I knew I HAD to share this backyard orchard tour with you, once I set foot our friend's orchard and gardens. We were visiting some friends on a road trip through Northern California, and it was inspiring to see what things they have done with their backyard orchard. Tim worked for many years as a Senior Diagnostic Plant Pathologist for the State of CA, and it was so much fun to talk shop in his backyard orchard. I hope you enjoy this backyard orchard tour, and come away as inspired as I was.

Just found this video (through an endscreen link, btw), and it was SO FUN to watch! I live about an hour and a half north of Sacramento and started slowly planting fruit trees about three years ago. I have 60+ now and absolutely love growing a wide variety of fruits and some nuts as well. I'm always on the lookout for something new! It was great to walk through this orchard with you and recognize some of my favorites -- Dapple Dandy Pluots, for one. I love the idea for the rolled shadecloth over the raspberries - definitely going to implement that this coming season. (Maybe for my tomatoes, too!) I'm currently thinking about what trees I'll be adding in January - a couple of Crabapples, for sure - but based on your recommendation (!), I've decided to plant a couple of Apriums as well. 😊 Thanks so much for sharing this "field trip' to your friend's place. I really enjoyed it!

Thanks for watching, Kim! It was a real treat to see how someone else is doing this, and seeing how trees I own do in another setting is neat. Planning for a following season is always exciting, but a little tough once you start running out of space, lol.

Your friend has got a very nice set-up and has obviously done a ton of great work. Lot's of fun to see what others are doing. Thanks for bringing this peek of Tim's orchard to us. I'm in the Bay Area and we have a ton of ornamental pear as street trees. The things harbor fireblight and so I've given up trying to grow apples. I stick mostly to apricots, peaches, plums, and pluots.

It is, isn't it! Aside from not being able to plant subtropicals as easily, it seems ideal for so many home garden options! Thanks for the support :)

What an amazing orchard. I live in Facto and I kept looking for clues as to what area this orchard is in. Clay soil is the norm here. Some places have hard pan and can be very difficult to grow trees.

Hey Jane, this home orchard is in Elk Grove, CA. The soil here seemed to be better draining than tough mostly clay soil, thankfully. The best option for clay soils is to plant above grade and mound with better draining soil.

I'm growing dwarf multi grafted fruit trees in my backyard, I was wondering what min distance would you recommend to plant each tree from one another, I am thinking Cherries, Pears, Apples, I already have a plout, plum tree in the ground. But they are about 8 ft to 10 ft away from each other.

Hey Mario, it's really about the tradeoffs of more trees vs. less fruit. You can plant them much closer than 8-10 feet. Check out this vide where I show my higher density planting style. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXa6i5adqZl8e9U
