They need to stop wasting dev time on things no one wants and focus on things that drove people away. Revert changes that take zero dev time to do. Merge severs which I’m almost sure would have taken less time than this whole fishing nonsense. Stop pretending this game is an MMO and realize that at its core it is a noob farming simulator.

As soon as this hits live, fishermen are going to receive a stark reminder as to why you don't stand still in Planetside. Like, if you think terminal campers won't start camping fishing holes too then I have a bridge to sell you. And that's just once the release curiosity has died down, I can already see whole blobs of first-time fishers getting swept off the board by Banshees and Airhammers. A fishing update at a point when a lot of the community are uncertain as to how they feel about Toadman (and that's putting it charitably) is... a choice. Like, obviously the people who make a fishing update aren't going to be the ones who act as GMs, but when the game is flagging in terms of population and the people left are beset by hackers, announcing a chunky fishing update that's _just_ a fishing update is not what I'd call a smart move. If this was bundled in with changes to the core gameplay that people were optimistic about, then yes, absolutely, but this is going to send a message about where Toadman's priorities lie, regardless of accuracy in that line of thinking. I'll also be at my most cynical for a moment and say that this game has enough content already, and its code is made of spaghetti. Updates _frequently_ break something else in-game that has literally nothing to do with the update's content. How many times did DBG/RPG make a patch that had literally nothing to do with ingame voice chat, and yet still somehow managed to break platoon/outfit voice comms? We must be in the double-digits by now. If they have people working on PS2 whose sole role is to create new content... then maybe those people shouldn't be working on PS2 right now. We don't _need_ more, and adding more anyway could absolutely break something actually important to the game. Adding new content also isn't going to fix the population problem, not without simultaneous fixes for the core gameplay loop and hacker deterrent. That much is obvious from looking at the latter half of Wrel's tenure. We got these big, flashy updates that caused a population spike and then the numbers fell off again pretty sharply because underneath that shiny new hat, it was still the same game that the returning players had left behind before, and the same reasons they left were still present. The update with the most player retention wasn't the Bastion or the Colossus or the whole new map, it was the big balance patch. Now, I think Arsenal ultimately made the game less-balanced but it's fairly obvious based on data that new and old PS2 players care way more about alterations to the existing FPS gunplay than they do about shiny new things that aren't related to the core mechanic of shooting bad guys in the face. It being mostly built around Oshur is... well, at this point it's just funny. The community has spoken on the matter of Oshur. We had it for a while, we tried it, and we do not like it. People would rather log out of the game than play Oshur. Is the map's effective removal from the game technically a reduction in content? Yeah. Was Oshur good content to begin with? No. Even if you like it from a game design perspective, a map that causes mass logouts is a _really_ bad thing to have in a game where the entire selling point is big battles. Especially when a map can be around for multiple hours. It's one thing to have a map everyone hates in an instanced arena shooter like COD, where it appearing will make people leave that room for about 10 minutes and then things go back to normal, it's a whole other thing to see Oshur rear its ugly head at the start of prime-time for your server and know full-well that you're not seeing another map before prime-time ends. Oshur had to go, and introducing new Oshur content and potentially putting Oshur back in regular rotation is not a good idea. Will adding fishing fix any of Oshur's problems? Will it make underwater combat good? Will it fix the base design of Interlinks and Tridents? Will it improve the lattice? Will it put actual bases on every hex? Will it make the armour gameplay more than firing shells from either side of a bridge? Will it make the alert easier to trigger? No? Then it won't fix Oshur. Oshur will _still_ be a bad continent that people can't get rid of once it opens, and it will still cause mass logouts. If I log on for some PS2 and see Oshur as the only map, with no alert running, I'm not going to be enticed to play anyway by _fishing._ I'm just going to log out again. As for the "It's something to do in low-pop hours," angle the solution to low-pop problems at this juncture isn't to give people a distraction that spreads them out even more. It's time to shunt Connery's last holdouts over to Emerald and take the server out behind the shed and kill it. We know new content doesn't fix population decline. The Bastion couldn't fix PS2's population for more than a month, fishing isn't going to be what does it either. Connery is a dead server walking and the sooner Toadman cut their losses and admit it, the better.

Well unpopular opinion, I had some really good sqads on oshur, amazing holds with the player made base hexes, huge cutoffs, submarine sundies etc. I'd even risk saying that oshur sqads are the second best to lead/play in just behind indar. Thing is tho I specialize in combined arms sqads, meaning me and my people are no strangers to constant swaps between air, armor and infantry often times even combining all at once (a single ground farmer mossie often times allowed us to hold up to 70% over poop as the enemy wasted time and manpower to deal with it) That being said I fully understand why people hate oshur, as the only reason why I like it and why my squads work there is my very specific way of leading and that I'm with a group of veteran players each one worth at least 1.5 players so micromanaging is not necessary as if lets say we make a underwater ambush with prowlers I know no one will fire before we are at positions, and then most of us will hit their shots, target fire all exposed enemies etc

@@Zipperbag That would be a terrible idea. For one thing, there are no dedicated fishing zones on Oshur. The whole map is the fishing zone. Amerish is the only one with dedicated fishing zones. Secondly, if you put safe-zones where you can't take damage in the middle of the combat zone, people _will_ abuse them for an advantage in combat.

The game is on its last legs, some (most) servers are downright unplayable due to low population, and even if there’s people online there’s a high chance there are hackers amongst them. And they added fishing. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Jokes aside: I do hope they are working to fix some of the spaghetti behind the scenes so that they can actually start working on the game proper. But I cannot see this being received well by the community

Yeah, that was a cool part of the Planetside 1 lore. No animals on the planet, not even bacteria or viruses, only plants. It was almost as if Auraxis was prepped to be perfect for humans. But most of that was pretty much retconned with PS2.

You might think so. That was the mystery. There were hints that the Vanu aliens might have terraformed the whole planet specifically for humans. In PS1, the portal from Earth to Auraxis stayed open for like 100 years. Once the portal collapsed the TR thought the whole thing might have been a trap to split mankind's forces in half. The VS instead thought Auraxis was a just a gift.

I really like the idea of using the map for extracting resources ! maybe more minigames like mining or such, could give new players a way to aid their team while learning. Also, if the winning faction has more acces to more lucritive minigames, they will naturally have fewer people on the front-line, which could have a fun impact. it would make some areas more valueable, and it would add an opportunity for logistics to be affected by how well a faction defends and USES actual space on the map.

8:46 why isn't simple numerical tweaks to balance weapons not something that feasible. They have time for this but no time to do a balance pass. One thing they could do that I can't see a problem with is buffing the maxwell (again) to have 0.75x ADS, like one of the other NSO Auraxium (BAR ARX feynman). Buff it's aiming COF to match the carnage AR . This way NSO medics have a viable AR and if they also have ASP carbine with the CBX75. Devs would also sell more NS11A black and gold camo. Players would have a great directive to work towards to and keep them engaged, something previous dev letter focused on. Or like you mention, fixing the OP spawn beacons Anvil meta that kills logistic part of the game. But no, they decide they have time for fishing update ... 🫤👎

Yes modelers, animators and other artists are not Game Masters and AntiCheat coders, they can still contribute. Fishing??? How about add a super long Training REQUIRED and forced on ALL new accounts, that way cheater has to spend 50 minutes completing tutorial each time he wants to get in PLUS whatever queue time he gets. If cheater gets banned 3 times a day it would take 3-5 hours of training and queue time per day.
