I have a great "UM ACKSHUALLY" fact: people tend to misuse the term "negative reinforcement". In psychology, "positive" refers to providing a stimulus, and "negative" refers to removing a stimulus. "Reinforcement" refers to encouraging a desired behavior and "punishment" refers to discouraging an undesired behavior. So "negative reinforcement" would actually be removing a negative stimulus to reward a desired behavior. Shoving your dog's face in poo would be "positive punishment".

Which means that if the reward is avoiding negative reinforcement, like Trott jokes, then there's actually positive punishment happening somewhere (since reinforcement from the lack of or removal or something is negative reinforcement). In modern training, animals are trained almost exclusively with positive reinforcement, and sometimes negative punishment (taking away something good), although if you look at the humane hierarchy, you can see a bunch of different options to use before that, too, like antecedent arrangement, alternate positive reinforcement, and simple environment changes.
