Wow this is a brilliant strategy! My father passed away about half a year ago. I have been struggling to go through all his possessions. I don’t need any of it; it’s taking up half my garage. I just get so overwhelmed and weepy when I go into the garage and am surrounded by his stuff. I was away for the weekend, and my teenage daughter brought a single box of photographs inside for me to look at when I returned. There were probably 500 or so photos. I was able to go through and pick out the good ones, around 20, and add them to my photo album. Then I discarded the rest, mostly photos of animals or landscapes. I didn’t know why it was easier to do just that one box until I watched this video. I think I am going to continue to just bring up one box at a time instead of sitting in the garage. Thank you!

I LOVE that you experienced firsthand the disconnection from the emotional attachments that a solitary box provides. Thanks for sharing part of your journey with us. I'm sending you a big virtual hug and hope you will keep us posted as you process the memories that are stored in your garage. 🤗🤗🤗

I related to the opening comment about grandma’s possessions etc, I’ve been clearing my mum’s home (of 50 years), now that she’s living in a care home. I tried hard not to bring any of her possessions to my home for sorting, but found it emotionally difficult to do it at her home. So I put those things in a few boxes and brought them to my small home. That changed my attitude. The boxes were in my way and seeing the items away from mum’s home situation and inside a box broke the emotional link. Some Items are now with mum in her room and some have been donated. I just have 4 boxes of photos to deal with now……..

Go Jan! This is what I'm talking about. Separating the items from the emotional attachments surrounding them. I applaud your efforts in finding strategies that work and for being willing to keep at it until you reach the end. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing your personal story.

I don't think of it as "getting rid" of things. That sounds cold and insensitive. I think of it as "letting things go" to where they can bring usefulness and/or pleasure to other people. Keeping things you don't need is actually selfish in that context.

I hope so. It's a really easy way to start over without ripping everything out and committing to a life overhaul - which is what will happen eventually, but it will not be overwhelming and exhausting. It will be intentional and with purpose, in manageable bite, size chunks.

Oh wow! Thanks for this! I have gravitated to boxing up my clutter to get it out of the way. Then weeks later I have found it “easier” to get rid of stuff, but sometimes that stuff gets put into another pile. But your video is giving me focus on how to actually deal with it. I was sitting here watching KZbin, unable to find the motivation to do anything today…but now I feel motivated! I love the “rules” idea! Now to get to work…!

I think this is a very helpful idea, Angela. I have a serious problem with clutter, but actually I think the clutter corner/box concept is even better for my sister. Her husband passed away five years ago, and his closet is still full of his things. I don't think all of them have equal sentimental/emotional value, but I believe the idea of being surrounded by all of my brother-in-law's clothing and belongings, makes everything connected to one another and impossible/daunting to part from. Perhaps removing a small, discrete set of items and just working on them separately might help distinguish between what is too dear not to keep, and what can be given away. Thank you so much for your channel in general, and this concept specifically.

Perhaps sorting thru his things by categories would get the ball rolling and make it easier to separate the keepers from the non-keepers ... like gathering all his non-emotional items like socks together to purge, then all the pants, shirts if she can handle it .. shirts & jackets seem to be the hardest to purge, so many emotional memories of each, so many hugs in them, the lingering scent of the person still in them.

I’m telling the clutter corner on Knox, I didn’t check my lid on my reusable mug. It has a center that you can use to close off doesn’t get coldI didn’t realize that the center comes out for cleaning Like that gal who collects knives from every place he visits, I collected hotel keys. So now I have all these beautiful hotel keys (from places all over. I just can’t get rid of that. Young, and her collection of mugs make it quite overwhelming in the near future. She may not make that picture collage now, but

I am always thinking of maintenance ideas, i do not have the space for a corner or basket etc but I will share with you how I do it. every month i write down what i have brought in, and at the last weekend i go over that and make sure there is nothing from that to get rid of, boxes etc and if it is a swap make sure the old one is gone and nothing is left over that way there is no clutter.If I buy a [pair of shoes I then go through all the shoes and so on.It keeps it all turned over if you know what I mean, so a handbag in and then go through all them, At the end of every month it is then back to were it was at the start and whatever I have brought in that is gone through for a mini declutter,

But Angela, a question? I do believe yours is a terrific idea of taking the box of stuff away from the source to the clutter corner but ... are we going the the bookshelf or the closet and piling stuff into the box to take it to the clutter corner, work on this box, and then go back and fill the box again and keep doing it this way? Thank you Angela
@judysbakeryandtestkitchen16542 жыл бұрын
My question exactly
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bonnie, you're getting ahead of me. LOL. If you have book on a shelf and stuff in a closet that is put away - leave that for now. We're talking about lose items in the beginning without a home. Yes, those you put in the box and those we will deal with because they aren't dealt with already. Don't "undo" anything just to put it in a box. (Not yet anyway.)

Hi Angela, thanks for the Keeper app. I was in hospital (very high blood pressure) and forgot password for pharmacy. I needed to let hubby know when to pick up medicine. Is it free? I’m kind of confused if there is a trial and it goes away
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi Judy, no, it is not free www.keepersecurity.com/pricing/personal-and-family.html but it is worth every penny. You remember one password and it unlocks the vault. In the vault you can electronically store all of the passwords to all of your websites, bank accounts, credit cards, the pharmacy. You can take pictures of your medicine and add your doctors information in the Keeper vault. In the event that you need to unlock the vault, you can use facial recognition or touch screen, or password - in any event, once inside the vault you can search by any field or any word and it will find your records. Keep all your data safe and easy to find in one place. It's a life saver for me. #notsponsored

My whole house is a huge problem. I'm sentimental and unfortunately I had to clean out my parents house and my in-laws house within 9 months of each other. EACH HOUSE contained a lifetime (50 years) of memories and "stuff". I did keep SOME items but now they have cluttered up my house of 34 years. I'm overwhelmed. But my first question is -- what do you do with holiday decorations? Of course everyone likes to decorate for the seasons (not just Christmas, per se), so of course, I'm not going to get rid of decorations only to buy them again. Plus, I entertain with large get togethers and I have multiple serving items: crock pots, buffet items, serving plates, utensils, etc. All that must be stored somewhere. Help!

Is a clutter corner table something that I should have set up in my home at all times or is it okay to set up the table when I'm ready to declutter
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
Yes to both. If you have a lot of clutter, you may want to go through a box a day. If you have limited time, take the table down between times, do you don't clutter stuff on top of it. I like the way you are thinking. :-)

I don’t have boxes of stuff Am I supposed to put the stuff in a box 1st?
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
The boxes make it easier but no, you can put a stack of mail or a pile of clothes on the table if it's easier. What is on the table are the things we'll be dealing with and only what is on the table, or in the box. We just want to get it out of it's normal element.
