Something I love about his fight that I think a lot of people don't really notice is that Mei's attacks ramp up at two different points. At first she's just toying with Kiana to tire her out so that she can leave in peace, but Kiana escalates things when she pulls out the ole' void elbow which will worsen her condition, exactly what Mei is doing all of this to prevent. That's when she pulls out the lightning and starts hitting HARD in the hopes of putting her down for good so that she won't use the void powers. Then Kiana escalates it further by going full herrscher and Mei realizes she has to go all-out and finish this as soon as possible or all her efforts will have been for nothing. Whether right or wrong, her increasing violence serves to show how much she cares.

Mei actually escalated first; Kiana responded first by using her battlesuit, then escalated further when Mei started to more heavily lean into her HoT abilities. She also went for a disable, where Mei went straight for the takedown. Neither is in the right, but Kiana's more hesitant to fight Mei for real - she even only tries to trap Mei, never attack, when she goes full HoV. They're in a toxic phase of their relationship, and it's a good allegory for how fights between lovers usually go. :c

The sad thing I realized watching this is Kiana is only ever going for nonlethal attacks, arguably even non-aggressive tactics. I only just realized after a year of believing she went from the fencing into a choke on Mei, she never touches Mei’s neck. She grabbed her shoulders- like someone ready to shake a loved one to try and break their train of thought. She could have put Mei down at least three times- had she gone for Mei’s throat at that moment she could have possibly stunned or even rendered her unconscious, when she first used her Lances she could have pierced Mei’s limbs but instead with surgical precision in less than two seconds immobilized her without harming her, and when she was using her constructs she could have directly attacked like HoV did to Himeko to… devastating effect (remember Himeko was powered by a Herrscher core, and while using her powers Kiana feels no pain as we learned when Jackal was torturing her. Meaning the pain here was the pain of fighting Mei at all, purely mental and emotional damage). Mei escalated, Mei was the aggressor, and while I understand her love and pain was driving this and supercharged by the fusing of her Herrscher persona and her human persona not knowing who Raiden Mei was anymore; I can’t ignore that Kiana didn’t want to hurt Mei because of love. They ended up on opposite ends because of that love: Mei loved Kiana so dearly she would become cold as needed to not only find a way to save her beloved from what was killing her but herself. Kiana found that beyond her childish crush antics we are used to that even in face of immense suffering caused by Mei she could not raise a hand with intent to cause her beloved harm, never realizing that her nihilistic self-hatred and lack of self-worth had driven Mei to such an extreme when love and kindness and everything that normally worked between them had failed. I don’t believe it toxic at all in terms of a relationship- I think it is a commentary of how far Kiana had fallen into her own depression and self-loathing after Himeko’s death that she saw herself as expendable as long as she atoned for her sin. Mei was a loved one who had no hope but to try and intervene when Kiana stopped listening to reason, and when the truth of Kiana’s deceit (meant to spare Mei, Theresa, Bronya, and Fu Hua from worry and pain watching her die) and blunt acceptance of her terminal situation when Mei wasn’t around showed Mei that Kiana would die to protect even Mei’s feelings without ever knowing how much she was harming those same loved ones. Mei was desperate to save the one good thing she had left: the woman she loved who hated herself. I understand both sides to a degree, but because Kiana never spoke of her condition mentally, physically, emotionally with her beloved she only made it harder to receive help she needed.
