Hello, I'm hoping you can help me, I dug up some passion fruit Vines from a very rocky area, dry I would say, they fruited all summer. I dug them up brought them home put them in some dirt and put them up on like a trellis, one seemed to look pretty good, for a couple of days, and the other one kind of withered /wilted right away, now the first one seems to be withering is it likely I might have too much water on them? do you know if I can root them in water? thank you in advance for any assistance you might offer!

It is called passion fruit because the Spanish Missionaries in South America used the flower to explain the Passion of Jesus to the natives there. The flower has parts which represent the three nails, five wounds, The Crown of thorns, the 10 loyal Apostles ( Judas betrayed Jesus and Peter denied him) and the tendrils represent the whips used in the scourging. Purple is also the colour associated with the Passion.

Mix the pulp with water and sugar (or simple syrup ) like you’d make lemonade and serve it cold or with ice. Stain the seeds if you like. Delicious! Also very good for hypertension. Lowers BP over a few months if you drink it daily. Worked for me and some friends

I got 2 tiny purple possums from rareseeds in April. One was doa. The other is green but slow growing. So slow it seems to be stunted. My mulberry and raspberries are thriving but the passion fruit is still tiny. Gets full sun for most of the day. I'm in 8b Central TX and it is hot hot hot. I'm going to test soil. Not sure what else to do. I wonder if it's getting too much sun?

There are any number of things it can be! USDA zone 8b shouldn't be too scorchy (we're in 9b). Give it a little time. My new and tiny everbearing mulberry wasn't doing ANYTHING, and just in the last 3 weeks has quintupled in size!

Also if you live in an area with rats or squirrels, you can place an organza jewelry bag around the fruit and tie it to the vine so when it separates from the vine the bag holds it onto the vine and keeps the critters from getting them. I did this for about 250 fruits this year! I actually had my neighbor come over and bagged the fruit as they were coming out of the flower while I was on vacation. I know it seems like a lot of work but I was so determined to not have the rats and squirrels take over my vine.

I tried that last year on my pistachios when I found a squirrel eating them all and then something ate threw the bags 😩 I think it was a Skunk or raccoon. The squirrel also cleaned out a few of my new peach trees that were covered with fruit. I managed to get a netting over my last one tree and we got some fruit off it atleast.

I have three passion fruit vines here in central Florida that I planted just over a year ago and like you we are getting tons of fruit continuously. My fruit doesn't develop that pretty purple color very well like yours but it tastes great. Mine do get somewhat purple but quickly go to brown. Perhaps the skin gets hit with fungus covering the purple but doesn't effect the inside. I have a Fredrick, purple possum and red rover. I can't tell a difference in the fruit between any of them. Enjoy your passion fruit.

@@remar-6 I'm not an expert on passion vines but I believe some are just ornamental or require a different variety to cross pollinate. I have a ruby glow passion vine I planted last fall but I got it for it's ornamental quality although it will set fruit if it has a pollinator. My purple passion vine are 100-200ft away so I don't know if cross pollination will take place. In time we will see.

I have 3 passiflora edulis in my garden in Norway. They are from a fruit I bought 2,5 year ago. I got a lot of flowers and fruits now. How many days takes it at your place from flower to eatable fruit? In my garden it took about 3 weeks for flowers to be a fruit a little bit bigger than an egg. I wonder how many days it takes for the green fruit to be dark red so I can eat it?

Hi Lynn, thanks for watching and subbing! I use a variable drip emitter that puts out probably 20 gallons +/-, once a week, and twice a week in the hotter months. Fertilizer is just my standard 3-12-12, or osmocote which has a higher N (maybe 15?). I truly haven't had to baby this plant, which I'm grateful for. If you're watering, aim for a good long soak less frequently than short frequent soaks. And be sure to MULCH!

This is super weird. Crunchy seeds? It must be completely different than anything I saw in Brazil, because the ones we ate there had seeds that are 1/4" discs. Also, you want to avoid crushing the seeds in any way because they make you sleepy, so chewing them is a terrible idea. I've never heard of anyone "eating" a passionfruit. They're like sacs of juice. Just juice. Kind of like a pomegranate, with the individual pods around each seed, but with passionfruit, there's no flesh in the pods, only juice. Brazilians scoop the pods into a blender and zip it a few times to break all the little sacs, then pour it into a pitcher. There are black flecks floating on top, which are broken bits of seed. If you don't want a nap after lunch (their main meal) it's best to not drink the black flecks. They also make it into mousse (amazing) and ice cream.

Where do you live? Whats your daily sun hours? Whats the foot traffic like in the alley? How do you fertilize? Acidity of soil? Any trimming needed? What usda zones?

SoCal, Sun hours depend on the season and in what part of the orchard, low foot traffic in alley, watch my fertilizer vids, acidity neutral to slightly alkaline, pruning none needed but neighbors trimmed vine going over the wall, USDA 9b.

My passion fruit us close to 8 months and it’s pretty big almost covered my entire fence. It just started to blossom it’s beautiful flower and I noticed that a lot of them are drying out and dying but not giving me the fruit .?? I’ve noticed snails 🐌 and ants on it what do you recommend
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that! Your vine is still really young, so be patient with it.It may be an issue with not enough pollinators, not enough nutrients, not enough water, too much water; it's hard to tell. I wouldnt' worry about too much about the snails and the ants (though the snails are no good)

I want a fast growing hardy edible vine for a privacy fence. How do I know which variety to buy? I'm in Texas zone 8b 9a. It's hot year round with high humidity. We had a big freeze last year. I read there's a 3 and a 5 leaf Maypop. I also want one with the lilac/purple flowers. Do all the varieties fruit taste the same? Which is the sweetest?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Not very familiar with maypops, but it looks like they're hardy down to zone 6. Not sure if the top part of vines only die off if there is a freeze, or if they do that every year. Like with most fruit they vary in flavor and sweetness depending on the cultivar.

Fernando, you may be picking them too early. The Best way to know, for sure, that they are ripe, is to wait for them to fall to the ground. But don't LEAVE them on the ground, they will quickly rot, or get eaten by pests.

9b phoenix here 👋🏼. I. Have a west facing wall I need to cover for privacy. Will that be too much sun for this vine? Also, will it creep over and down the other side of the wall? The wall borders a wash and I don’t want rattlesnakes & mice using this as a gateway into our yard. Thanks!
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 3 жыл бұрын
We haven't seen it suffer from too much sun on our southe-facing fence. It WILL creep to the other side, but can be pruned. Mice will use it, but I'd be surprised to see snake climbing it.
