As a 3d guy, I learned this about 2 decades ago (along with all the other foundation stuff like sketching, life drawing, lighting, film theory, etc). I must say, however, you have an EXCELLENT grasp of the concepts and your method of explaining it is even better than the 'pros' in the industry (3d) that were trying to teach it to us! :) .. Well done, sir! Subscribed and I think I'm going to just have to put these three Colour Theory vids on repeat as I practice my mini-painting skills (just getting back into it after about...huh...a 20 year hiatus...coincidence with my 3D schooling?...I think not! Pro Tip: DO NOT go to school for longer than 6 months! Just don't! Take a course or two, then practice that and incorporate into your own 'stuff/life'. After a year off...then maybe take another couple courses. But a full "3 year degree"? You're wasting your money 9/10 times).

It's amazing that I work in commercial printing and not until today did I consider that I should be using CMYK as my main reference for miniature painting instead of RGB and it makes heaps of sense. Art school and years of work in the field didn't put the pieces together like you did. Well explained and straightforward. Between this and your oil painting videos it's changing the game for me completely.

Marco, I've seen some Imperial Fists videos where they base coat the model pink. The value sketch goes on top of that, then they come in with the yellow. The pink and the yellow make nice orange shades, while the value sketch yields a nice pure yellow. I'm painting Salamanders so I'm trying to figure out what a good base coat would be to give me a similar effect as the pink does for the yellow. Is an orange base coat -> value sketch -> green the process that I should experiment with?

Hi, I have a question that requires a bit of an introduction. I am getting into airbrushing miniatures and am planing on using CMYK as my primary color source, but don't know what specific paint to use. to be more specific, I'd be starting from a zenithal lighting effect for the undercoat, take a picture and put it into an image editor, and add some color layers for the primary (non-detail) colors on the figure as transparent layers, to get what pure color paints I want to mix, Convert that RGB value to CMYK Opacity values, meaning 0-100 opacity of each, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black/key (all transparent), and then go dropwise for each color, 1 drop per percent opacity, plus the rest of the drops as medium to total 100. 20 drops is 1 ml, means 5ml per value, 4 values of CMYK means 20ml paint every time that should, I hope, be that exact color. mix each color I picked, then just use some sort of paint-on mask and do however many coats for each part to get them to the correct saturation. (and then do details with probably pre-mixed acrylics because otherwise that's a LOT of paint) So that leads to my real question. For that type of set up, what paint should I be working with exactly. the closest I have found (and not bought yet because of it's reputation) is createx, which allegedly, is terrible for miniatures painting. additionally all my experience getting art supplies in general, had been going to pat catans, and if I didn't know what something was there was someone there who knew and could help. Now pat catans is gone, and I neither have a source for supplies, nor anyone to really ask for advice and finding out things I didn't realize where important. all I have now is game stores that are like "oh, you need paint, citadel stuff is right there." and that's not particularly helpful at all, because good miniature painting is like a competition to them, and you don't help the competition.
@MarcoFrisoniNJM3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I love the scientific approach you are planning 😁 For what you have in mind I would suggest the high flow range by Golden acrylics (I recently made a video review about them), acrylic inks or even better a combination of the two; they are both high quality, artist grade paints, highly pigmented and saturated, slightly transparent and perfect to be used in the airbrush directly from the pots!

This 2nd edition can be much harder to find. He has a third book, which I think would be interesting to look through, it is generally a bit $$$ in good condition. @@MrNayiro It's a pleasure 😉😊! Oh yeah they are awesome for mini painting! They don't have a lot of covering power so it's better to use them for the advanced stages of painting, but for all the rest they are great paints

Great as always! I’ve been after the Kimera set for mixing my own paints an learn properly but whenever I have the cash they’re out of stock and when they restock I’m always out of cash (the sets last 24h-ish on their website!) Once I get myself a nice set of paints I’ll start mixing and experimenting.
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha I'm sorry for such a bad timing 😂!!! Obviously you can start doing these experiments with every kind of paint, Kimera are better and easier for this purpose, but you can mix everything with everything else!

MarcoFrisoniNJM trust me, when I try I create the muddiest ugliest muted colours ever 🙈 I blame it on the paints because they don’t get offended 😂

😂😂😂 Thanks! Yeah there's a lot of stuff in here! On the palette everything is much much simpler but I love the technical/scientific side and it's useful to solve difficult mixing situations like creating skin tones and their shades (something I want to explore in the next future 😉)
@PierSilver5 жыл бұрын
Ok hold up! Hold up! I planned on following the video guide of Painting Buddha here on YT to paint a nice Stormcast using non metal metallic technique. This would require me to buy a total of 7 colours (surprisingly not many, when compared to the average GW tutorial), almost all by Vallejo. Should I dismiss my plan, and instead proceed to create those colours mixing them myself, using a Kimera kit (or similar)?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah totally! Mixing your own tones is always a valid and more interesting option. Obviously it's easier to make and follow tutorials with a set of colours straight from the bottle but when you understood how and why they are used in that specific way, mixing is very easy and satisfying 😊

7:55 what is the difference between the real and the additive color wheel in this picture? they look the same only slightly rotated (magenta on top vs red on top)
@RoflWaffer5 жыл бұрын
You're correct that they are just rotated a bit. The key difference is what the primary colours are. For additive it's RGB subtractive it's CMY. Around 5:00 - 6:30 explains why this is. That is why CMY is more correct than RBY for paints/subtractive: CMY has the same wheel as additive colours, but behaves "opposite" in terms of mixing.

Csn beleave this set of 3 vids are mind breakers. Hey bro one question because I want ti practice what you say. For vallejo, ak, citadel what color it is cyan and magenta? Thanks and very very nice set of vids. Thanks for sharing!!!
@stingray45675 жыл бұрын
This was a genuine mind blower! Im no pro artist but I did art to A-level + have known full well for years that printers use cyan/magenta/yellow inks. But I was never taught about primaries & it never occurred to me. Great stuff! One question though - why would the Kimera set have magenta and yellow but not have cyan??
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million 😊😊😊 Super super super appreciated! Kimera set has a very good phtalo blue that's good approximation of a dark cyan but for this video I wanted to show the use of the classic triad 😊

Mind blown. This sort of helps me with the issue I am having. I am painting Tau with Vallejo Model color Blue Green with bright orange. I need a tertiary color for small details like the lights. I've tried yellow and green but it doesn't look right. By this model, i should go with Magenta?
@hl17964 жыл бұрын
Macro, does Crimson Lake consider a Magenta ? the only oil paint available locally i got is Alizarin Crimson and Crimson Lake, and they look quite similar... just different in price
@MarcoFrisoniNJM4 жыл бұрын
They are more in the red spectrum so they are probably not an optimal choice for a primary tone. If I really have to chose I prefer Alizarin crimson, great tone for everything related to human blood and vascularised areas!

Excellent video. Question: the list of cyan and magenta colors, are any of those Citadel Paints ? I ask because in my LGS they only sel Citadel Paints, so that's basically what I have at hand, and the names of them are not very descriptive... 'Ahriman Blue'... wthk? xD

PROTIP: f you have an empty bag of chips they have the cyan, magenta and yellow tones you need down by the barcode. take an empty bag in with you and try to compare what you need

Hi Marco! Which one of the Kimera paints would you say is closest to Cyan?
@philgee4864 жыл бұрын
Ok so 2 weeks ago blew £70 on acrylic inks to learn to mix and use, whilst totally avoiding the ones I needed to choose to be able to mix vibrant saturated colours.... I have a bunch of pretty colours that can be used straight from the bottle and basically 136 combinations to make muddy browns???? Why has no colour theory vid I've watched before even squeezed this understanding into my brain? Even I grasped it when I saw it play out on the palette.... You're doing great work at my house Marco

Grazie! ;)
