ring they are siblings, not through blood. It is uncommon to see step siblings in love in real life, but it is in no way wrong. Well to begin with, it's a screen adaptation of Jane Austen's magnus opum Emma (and there was no sequel to that either). Secondly, the box office competition wasn't exactly as tense twenty to thirty years ago (capitalist of course, but not exactly like today) meaning that it wasn't all just about gaining profit. If you didn't have really original ideas that would justify a sequel, you didn't necessarily make one, whereas today, every semi-successful film gets one. Also, whenever filmmakers do a sequel to a successful movie - and usually, they end up making a dozen until really everybody's had enough - they often ruin every chance of it becoming a classic (... except for a few examples like Rocky, that really illustrate a long process of some sort).

Why did they make him ex-step-brother. Is it ever explain how much does the "marriage" lasted? Because Mel loves the kid. Josh considers him his dad. Then this very strict sir pushes his "adoptive son" to his underage biológical daughter. In the Calvin Klein dress scene, Mel basically match-make them by sending Josh to the party and smiles about it. Been based on Emma, the relationship in the book is also awkward but a lot less disturbing. In the first place, Emma is 21. Mr. Knigthley (Josh) is at least 10 years older, and, knows her at least since she is 12. Most important, he is the brother-in-law of Emma's older sister. He visits Emma's dad because they live nearby and they built a friendship. Emma and Mr. Knigthley had a different family and home. I guess they didn't want to add the sister in Clueless, but Josh could have been his step-cousin or something less creepy. He's already like 4 years older. But it's Paul Rudd so I get why she'll fell for him regardless of the legal relationship. Who wouldn't? Perhaps the director really wanted to use the "you divorce wives, not kids" line. It's lovely.

Personal I think it would have been a better idea for them to be next door neighbors and that the reason he was always a Cher's house is because his mom was always away. Also I'm pretty sure I'm the actual books Knightley is like 16 years older and even if it is only 10, he knew her since she was 12 and he was 21, and would have grown up like an uncle to her, so I don't see how that isn't weirder then this. The only issue I had was the age but I just always pictures she was a senior in high school, but then again movies like this where just ok back then because the age of consent wasn't really thought of, not an excuse.
