Just a note to add. If you replace the bleed screw with a Speed Bleeder it will make the chore much quicker and easier. They work the same as they do on brake calipers using a check ball to keep air from entering the system. All you have to do is crack open the Speed Bleeder and pump the lever until all of the old fluid is out (if changing your fluid) or until all the air is out of the system. You don't have to keep loosening and tightening the bleed screw each time you pump the lever. :^)

A lot of makers including BMW used to design their bikes with users and service in mind; forget which bike but there was a model that was designed 'field serviceable' these days engineers seem to assume everyone will just take their bikes to the shop - unless you are riding 10+ year old bikes -I've owned an R1150R, an R1200 and a 1250GS - its rather obvious BMW cares less and less how difficult it is to service their bikes. This is a shame; one way that people fell in love with motorcycles was fixing them over a weekend with friends. Somebody in marketing should be told this!

Love your video's, very detailed with the close-ups so thank you. I can now change my clutch fluid and coolant with more confidence. 👍 Would love to see a video on a fork oil change, removing the headlight, and removing the airbox housing. Seen a couple on the latter but it was lacking in some detail. I ask as I need to replace my front shock, which requires some major disasembly, namely removing the tank and airbox. I also need to get the headlight out to replace the little fan inside (having an intermitent high beam fault that comes on after varying amounts of time depending on temp - hence why I think it's the internal fan). Thanks again.

@@zooskifilms It's 2018 model like R1200 GS. 18k. It did just come out of nowhere. Seems to get worse but that could be me being aware of it. Happens under hard acceleration. Feels like it's slipping, the revs run away with the bike and don't match the engine speed. Really hope it's not the clutch, this bike is in good order, I don't go off road or even in the rain. Typical GS adventure rider. I heard someone adjusting a grub screw behind the lever? I dunno

@booshallmighty - Understood. One additional question: are you adding anything to the oil (like moly)? You don't want to add anything to these models where the engine and clutch share the same oil. Otherwise the next easiest step would be to try adjusting the clutch play at the handlebar. There are a couple of set screws for the adjustment, one is the locking screw and the other adjusts the play. I will add this to my list of videos, but not sure when I'll be able to get to it. Let us know what you find out. Best!

@@zooskifilms Hi, it's due an oil change. I drained some clutch oil from the reservoir (nothing). The bike is booked into BMW main stealers on the 18th of this month to check it. If it is the clutch I will change the clutch myself. Looks very straightforward, only seen one English speaking video on this were a guy puts in an uprated clutch. I will just go OEM. This would be a great video for you, one which I wished you had on your channel. I will have a look at adjusting the clutch. If it does turn out to be the clutch plates slipping, I will be shocked. Firstly thanks for a great instructional video, it was all very clear and helpful. I'm looking at my 2019 GS with 44,000 miles on it, thinking I bet it will need the same treatment soon. But with all the hassle you described removing and re installing the starter I'm thinking access to the clutch slave cylinder bleed valve might be possible from the underside, having first removed the exhaust system. (Exhaust removal looks easier than starter motor). Any thoughts? (Before I attempt this option)
@zooskifilms
@zooskifilms Жыл бұрын
@David Main - Thanks for watching and for your question. I don't think you can reach that bleeder valve on the clutch slave unless you take the starter motor out. That's because that valve sits on top of the slave unit, I just don't see how you could get a wrench in there with the starter motor sitting there. That being said I am curious if it could be done. Let me know if you are able to do it and how your experience goes, I would be ready to try it myself if possible. Thanks again!

Hi! Good video! I was also wondering if this can fix my problem for my 2017gsa. It happens when i am on highway speeds like 70mph, the gear shift indicator starts to flicker then my engine starts to jerk, i lose control of throttle then when i downshift it goes away up until I downshift to 3rd gear. I tried connecting it to a gs911 but there is no error codes and bmw service cant figure it out as well
@zooskifilms

@benjaminbirrey5542 - When you say flicker, do you mean the gear number fades out to a blank screen? It sounds more like a gearbox issue than a clutch issue, but I would still check everything in the circuit.Also, when you it starts to jerk, does it feel like the clutch is slipping or that it's going into another gear? By the way, are you in 6th gear when this happens?

I think i will have to buy the whole drum with clutch plates and springs anew but now the bike wont go into gears ( I know, it does not have the clutch drum on now ) but the thing is, the clutch lever feels stuck. I'm somewhat ignorant mechanically so forgive my question if it seems naive...but if the clutch is operating smoothly, does the clutch require bleeding? The brake bleed is a necessary scheduled service item; I am skeptical that any fluid whether it be motor oil ,brake fluid, coolant and dare I add clutch fluid, has a indefinite lifespan without deteriorating, so could you enlighten me as to how often the clutch fluid should be changed? Thanks in advance.
@zooskifilms
@zooskifilms Жыл бұрын
@Mr Din - Yes, great question. As BMW does not have the clutch fluid maintenance included the maintenance schedule (nor the coolant), one could only surmise it's forever, unless you need to change any of the parts in the clutch line circuit. Or if you have the issue with getting into first gear from N. But I totally agree with you, I don't buy that these fluids last forever. One could argue the clutch fluid is not exposed to high temperatures like the coolant is. And the volume of clutch fluid is much smaller compared to the coolant, so changing the coolant on a schedule makes more sense, and leve the clutch fluid alone unless you have some related issue. That being said, I plan on changing the clutch fluid every 5 years (using time instead of km or miles). Unless of course I have some issue that requires removing it to change something else (like the clutch master or slave unit). If you read about clutch fluid vs brake fluid they seem to be similar in many ways, but BMW's blue clutch fluid is not as corrosive (on paint for example) as brake fluid. Otherwise they are both used hydraulically, with brake fluid is exposed to a lot more stress and high temperature. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture which gives it that spongy brake feel over time (thus needs to be replaced).If clutch fluid is similar, then that's another reason to change the clutch fluid, but you will know it's time when the clutch pull feels spongy. Hope this helps, sorry if I was long-winded. Cheers!

@@zooskifilms Thanks for your detailed synopsis. Bleeding every five years would seem like a sensible and responsible service solution and I would adopt the same approach if it wasn't such a "difficult" to access part. The next part of my comment besides highlighting my mechanical ignorance probably qualifies me to perform brake bleeds at a "legitimate BM service centre", ok cynicism aside...Would syphoning out the majority of the clutch fluid from the reservoir say often ie. once a year then topping it up with fresh clutch fluid serve to replace or refresh the fluid (obviously not as well as a full bleed) but over the five years ie five reservoir refills help in any way? I did preface this by acknowledging my mechanical ignorance.
@zooskifilms
@zooskifilms Жыл бұрын
@@mrdin5332 - Who doesn't love a cynic? Much better than a skeptic! I don't think it would make a difference with just siphoning out the fluid in the reservoir. I would probably just keep the lid closed and prevent any moisture from getting in there and not worry about it unless you need to go in there for other clutch related issues. That clutch fluid is not heating up the way brake fluid is, especially at the caliper. Of all the fluids I would skip changing would be the clutch. Cheers!

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with the fluid changes. Although you are not competely exchanging the fluids, you have first hand experience of this alternate method and it has worked well for you over the years. This is great information for the community, as I am sure many owners are in a similar situation as you and they should be aware of all options and they can decide which is best for them. The one consideration I would note is servicing during the warranty period. I don't know what BMW's position would be if there was a part failure and they wanted proof of the fluid service was made per their recommendations. By the way, I assume you perform the complete change for the engine oil and filter? Thank you again for sharing! (Original comment translated by Google Translate) I'm going to tell you what I've been doing with my hydraulic clutches since I bought my first motorcycle with a hydraulic clutch in 1984. I've never intervened in the hydraulic systems of my motorcycles to bleed all the fluid and replace it with new fluid, I think it's laborious, complicated and time-consuming. What I do is periodically, every six months, I just open the hydraulic fluid reservoir and empty it with a syringe and then replace it with new fluid. I also do this with other fluids in my motorcycles, brakes and radiator coolant. I've been doing it this way since 1984 and it's always worked very well. I know that I spend more money having to buy more fluids because it is noticeable that the discarded fluid that I remove from these systems every six months is still in very good condition, but it is faster, it is more practical, it is safe and it works very well. . I also know that it is an unusual and controversial procedure, but I am sure that this way I will be able to avoid the many problems that deeper interventions with tools and bleeding can cause and I will continue doing it this way. Attention, I'm not recommending this procedure, I'm just saying what I do and have always done on my bikes and that it has always worked very well.

@beemrdon52 - Yes, similar to the brake fluid line. BMW doesn't show the clutch fluid as a service unless you change one of the components in the circuit.

@beemrdon52 - Yeah, I get it when people want to do "something". It doesn't help when BMW puts the clutch bleed screw behind the starter motor. That's the point of me making these videos, we can do this!

Why the hell did they put it there 😵 Im in the process of buying a 2016 r1200gs so im doing my research on home maintenance. This is just a ridiculous design(coming from a yamaha xt1200). At least the valve job is easy on the boxer😊

@zooskifilms Жыл бұрын
@SAB-iq1kp - Yes, agreed. I could accept this placement if the damn starter motor wasn't so hard to remove. I would definitely recommend moving the exhaust bracket out of the way, it's another step but will save your sanity. Be sure to have something underneath the exhaust holding it up if you go that route. Cheers!

I feel that there is a chance to make a lot of money by simply placing a swear jar beside the person removing the starter. Ask me how I know.
@zooskifilms
@zooskifilms Жыл бұрын
@gretchensghost - Haha, no need to ask, I know exactly why. I have a jar filled to the brim that was sitting next to me when I was removing that starter. I think the trick is to move that exhaust bracket out of the way. I should have tried that when I was working on this. Just need something to support the exhaust piping. Anyway, sounds like you survived. You made it!

Oh boy those commenters weren’t kidding about the heartless engineers , but I guess it pales in comparison to the poor souls that have to lift the cabs off of the F-150’s for minor services.

@dvdh4937 - LOL, yes, but my video would have been much shorter! Thanks for the comment, I normally have to roll the bike when my gear disappears from the display. That happened a few times when I come to a stop in a high gear and need to shift back down to 1. Cheers!

Why would BMW/KTM use this hard (impossible) to find v10 hydraulic fluid? Absolutely no benefit to either the bike or rider. Ridiculous
