It was drummer Roger Taylor's girlfriend's idea to dress in drag. Bass guitar player John Deacon was the frumpy granny in the dark coat and hat, guitarist Brian May was wearing the curlers, pink satin and lace nighty and bunny slippers (possibly as the spinster or widow Auntie). The guys all had a blast dressing in drag, they thought it was hilarious. Infamously, the stuffed shirts at MTV didn't get the joke behind the cross-dressing part of the video and banned it. The ballet section actually featured Freddie with members of the royal ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan. Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable.

“The video spoofs the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, as proposed by Roger Taylor: ‘We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we'd have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that.’” According to Rolling Stone, the video for “I Want to Break Free” is a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street. It features members of the band in drag in a way which hearkens back to Bugs Bunny and the early days of drag comedy. Brits got the joke, however, others were incensed by the video. Loudersound says MTV banned the video in North America.

@@nursemarn - Canada has always had closer cultural ties to the UK and we got a lot of their TV shows. Our humor is much more similar, puns, word plays, ridiculous situations. Stuff like Monty Python (way before the US), Some Mother do 'ave 'em, Fawlty Towers (whose sign changed as Watery Fowls, Flowery Twats, Farty Towels, Fatty Owls, etc.), Keeping up Appearances. Classic stuff. As Brian May reportedly said, "Americans are Puritans in public but perverts in private".

Yeah, in the UK, we laughed our socks off at this video - whilst the US went round clutching their pearls. Freddie was all ready to shave his moustache off, but they convinced him to leave it on as it was funnier. We have a long tradition of drag in this country - see Pantomime Dames. That is also The Royal Ballet company you're seeing. Just think of it as art :-D

It's one of the 'moments of music history'. And definitely in the top 3 best live performances ever. When I chat with someone about music, one of the first things I wanna know is 'have you watched Queen at live aid?' and if the answer is a no, the conversation will continue if the other person watched it. Edit: a line from 'Epic Rap Battles of History - Sinatra vs Freddie Mercury' describes it pretty nice IMO: (Freddie) when I rock the UK, South America gets horny. His stage presence was one of a kind combined with a genius musicality, an outstanding voice and a flamboyant sense of style. He's the type of guy that legends dream of.

This came out during my short time living in Germany. It was on their TV music shows, no big deal. I liked the song. The video made me giggle. It was that first moment of thinking, "I don't think Freddie is just just dropping vague *hints* any more about who he really is. Sing it Freddie! Break Free!" When I got back to the states, I realized how 'filtered' our music was. It was way before the internet, and trying to keep up with music from across the ocean wasn't nearly as easy as it is today.

This is a quote from the interview itself, not my words. The story behind the drag always made me smile. These men are magic. I’d say try-sexual. Brian May was asked in an interview with Q magazine March 2011 whether each band member's character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities? He replied: "Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie's idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger's girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women."

Faith, of OffTapLife, just said, "Wait a minute! That's Freddie!" and enjoyed the whole scene. But this cross-dressing goes back for centuries. The tradition carries on in Pantomime. Monty Python team in the late-sixties would play housewives in their sketches, to hilarious effect, and that was only a very little while before 'I Want To Break Free' was filmed. In earlier centuries, women were not allowed on stage and female roles were played by the males. I have a family photo of a cricket team in my own village, one particular occasion there was a decision for the men to dress as women and vice-versa. The ballet sequence in this video was inspired by illustrations of the Art-Deco period and a particular French artist of the time, George Barbier. Freddie was a fan of his artwork. The dreary household setting seems to be based on a soap, other comments mention 'Coronation Street'. The set design, maybe it's the set itself, looks as if it's borrowed from a BBC situation comedy, of the same time as 'Break Free', called 'Sykes'. The whole set-up is very generic.

@@donnabannister8925 I was trying to remember the year of the family photo, then it hit me. It was 1935, the match was played in the field opposite our house at the time, in the UK county of Suffolk, forty years before the Glam Rock scene. In the background there is one of the - only - three cars that were owned in the village of approximately 150 people, this one by a local farmer. In the picture there is my grandmother - the only time she ever wore trousers - and her good friend Rosalind, who owned a small farm with cattle. Of around 30 people in that postcard-sized black and white photo, my mother could still name each of them to a local historian at age ninety. However, rock music was beyond her, though I did persuade her to watch a few bands, including Focus or the Stones. She, laughingly, said, "They get paid for that?" Thanks for the positive. Context/depth of understanding is needed.

Oh hello Mr. Video. When I saw this on your reaction video list, I was a bit concerned. Your quiet moments in the beginning were to make sure your smoke wasn’t tainted. Or, you didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! They should have warned you. UK was a lot more tolerant to drag on film than we will ever be. The other ladies are the rest of the band. I was ok with Freddie’s mini skirt but Brian’s curlers always sends me over the edge. Queen was never afraid of breaking barriers. Remember this was the 80’s, and this got people SHOOK. Love your reaction darlin! ❤️. You handled it! Proud of you!
