This was a good review. CMA is very efficient and easier to get compared to the CPA. There are too many requirements for CPA and the exams are a nightmare for many folks. The worst part is, you can’t even take the CPA exam until you have sufficient accounting credits and need a masters to be fully licensed (once you passed all 4 exams within the 18 month window). That could cost another 25-100k, depending on the school. Most people who get the CPA never fully use it and end up working in corporation anyway. So for most people, CMA is more efficient and practical. Faster (6 months to a year) and cheaper to get, only two exams that are narrowly focused on management accounting. Also you don’t need an accounting degree, just bachelor in any field and you can sign up right away. Another thing, CMA is recognized globally (you can even work in Dubai, and they respect it there).

Hi. Thank you for your question. CMA educational requirements can be fulfilled in two ways: 1. Earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university 2. Have a professional certification Also, CMA does not require you to have a bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting. But your degree must come from a regionally accredited or Distancing Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) accredited university or college. You can check if your institution is accredited here: univ.cc/world.php If you cannot locate your college or university on the accredited listing, contact IMA at ima@imanet.org. Hi Nathan, I'm still conflicted with what to go for. I'm leaning CMA, because currently I'm a VP of FP&A with 18 years of experience and an MBA. But it seems like more companies especially in CA is asking for a CPA so its a tough decision. What do you think?
@Cmacoach
@Cmacoach 5 ай бұрын
Hi. Given your role as VP of FP&A with 18 years of experience and an MBA, the CMA certification aligns well with your background, focusing on financial planning, analysis, and strategic decision-making. However, if you're noticing a trend in your industry or region (like CA) where a CPA is preferred, it's worth considering the CPA as well, especially if it opens up more opportunities for you. Both certifications have their unique strengths. The CMA may enhance your existing skills in FP&A, while the CPA could broaden your appeal to companies looking for that specific credential. You could also get both credentials over the course of your career. They're not mutually exclusive. I wrote an article on my blog where I talk about all the CMA careers you will be able to explore. @Cmacoach
@Cmacoach 8 ай бұрын
Hi Krista. Congratulations on passing all four sections of your CPA exam! Regarding the CMA credential, it's not necessarily overkill, but it depends on your career goals and interests. The CPA and CMA certifications have some overlap, especially in the areas of accounting and finance, but they also have distinct focuses. If your career goals involve management accounting, cost management, or working in corporate finance, the CMA can be a valuable addition to your credentials. It's particularly beneficial if you're interested in roles like VP of Finance, Controller, or CFO. I wrote an article on my blog about both certifications. Hi. Choosing between CMA US and CMA India depends on your career goals and where you plan to work. If you're looking for global opportunities, particularly in multinational companies, CMA US is widely recognized and might offer broader prospects for higher salaries. However, if your focus is on working within India and aligning with local practices, CMA India could be more relevant. Both certifications have their merits, so consider where you see yourself in the future. I have an awesome resource that’ll give you a lot more information about career and salary potential as a CMA. Check it out here: cmaexamacademy.com/certified-management-accountant-salary-in-the-usa/ref/nathan/ If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out again.

Hi. Both CMA and CPA certifications are highly valued in the finance and accounting world. However, demand can vary based on region and career focus. The CPA is typically more sought-after in auditing and public accounting roles, while the CMA is more prevalent in management accounting and corporate finance roles. I'd suggest researching the job market in your area of interest to determine which certification has higher demand.
