It was drummer Roger Taylor's girlfriend's idea to dress in drag. Bass guitar player John Deacon was the frumpy granny in the dark coat and hat, guitarist Brian May was wearing the curlers, pink satin and lace nighty and bunny slippers (possibly as the spinster or widow Auntie). The guys all had a blast dressing in drag, they thought it was hilarious. Infamously, the stuffed shirts at MTV didn't get the joke behind the cross-dressing part of the video and banned it. The ballet section actually featured Freddie with members of the royal ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan. Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable.

Yeah, in the UK, we laughed our socks off at this video - whilst the US went round clutching their pearls. Freddie was all ready to shave his moustache off, but they convinced him to leave it on as it was funnier. We have a long tradition of drag in this country - see Pantomime Dames. That is also The Royal Ballet company you're seeing. Just think of it as art :-D

“The video spoofs the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, as proposed by Roger Taylor: ‘We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we'd have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that.’” According to Rolling Stone, the video for “I Want to Break Free” is a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street. It features members of the band in drag in a way which hearkens back to Bugs Bunny and the early days of drag comedy. Brits got the joke, however, others were incensed by the video. Loudersound says MTV banned the video in North America.

@@nursemarn - Canada has always had closer cultural ties to the UK and we got a lot of their TV shows. Our humor is much more similar, puns, word plays, ridiculous situations. Oh hello Mr. Video. When I saw this on your reaction video list, I was a bit concerned. Your quiet moments in the beginning were to make sure your smoke wasn’t tainted. Or, you didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! They should have warned you. UK was a lot more tolerant to drag on film than we will ever be. The other ladies are the rest of the band. I was ok with Freddie’s mini skirt but Brian’s curlers always sends me over the edge. Queen was never afraid of breaking barriers. Remember this was the 80’s, and this got people SHOOK. When I chat with someone about music, one of the first things I wanna know is 'have you watched Queen at live aid?' and if the answer is a no, the conversation will continue if the other person watched it. Edit: a line from 'Epic Rap Battles of History - Sinatra vs Freddie Mercury' describes it pretty nice IMO: (Freddie) when I rock the UK, South America gets horny. His stage presence was one of a kind combined with a genius musicality, an outstanding voice and a flamboyant sense of style. He's the type of guy that legends dream of.

Brian May was asked in an interview with Q magazine March 2011 whether each band member's character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities? He replied: "Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie's idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger's girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women."

@lkamer14 жыл бұрын
Your reaction was hysterical. I loved it. This song was written by John Deacon and it was Roger and his girlfriends idea to dress in drag. Everyone assumes it was all Freddie's idea. The characters were based on a British soap called Coronation Street. John Deacon was the little old lady, Brian was in the curlers and Roger( Rogerina) was the pretty blonde and of course Freddie in the mustache. He thought it would be funny to leave it on. The dancers in the video were none other then the famous Royal Ballet. The story goes that someone approached Freddie to dance with the Royal Ballet for a Royal Ballet gala in 1979. They thought Freddie could actually dance because of how he sort of glided around the stage when he performed. However, Freddie was not a dancer, everything he did on stage was primal and organic, no choreography. Freddie was too spontaneous to be able to follow choreography. The Royal Ballet wanted him to sing Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy Little thing called Love while dancing around the stage with them. He even went and practiced with the Royal Ballet and they realized he was no real dancer so they more or less carried him around the stage ,above their heads and so forth. The gala was a smash, Can you just picture Freddie singing Bohemian Rhapsody while being held upside down by the Royal Ballet. Just put that image in your head LOL, he also was wearing a silver glittery tight body suit. So now back to this video. When they decided on making the video, Freddie asked some of his friends from the Royal Ballet to be in the video and they agreed to. So you see them carrying Freddie around and him rolling on the dancers and stuff. Freddie was very creative and their wasn't much he couldn't do or at least wouldn't try. He was Fearless on stage and quite shy off stage. He was completely different in his real life then his stage life. Freddie is probably the greatest Front Man of all time and the best voice as well. If you would please react to the song Get Down Make Love live from Montreal 1981, or Don't stop me now, the official video, or Fat bottomed Girls live at The Bowl 1982, White Queen from a Night At The Odeon-Hammersmith 1975. These are all great Queen songs and i would really enjoy your reactions to them.
