I remember when I first saw the Altoids Amp- man that thing is so fresh... it's minty.
@benfischer954010 жыл бұрын
Why would you think the iPod's internal D/A converter is bypassed using that dock connector..? The signal out is obviously analog (i.e. already converted), because it enters the amp using a 1/8 cable carrying left, right, and ground. It's definitely not putting bits and samples into an op amp. The CMOY doesn't even have a D/A converter in it. It's all analog
@WitheredAnge112 жыл бұрын
5:01 No, it doesn't bypass the internal DAC. The dock still outputs an analog signal...
@MrBlackBerserk10 жыл бұрын
If you use the dock connector you will get line out and that is still a Analog signal (5:00) , so u are not bypassing the internal D/A converter.However you are right that you will get better quality signal because the internal amplifier is bypassed. Great video though thanks.

Incredible thing is 10 years later apple sells a decent DAC for like 7usd and is the size of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Awesome.
@rdaffon2312 жыл бұрын
Yes!.back to audiophile geekdom! Solid, informative, helpful review. I'm waiting for a portable dac/amp combo review/recommendation sub $200. Something where it does not to be powered by USB to keep the dac functionality.
@vampire500312 жыл бұрын
If you mean android smartphones, then yes it should work with any device that has some sort of line out or 3.5mm out. If you want to bypass the internal amp and DAC of your phone/mp3 player then try to see if they're is some sort of line out other than the headphones jack on your phone/mp3 player.

I've always loved the look of the Cmoy, I'll probably pick one up one of these days. Thanks for the great video as always ^.^
@Tangylives12 жыл бұрын
The cMoy design does have more power(and can drive stronger impedence headphones) than the E11. Ignore my previous statement about the E11 being a amp and DAC, I was thinking about the E17. I would probably get the cMoy over a E11, but not an E17.

Well I would bypass the internal soundcard on your PC, well I like the ODAC by JDS Labs and Schiit Bifrost. Another good DAC is the HRT Music Streamer 2. Look those up, they are great. I like the Schiit one because it doesn't need battery's like ODAC and it is upgradable and has a 5 year warranty.

Would I notice any difference while using these with a pair of Shure SE215? They're monitors so im guessing not but I need some other opinions.
@Tangylives12 жыл бұрын
Depends on who you ask. If you're just starting your journey into good audio, probably not(sub $150 headphones). A DAC just ensures that the digital music file is converted as accurately as possible into an analogue signal for amping and your headphone/speakers. The better the DAC, the better the conversion.

What op amps where there and what did you like the most? I just got a cmoy amp from diyourfaceoff and I popped a jrc4558D that I unsoldered from an old amp. I liked the sound better than the BB 2134PA. Just curious what else I can use to tailor the sound. Thanks
@syn01011010 жыл бұрын
4556/4558 will of course sound better because they're specifically designed for headphone use. The expensive opamps these builders like to use are "trendy" but they are not intended for audio use... so they sound worse. Just use NJM4556AD and you're pretty much golden for basically any headphone ever. It's $0.73 from Mouser.

@voiceoftreason17609 жыл бұрын
I might not understand this, but why not just plug in the headphones into the ipod? isn't that loud enough? i was looking for some DIY electronics projects and found this.
@Pierrot1101949 жыл бұрын
Some headphones have a higher impedance which usually results in a lower efficiency. Impedance is the value of Ohms, which typically is 32 Ohms max for headphones used with MP3 players or smartphones. However, high end headphones have a much higher impedance and therefore require way more power than an MP3 player could provide. This is where a portable amp comes into play. You could obviously also use such an amp for your PC,TV or console.
@voiceoftreason17609 жыл бұрын
Peter Pepper mine are 38 ohm, so i don't need an amp right? also, it would seem as too much of a burden to carry a small amp around with your phone or mp3 player.
@Pierrot1101949 жыл бұрын
Enhanced Pyrotechnics The only right answer to that question is: try it. If you think your headphones are loud enough then no, you won't need an amp.

Why would you change your opamp when changing a signal source. That's non-sense. If anything you would just need to change the input impedance. "He's not a manufacturer that drums up these thinks to make a profit". The dude's selling beginner DIY level hobby pre-amps in altoids tins for $50 whereas his bill of materials is probably 20 bucks max. The circuit is put together on perf board for fuck sake.

Less than $15 of components, sells for $50 and he is not doing it for profit. Ok
@expandedidea10 жыл бұрын
That's not really true. Even if you are cutting corners, you still are buying 25 bucks of components. The parts in this thing are probably up to 30-40 as it looks fairly premium and it might have a BB cap but I'm not sure. Anyways, if anything, hes making 10 bucks per purchase.
@TheLukey2110 жыл бұрын
I guarantee you there is not $40 worth in that tin, more like 10 at most 15 at the max.

@syn01011010 жыл бұрын
Most of the "legit" cmoy builders on ebay overbuild them kind of a lot, so the parts cost is probably around $30 (maybe less if he buys in bulk). And this builder also never said it wasn't for profit, lol. You can build a perfectly fine cmoy (internals) for around $11 (less if you buy parts in bulk). There's really no reason to use these expensive opamps since they're not better than a 4556 (usually they are worse).
@taiefmiah8 жыл бұрын
+TheLukey21 there's a channel with a tutorial on how to build with $10 link for components. (not including delivery)
