If you're named in a will, you typically will be contacted once the will creator passes away. The process starts at death, and you may not be notified unless a probate is opened. Often, assets with beneficiary designations or transfer-on-death designations bypass the will, going directly to the beneficiaries. These designations take precedence over the will.
