I could say Planetside 2 (not Planetside 1), is quite similar to Command & Conquer: Renegade in some aspects. Although C&C: Renegade didn't have 3 factions and a huge map, but it does share some things like having terminals for accessing certain tech, vehicles and infantry. Eventho some say it's more of a RTS/FPS Hybrid like Natural Selection, but it's way different than that, in C&C: Renegade you couldn't build bases like normal RTS/FPS hybrid. Just my thoughts on it, because Renegade is imo a simple to get into game like Planetside 2, compared to Natural Selection 2. it has some interesting ideas, that to this day not a lot of games especially RTS/FPS hybrid adapted the idea. :)

There is one old and forgotten universe that could be easily made into an MMOFPS - Starsiege. It's the game universe that later on gave us the Tribes series. Especially take a look at Tribes 2, which I believe was heavy inspiration for the original PlanetSide. How the bases were made, multicrew vehicles like tanks and bombers. So we can actually go back to the roots of it all. We have multiple factions, aliens, mechs, tanks, aircrafts, everything that could be made into the full scale war equal to the PlanetSide.

I have said before it's rather bizzare and unfortunate some game studios have never seemed to try replicating the Planetside MMOF/TPS formula. Like the concept of putting 1-2k players on a map and fighting each other in massive engagements somewhat creating a realistic warfare scenario. One game that has seemed to sort of copy the concept is the US Civil War game War of Rights, not sure you heard of or played that Cyrious, but the idea of say 200vs200 like Planetside was known for is indeed something that needs a reboot. Like it's so crazy that back in the glory days of Planetside 2 other major game studios didn't look at this game and be all "Hmm you know what this might be a good concept to follow." I mean sure Battlefield kind of gives similar vibes but still doesn't compete in terms of number of players, and like you said the idea of reviving old games like Chivalry following a Planetside-style format of fighting over various locations on an open map, maybe sieging small villages, to forts, to massive castles. Being able to use in place of tanks and AFVs stuff like catapults or trebuchets, ballistas, horses and carriages, war elephants etc. Planetside 2 could have been a new era in the shooter genre and yet almost nobody has bothered to try following the format, we can only hope that Planetside 2 eventually gets a new lease of life in the coming months.

Crazy that Halo wasn't mentioned, but I do take Cyrious as more of a strictly PC gamer. The Halo universe is nearly a 1-1 copy of Planetside. You've got basically the same 3 factions The UNSC (Terran Republic) = A militaristic and imperial government (with facist tendencies), that after several centuries of conflict united all planets and nations in the sol system under a single democratic government (on paper). After that, humanity began to colonize other solar systems, where true democracy only really existed on Earth, and other colonies where exploited for resources. Your Brittish Empire allegory faction. The Insurection (New Conglomerate) = Said exploited labour of Earth's colonies and rag-tag group of militias. Forced to pay heavy taxes without any (meaningful) representaton. Trying to break free from the iron grip of the Earth based government through open rebellion (and occasional terrorism). Your Murica allegory faction. The Covenant (Vanu Sovereignty) = A religous cult that worships an ancient civilization of god-like aliens and also worship the technology they left behind. Believe that their gods used technology to ascend into beings of pure energy, and want to follow in their footsteps. Their faction uses the color purple for everything, with sleek curves and strange designs. The weapons they use are all plasma and battery based, and the vehicles have levitation technology instead of wheels. They will exterminate anyone who desecrates their holy relics or stands in their way of achieving godhood. So you see... Everything I just described is equally true for both Halo and Planetside. They already have the same factions, similar weapons, vehicles and story themes. If Microsoft management had at least on braincell, they would make a Halo MMOFPS like Planetside. I can garantuee you that if done right, it would grow bigger than World of Warcraft. But instead, Halo is now a dead franshice just like Star Wars, after years of pumping out half-assed trash.

I think when the average GPU or CPU gets higher, than gaming might slowly expand into this genre more, just by natural default. Grinding is part of the game. I played knowing full well there are vets lurking to ruin my day. But I soon learned and ruined some days myself! We have given way too much away to the newbs trying to entice them to stick around. I think PS2 tried to ease the grind by releasing too much fluff that didn’t do anything for the game while ignoring all the bugs and glitches that made it frustrating to play for people that would have become the next diehards. I firmly believe there was a sweet spot that this game had once upon a time, sometime before construction and from that point on the devs spent more time and money alienating the player base. Hiring Wrel was the final nail in that cynical, go fuck yourselves, you salty players, coffin. You can argue he “saved the game” but looking around, all I can say is bullshit. Extended its life? Nah… We’d still be right here today. He was too controversial from the word go, and as many fan boys he has, he has a lot more haters. His additions to the game were 99% bullshit and his attitude towards the player base was unhelpful and unhealthy. Where do we go from here? Who knows. The biggest question is, how do we source talent who would be interested in trying to get this off the ground? I don't think we should sit around wishing for licensing deals.

Even Battlefield, when 2042 tried 128 players, the players hated it and it went back to 64 players. Even te sequel looks to be 64.

The EA Battlefront games, (i don’t know why people call them remakes they’re clearly not) weren’t received that poorly and commercially they are 2 of the best selling Star Wars games ever made.

@@rexthewolf3149 The hell are you talking about, Battlefront 2015 was rife with performance issues and lacking a meaningful core game loop, while Battlefront 2017 was the source of the meme "pride and accomplishment" in defense of the MTX nonsense they forced in

@@MechShark yes your right. But that an oversimplification of the long term. Especially in the case of 2 that still has a devoted player base to this day.

Warhammer and Age of Sigmar would be cool. LoTR is too black and white, wouldn't work as MMOs focused on PvP needs 3 factions at least or FFA mode

not all mmofps need to be pvpvp could also be part environment or a.i hordes or conditions like a wild west era could have heat/water and food concerns. resource concern implementation doesnt need to be survival but logistical something that could be implemented into ps2 easily iirc there was briefly something like that around when there was 4 resource types that would also slowly regenerate to guarantee no stagnation but it was abandoned because it resulted in snowballing and saw no further thought, it also dosent need to be the classic fps it can have something like vats from fallout as an assist for the fps disadvantaged not sure how balancing would work but there is ideas to play with on the whole mmofps idea that rarely see anything outside of the trend that was set long ago
@Brandon340983 ай бұрын
to build on my thoughts a little, ps2 started early into the trend then gathered a thick layer of dust then came back to life to late to regain momentum without some serious effort, we didnt see any serious effort until wrel took over but even then wrel and the team he had wasnt enough to break out of the set trend as well as the issue of being a "known" game and people not wanting to redownload such a large game to see what could be negligible changes or additions

Vats would be a step too far for me. But I get the gist of what your saying and I kind of agree. Planetside definitely could try to lean more into the rpg side of things since it's already so far off the beaten path for an fps game. I Just think it would be better served leaning into more gameplay options or playstyles being viable. Which is sort of where I think you're going too with adding resources to the game. It's just so much that you have test and implement and test and modify. It's all just such a nerve wracking process.

Planetside just has to many problems at its roots. PS2 has primarily survived due to a dedicated community and the uniqueness of its concept. But that community has slowly bled away. Even if PS3 were to release right now: to survive in the modern gaming landscape it would need to be near unrecognizeable. "Massive battles" aren't as much a selling point anymore. And PS2 doesn't even do them the best anymore (Nobody cares if there's another fight going on several hexes over if it doesn't affect the current one. It doesn't matter that its one map without loading zones since it barely affects gameplay). - battlebit (which was released by a smaller studio) has the massive multiplayer "gameplay" down pretty well. - Battlefield (especially battlefield 1) has got the "vibe" of being in such a game down as well - And foxhole has got the logistics audience locked down. What planetside 2 has left is: - unique flying (which feels extremely unintuitive, has problems with flyer alliances, and is generally disliked by the community due to its pisspoor balance). - Unique mechanics with its class abilities (most notably the invisible sniper which is universally hated, and the jetpack). - Combined arms warfare (battlefield + battlebit + foxhole all have this as well. And of them I think PS2 does it the worst. Vehicles can rarely even enter bases) - Maxes. Again, these are pretty controversial. - A dynamic battlefield. During those rare occasions where you have a good&fun fight: you really feel the eb and flow of the battlefield. - a relatively noob-friendly introduction. This used to be much worse but actually got significantly better over time. There's still some baffeling decisions made here though. - absolutely no matchmaking. This is both a strength and a weakness. But in the modern landscape where people are tired of matchmaking: I think its mostly a positive. - 3 factions. This one is still fully unique to planetside as far as I know. Its far from perfect (NS weapons shared amongst all factions, few unique vehicles and little mechanical difference between them). But its still there and a major appeal for new players. - The game has history *and* is still getting updates This is why I think PS3 won't ever happen. The game would be expensive to develop, success would be far from guaranteed (especially with the bleeding playerbase and the battle-royale being a big disaster). And so many of the things that made people originally interested also became flaws or were adapted by other "better" games. I still love PS2, but after trying to get people invested into it with me I was forced to admit its many, many, many flaws. Comment over. I did not expect it to be this long when I started writing. And I definitely lost track of where I was even going with this.

You're absolutely right, however I truly don't believe Battlebit or Battlefield Have anywhere near the combined arms gameplay of Planetside 2. What game allows you to have 24 MBT followed by an entire air force of 12 person transport vehicles and air assault vehicles Simultaneously? Now, does it play well? I cannot say i haven't really played enough Planetside recently. But even play on console rolling in a column of over a dozen tanks is just a spectacle on it's own. I Also think Planetside even to this day, with what little knowledge of the game I have, has the worse new player experience of any fps game, purely from a design standpoint(unlocks/skills). It is so bad that the community literally refers to noob stomping as farming. Which is hilarious.

If only CCP had taken the combined arms/FPS aspects of DUST514 and put it into their new game EVE vanguard then we would all have our new MMO game. Instead they don't want my money either, they just wanna make a dog shit extraction shooter. May PS2 rest in peace.

I, for one, do not give one flying fuck about Planetside as a franchise. I play Planetside 2 because it's literally the only large scale FPS left after Heroes & Generals died. Some of the H&G revival projects (Warbound, Beyond Heroes) might be worth keeping tabs on as they develop.
