These units made regular appearances on the St. Lawrence & Atlantic RR in northern New England (my current employer of 22 years) back in the mid-late 90's. We had a power pool agreement with CN & had a lot of CN power of all types on the property daily back then. The SD40u's made appearances at least twice weekly, oftentimes more. I've been aboard many of them: 6004, 6009, 6011, 6012, 6015, 6017, 6021, 6024, 6027 & 6028 are the units I recall being aboard, in the cab, some of these on more than one occasion. Cabs are more spacious than most SD40's or SD40-2's, seats were comfortable, they had upgraded control stands (somewhat similar to that of a SD75I), the Q-Tron processor screen on the rear bulkhead of the cab, behind the engineer's seat, by the rear entry door. The newer rebuilds (6020-6028) had an elevated middle jumpseat for a third crewmember, for better visibility (was in the middle of the cab). 6000-6009 still had white & red class lights on the front, above the numberboards. I believe these were not retained on 6010 & later rebuilds. The bell on 6000-6009 was mounted on the top of the long hood, behind the dynamic brake blister on the fireman's side. On 6010 & later rebuilds, it was moved to the standard EMD location of beneath the frame under the cab, on the fireman's side. 6000 was done in 1992, 6001-6009 in 1993, 6010-6028 in 1995. The CN North America map is present on 6000-6019, then just the simple CN noodle on the 6020-6028, as these must have been done in late 1995, around the time CN became publicly traded on 17 Nov, 1995. CN dropped the NA map in its logo when they went public. These units were rebuilt at the Atellier Montreal Facilty (AMF) CN-owned shop in Pointe-St-Charles (Montreal), Quebec shop, just west of the Victoria Bridge.

6007 is still alive and kicking, her along with 6012 are robots in Edmonton. Really the only good robot units we have in here currently. 6007 is my favourite to operate, she’s super reliable to the yard crews (we bitch and complain whenever she’s given to another assignment)

+shnimmuc HD makes an enormous difference. Regular video 8 was only 360 by 240 pixels and it is amazing how modern video software can enhance the quality but even so it is no where near as good as HD at 1920 by 1080 pixels!!

Were they rebuilt with remote control, or was that added more recently?
