Being a CNA prior to becoming a Nurse helps you be a better manager of CNAs as a Nurse. All experience is going to contribute to being a better Nurse. Now there are many Nurses that are excellent and have never been a CNA.

I applied into a 5 weeks CNA program right after High School to get experience helping people in the medical field. I wanted a job beneficial job while in school majoring in molecular- biology to become a doctor. Fast forward 7 years later, I'm in my last year at UCSD school of medicine doing my rotations. I've worked as a CNA for 5 years and it was a life changer for me. I've learned so much throughout those years and have so much respect for CNAs.

I use to think of it exactly the same way...until i started the cna program. WHen i did my first clinical it changed me! Making me happier than i have ever been before. CNA's are the ones who give those that little bit of attention. This program has changed me and Im so glad that thought has been taken away from me.

Perhaps, but In my opinion a nurse assistant is sort of a companion. A nurse assistant has the intuition and sensitivity to be the eyes and ears of the licensed professionals. When a nurse assistant becomes a licensed professional, they should be better patient advocates.

CNAs seriously don't get enough credit! I've never actually been one, but in my nursing program we take over the CNA duties, as well as the RN duties when we're in clinical and the CNA duties are far more stressful and takes a lot more work! It really sucks when I see RNs in the hospital act like they can't help their CNA...like what?! Why even be in the profession if you're going to act like you're too good for something. I know they get busy, but there are some nurses who just act like they shouldn't have to help their CNA and it's ridiculous. Rant over lol

Having been a CNA and RN for many years now, I humbly disagree. The incredible liability and stress of appropriate care fall on the RN. When I was a CNA I actually told my friend, "I can't wait to be a nurse so I can sit on by butt and tell the CNA what to do". I became a nurse and learned the truth was so much different! Time will teach you all you need to know. CNAs are amazing and valuable and few people appreciate the CNA more than the nurse!

This is perfectly said. I am in school studying to become a CNA and I think about RNs doing that. Hopefully, they don't act like they're too good because from what I'm studying, the nurse is in charge of the CNAs and their job is on the line based on how we perform the delegated tasks. Love being a CNA but also so glad I'm working towards my RN. Mother of 5, police officer husband and no family for couple hundred miles each direction, but nothing can stop a determined momma! I have always thought that being a CNA was a great first step to being a Nurse, you learn the very foundation for why you want to be a nurse. Yes you hit it right on the nose Holley we do not get enough credit, sometimes I feel like the LPNs and RNs forget where they have came from in their education because they started from the same root as us. My residents give me more credit than some of the nurses which makes it so rewarding in the end. The nurses I do have a great relationship with give me advice and tips as I am going to school for my RN BSN. Girl you're doing you thing out here stay blessed!!!

That tell you something try to upgrade to become a LPN RN you can work you can do different things with but being in the nursing giving you one and you have that back ground dont let time and age catch up with you work out in good luck im 45 i wish i would do this at the age 20

I've always respected CNAs since I was a nurse and even more so now that I'm a CNA instructor. I have students who come in all doe-eyed, which means innocent and full of expectation and wanting to do right as CNAs and they get burnt by evil people in the health care system. That's why I call out these behaviours in my channel. Nurses need to value their aides!!!!

I work as a CNA and we have to do vitals. Like every shift, we do the vitals. Our nurses only do specific vitals if a patient needs it done before a med is passed. It's neat to hear that CNA duties vary from place to place. (: Great video. -An aspiring nursing student, Rachel

At the telemetry unit I used to work on as a PCT, our shift was as followed Walking rounds, vitals, glucose, ambulate patient's with bleeding precautions, hourly rounding, meal and fluid intake and output, Q2 vitals on MI and CVA patients, baths, second ambulating bleeding precaution patients, empty urinal hats, urinals, foleys, NEPHROSTOMY bags, JPs, Colostomy and ILEOSTOMY bags, EGKs, Daily weights, transport patients to scheduled Xray, etc call lights, prepare next shift to have an easier shift, chart, and take the same 6 or 7 patients to the bathroom every 5 minutes with lasix push for CHF and everything else that was asked of us by RN, patient's and their family, then maybe we could leave a half hour after our shift ended

I am a CNA and have been one for almost a year and I absolutely love it! It is the most rewarding job! I love the smiles on my residents faces and I love listening to their stories. I work at a long term care facility on the Alzheimer's unit and it is definitely hard but SO rewarding. I just love it!

I've been one for more then 25 years! Most of the time it is very rewarding. But it doesn't provide enough to raise a family. And most facilities wont consider your experience. But overall, it is a wonder experience. I'm always learning something new. And patients give you so information on life!

Preach! I sent this to my coworkers. It's different here in OR, though. When l certified in 2014, l had to take one computer pre-test, and then for the board exam, I had to take a 100 question exam, and then I had to do 5 skills demonstrations. To keep my license, l have to have 400 documented, paid hours of work under a nurse's supervision. We do the vitals in my facility, and some of the nurses are really cool about grabbing us to assist with wound care procedures (like holding a limb during a dressing change, or during a debridement procedure). CNA 1's start at $11 in my facility with 0 years of experience, and then the rate of pay goes up $1 per year of experience. It's always interesting to learn about the differences from state to state!

I am a CNA, I have been at my facility for almost a year. Certified for 7 months. I love my job. I am soon going back to school to be and EMT and eventually down the road go back for my RN to be a NICU nurse. I love everything your saying in this video. It frustrates me as well when people call us certified ass wipers. If they have never done the job they do not actually understand everything we do. I have held patients hands as they have taken their last breath, I have cleaned up patients that have passed away, I have hugged the family because their family member just passed away all while staying strong while being with the family. I wish i could say i make as much as you do. I put in anywhere from 120 to 130 hours in a pay period. I make only about 9.75 an hour. We don´t get enough credit for our job or get paid enough, Its not about the money for me but all the hard work we do i do feel like they should pay us more than they actually do. The only thing I do not like about my job is working short staffed all the time. I work in the memory care unit on 12 hours shifts 7p-7a and I am usually the only aide on the unit by myself taking care of almost 30 residents. I love this video though!

In California a night shift cna can earn up to $20 even more the hr and it's far less stressful then day shifts. $9 is absurd!

It would really be a great job if the facilities didn't overwhelm the staff. When I first started out in 1981 it was wonderful. I had nine patients on day shift, and only five or six were complete care, while the others just needed their bras hooked and little tasks like that. We did their hair, their nails, their make up. It isn't fun like that anymore.

I haven’t finish my GED, I drop high school four years ago and once I finish my GED I will get prepare and take the CPR test and training and go for CNA training 🥰❤️. Some people have tried to discourage me by saying it is super hard and underpaid, and while that might be true, I still want the experience and start from the bottom. I think being a CNA before RN is super important and should be encouraged. I'm about to apply to a CNA program to get my certificate, so I can start the road to becoming a nurse! I'll probably work as a CNA for a couple of months, at least, before applying to nursing school for several reasons... 1) To save money before my husband and I officially start school again, and 2) to gain a bit more "credit" when applying to nursing school (my past grades in college weren't the hottest.. didn't have a goal before) and finally, 3) because I want to build myself from the ground up. Thank you so much for this honest video. I have a Master's in Nursing Education & have been a nurse for over 40 years but started as a CNA! It was the best base for my training. I now am the Program Manager for the CNA Instruction of a college in Massachusetts and will be using the video during their orientation. We are also trying a new training session with the Nursing classes of combined labs so they will learn to collaborate in the work place and GET RID OF THE attitudes, learn to work as a TEAM! As a nurse I'd rather have 2 competent & compassionate CNA's that I can count on than 4-5 (which the state requires). Thanks again, this was very helpful to those thinking of becoming CNA's!

I'm so grateful for this video. I'm about to be in nursing school and about to finish my CNA course and have to felt it would be a great base to work off of and to have under your belt while in school. I did a huge career change going from a hairdresser to nursing. I started nursing 5 years ago and unfortunately never finished but now that my head is in the right place I never been so motivated to finish my dream job. This helped me so much... like you said people often criticize and think CNAS aren't worth the crap but there's so much more to it! This helped me put the negative thoughts behind me and ready to get out there!

I started as a candy striper... And worked my way up to hospice nurse. Honestly, the hardest I EVER worked was being a CNA for 12 years. I've been in nursing for 28 years and without CNAs... There would be no REAL one on one with patients. It's not your initials behind your name, it's your caring and passion to help others in your heart. Wow! I can relate to EVERYTHING you said!! It's like you spoke the very words I was thinking. I've been a CNA for over 4 years and I absolutely love it.. I'm finishing up nursing school and I cannot be any happier!! I have some horror stories from my first years as a CNA.. but with The most high and learning people I survived. For me it is a requirement in my state (NC) to become a nurse otherwise I would never have considered it. But I'm glad I did. It is a very rewarding career and the pay is good if you can find facilities that are willing to pay more for your skills. Some wanna offer $9 and I truly believe that's a bit low considering the long hours and selfless service we provide. It is a very challenging career and it's not for the weak. I loved your video Holley. I´ve been a CNA in São Paulo , Brazil for about 20 years and we also face this kind of stuff here and it´s really sad. However it´s really rewarding and important job. Knowing that our work is absolutely crucial in the rehabilitation process of the patients is something that motivates me every day , as well as seeing them smiling at me after finishing every bed shower or any other procedures . I was a PCT on a telemetry floor for 8 years before I became a RN. My personal experience as a PCT was mixed. I was privileged to have worked with and learned so much from the night shift RNs. Yet, I've worked with some RNs that were blatantly narrcissistic with their self created entitlement and belief that they didn't go to Nursing School to help "the help" and we were there to first serve them, then care patients. But when I became an RN, I made sure I was always helping the PCTs, because I wanted them to know I wasn't just the RN they reported to, but a member of the team. And that's the best way to do it. But being an RN didn't last long. My company cut over a hundred jobs and I was one of them. So I joined the Chicago Laborers Union and I now make more in a week then I did in two weeks as an RN. I miss it, but the egos that come with it, makes me stay far away.

You are a beautiful young lady and I loved your video. So encouraging. I worked at an assistant living facility and did some similar things as you described. I never thought I could do the "brief changing" of the residents, but it wasn't so bad. Since I have a love for people, I actually loved the idea of being able to help the residents/patients. They were so dear. Today I have degree for Medical Accounting and now am considering getting a certificate or learning for a CNA. Your dear mother...9 kids, I'm not far from her. I decided to take the LPN/LVN route to get a better, stronger foundation of what it takes it to be a good nurse before going further. I kept having doubts about my decision of not going straight into the RN route, but I feel like this was what was best for me!

Hi Holley! Thx for this video. I’m currently a CMA but I’m transitioning into an RN soon. I’m my state, we have to complete the CNA1 before we even apply to nursing. In my personal opinion, the students who become a cna1 first make the best nurses. Keep up the great work! 👍🏾
