The union proposed staggering the strikes between cn and cpkc to keep the railroad moving at 50% but the companies refused and served lockout notice.

Those employees have been without contracts since last year. They still went to work... they werent asking anything outrageous. It's the COMPANY that LOCKED THE EMPLOYEES OUT, not a walk out. It's funny how many people are blaming the employees.

it can't come soon enough. THiS is on the companies, though. just lock them out so they get hungry. . We are about to find out how important the RR's really are. The R roads expenses drop way off when this happens, so they have that advantage

@@FERNANDOAUGUSTO-fv1ck It's actually more however, pay, relative to skill levels, expectations on workers, responsibility, safe work environment, which is another key issue, remove of appropriate rest breaks, +. They do handle $Billions per year in goods. Some of their lines are also used by and I'm assuming leased by, GO Transit so mass transit would also be affected. That just in Ontario. I'm sure there is other fallout elsewhere. it really is a gamut of things. Big companies being dicks for many reasons. Also, $150k for top level positions isn't a lot any more. Particularly, single provider for more than one, or a family. It's about 40 years and we are seeing another big shift, including economic, just as always. This comes with it.

if you were talking about a company like Walmart I would agree. A company like Walmart pays minimum wage. But the average CP rail conductor base salary is $85K a year. Nearly three times the average yearly salary. And they work about as hard as the company does. I am not saying they don't do work but they are not bust their a$$ off either.

How are you supposed to get a deal when the companies won't even sit at the negotiation table .I worked for CN for over 38 years only once in that time did we ever get a negotiated contract. The company would come in to the negotiation room lay what they deem the contract should be say take it or leave it to the union then they leave and never return to the table even when the gov't send the union and company to mediation CN just lays the same book on the table says take it or leave it agaIn and walks out again. Then the company will either lock out the employees or the employees go on strike and the company waits for the gov't to legislate us back to work and to binding arbitration with the same contract we already had with the blue book raises on benefits. The life of a railroader is not an easy one lots of long hrs gone 36 - 48 hrs every time you go to work on the mainline being on call 24/7365 including all holidays no days off no paid sick days getting called at all hrs of the day or night so you can never get into a proper sleep pattern . Most rail workers live in a state of mind that is not functional try getting only 6-7 hrs sleep every two days for years on end and see how sharp you are. I don't know about you all but I would prefer the guys and gals hauling stuff that could wipe out an entire city to be wide awake and alert not fighting to stay awake because they are so tired . This strike has nothing to do with wages it's all about the quality of life and safety f the employees and the public.

@pacman3556 in this economy yes! My husband and I have seen major drops in our income. We are going backwards after 30 years! We’ve received no raises whatsoever in at least five years. When we did get our last raise and it was retroactive the government took more than half away from us. We are barely getting by. We go to work and stay home . We are careful with our money. Day trip or a round of golf occasionally.

I wish I could find a document or a publication of some sort that actually shows what is on the table and what each side is actually proposing so I can decide who is really at fault here. It'd be just as easy to just say "The companies are being greedy!" as it would to say "These union guys are unreasonable and are asking for too much!" So far I can only find generalized statements from both sides that obviously are at odds with each other which does me no good to decide for myself who's right or wrong here.

Well here's a fact for you. The unions involved wanted to negotiate independently, so that any service disruption at say, CP, would not coincide with disruption at CN. CP and CN responded by locking out their workers at the same time, guaranteeing disruption. They did this to create a crisis, and hoped the federal government would enforce back to work legislation. This service disruption is entirely the fault of CP and CN, not workers.

Unless you work for either company, it really is none of your business. They arent a public employee, nor are they a essential service (according to the government) So as a private entity, their negotiations arent anybody but employees business.. Lastly, like said by Dave... it's the company that locked the employees out, trying to force a back to work legislation, even though the workers have been working without contract since last year. (CN was November). Who's right or wrong here. Hmm Well it seems like usual, the companies colluded to make it a national emergency by having both strike at the same time. So... the company?

It was CP & CN that caused this by locking out workers at the same time. The unions just wanted to meet them at the bargaining table, a right which is enshrined in law. CP and CN are just trying to do an end run around that, and they are the cause of disruption, not the unions.
