@@Thytrppr - here is a short version. After USA pulled out of Vietnam (South East Asia) the old historical baggage between Cambodia (the Khmer Empire) and Vietnam flared up again. The Khmer wanted to reclaim the southern part of Vietnam ( or An Lac pre-colonial time whose written language was based on Chinese Hans). Thus skirmishes were broke out along the border between the countries in the south. On one swift move Vietnam captured Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia. Neighboring countries were in shock and they were absolutely don’t want Vietnamese regime spreading in the region. They blamed China for the dominos effect. Well, China requested Vietnam to pull out. Vietnam turned around gave China a finger. Then the war started. You figure out the results.

@@TitoTimTravels FACTS ABOUT SPANISH PHILIPPINES Spanish Manila and Philippines was seen in the 19th century as a model of colonial governance that effectively put the interests of the original inhabitants of the islands before those of the colonial power even they were bankrupted several times in maintaining the Philippines. As John Crawfurd put it in its History of the Indian Archipelago, in all of Asia the "Philippines alone did improve in civilization, wealth, and populousness under the colonial rule" of a foreign power. John Bowring, Governor General of British Hong Kong from 1856 to 1860, wrote after his trip to Manila: "Credit is certainly due to Spain for having bettered the condition of a people who, though comparatively highly civilized, yet being continually distracted by petty wars, had sunk into a disordered and uncultivated state. The inhabitants of these beautiful Islands upon the whole, may well be considered to have lived as comfortably during the last hundred years, protected from all external enemies and governed by mild laws vis-a-vis those from any other tropical country under native or European sway, owing in some measure, to the frequently discussed peculiar (Spanish) circumstances which protect the interests of the natives." In The Inhabitants of the Philippines, Frederick Henry Sawyer wrote: "Until an inept bureaucracy was substituted for the old paternal rule, and the revenue quadrupled by increased taxation, the Filipinos were as happy a community as could be found in any colony. The population greatly multiplied; they lived in competence, if not in affluence; cultivation was extended, and the exports steadily increased. [...] Let us be just; what British, French, or Dutch colony, populated by natives can compare with the Philippines as they were until what 1895?." Asia's oldest and continue modern learning institution was University of Santo Tomas (Dominican, OP), est. 1611. Universidad De San Ignacio (Jesuit, now defunct when Pope suspended Jesuits for brief period of time) est. 1601. University of San Carlos, est. 1595. The Augustinians opened a parochial school in Cebu in 1565. The Franciscans, took to the task of improving literacy in 1577, aside from the teaching of new industrial and agricultural techniques. The Jesuits followed in 1581, as well as the Dominicans in 1587, setting up a school around archipelago. The church and the school cooperated to ensure that Christian villages had schools for students to attend. Schools for boys and for girls were then opened. Colegios were opened for boys, ostensibly the equivalent to present day senior high schools. The Universidad de San Ignacio, founded in Manila by the Jesuits in 1589 was the first colegio. Eventually, it was incorporated into the University of Santo Tomas, College of Medicine and Pharmacology following the suppression of the Jesuits. Girls had two types of schools - the beaterio, a school meant to prepare them for the convent, and another, meant to prepare them for secular womanhood. The Spaniards are the ones who taught the Filipinos to worship the True God (Biblical God). *Jesus was Asian* Christianity made the Filipinos to abandon pagan ways, polygamy, war freak attitude, infanticide and learn temperance, monogamy, resilience and more refined characteristics based from the teachings of Catholic Christianity. Spaniards defeated and ends the warring Hindus, Buddhist, Animist and Islamic chiefdoms all over archipelago and united it into a single governing entity as Spanish East Indies under Spanish Crown. The Spaniards are the ones who taught the Filipinos to eat sardines, made and eat pandesal bread during breakfast, drink coffee and chocolate, to wear modest dress because ancient Filipinos were almost half naked and to watch stage plays. Spanish regime had brought slavery and exploited Philippine resources, but in fairness it brought and taught more civilized way of life to the Filipino people that British, French and Dutch never implemented in their colonies. How successful Spanish are!?. By late 1900s, Philippines is the only majority Christian nation in Asia, 95% Catholics that practiced Hispanic culture, speaking Castillian Spanish as lingua franca long before Ethnic Tagalog dialect and English implemented in schools after Americans banned Spanish in 1901. #HistoryofFilipinas Asians by Blood, Spanish in Culture, Catholic Christianity by Religion.

They we're shot by water cannons while fishing. This is where the distaste of SEA and Filipinos towards Chinese started. It wasn't that strong at first but then it gradually mounted because of the news after news of intruding and bullying. Recently a Chinese vessel was spotted sailing near the Catanduanes Province. Take note that it is inside our water territory but was only detected later cause we don't have enough technology to guard our territory from China.

7:54 - the 2016 ruling was by Permanent Court of Arbitration, an arbitral tribunal with no binding power and requires parties to voluntarily participate which China didn’t. Most people confused it with International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea which is an UN agency with binding power. In the 2015 case of “Mauritius v. United Kingdom”, the US and UK ignored the ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration as well because participation is voluntary and decision non-binding.

Americans just use India for their interest
@matthiane94533 жыл бұрын
ASEAN has four choices mainly: 1. Pick China - This one would be controversial especially for the countries that have the SCS dispute. If China could accept that it doesn’t claim the entire SCS, then ASEAN just may be able to cooperate with the Chinese more than the Americans. However the question is could that really happen? Especially with the US still patrolling the SCS and of course China not wanting to back down from a country that sees it as a rival. Assuming though if ASEAN and China works something out and China promises that it won’t do anything else to our countries then this would be a huge blow to the US and really beneficial to ASEAN. Why? Because with the current geopolitical events, it is likely that China will overtake the US (mostly owing to its large population which is almost 4x the US and it’s rising industries), of course countries that want to develop their economies will side with the nation that could help them in the long run, and so that is what China is right now. 2. Pick US - This one is the current choice however how would this help ASEAN? Well, the US’s sphere of influence has long been in the region’s countries especially the 2 main nations with disputing claims over the SCS (the Philippines and Vietnam). However the thing is America hasn’t been doing so well especially after what Trump did with that country, so it is going to be a matter of time if the US wants to keep itself together, right now some are saying the US is experiencing a global decline of influence and is starting to become more isolationist. This will only depend on what the Biden administration and the next administration (if they get someone like Trump again) are going to do. If the US doesn’t do anything and becomes isolationist, then ASEAN would obviously lean more to China, however if the US changes right now then we’ll have to see how it would “protect” ASEAN. 3. Pick Both - This one is a very deadly choice because whoever becomes the president, prime minister or leader in general of each ASEAN country has to show to their respective country that they may get cozy with one superpower but they’re still with the other one, which is a difficult task. Saying “oh no, China is building islands in the SCS and they are attacking boats, we need the US!” and then turning your back and saying “We should let more Chinese businesses come in, the US wouldn’t mind” will obviously leave a portion of the population confuse on which side they truly are on (However an exception that I see this is with Singapore, the probably only real neutral nation in ASEAN). However, if done properly then perhaps there may be a chance that your country grows while you get to play and manipulate the 2 major powers. Say if the Philippines had a president that would use China to its advantage by accepting more investments and projects from them to advance its economy while it can turn around and if the SCS dispute comes up, it can turn to the US for defense. That’s just one scenario on how it could play out. 4. Pick Neither - This one is personally my current pick. Why don’t these 2 powers leave us alone? Many people ask, well in the real world people are greedy and want competition therefore we can’t really tell the US and China “Stop”, that’s not how geopolitics works. However, one alternative solution to this, is to not pick a side between these powers, instead what ASEAN could do is unify (not literally more figuratively) under some idea where we don’t have to be under these 2. ASEAN right now has a population of over 600 Million (2x the US, I believe almost half of China), and at least half, around 350 Million, of those are in 2 countries (Indonesia, and the Philippines), plus most of the populations of each country are still young which gives a benefit. Making an actual union is better to these countries. Even though, we’re also still developing and our cultures can be very similar and very different, (Vietnam culturally is closer to East Asia than SEA, the Philippines isn’t super close with its Austronesian neighbors like Malaysia and Indonesia, etc.) I think increasing our relationship with one another will definitely help us in the long term. Imagine if Filipinos and Indonesians would regularly travel to one another and share more cultural exchange or Vietnamese and Burmese interacting with each other more or Cambodians with Timorese, who knows maybe even after a period of time, a independent ASEAN identity would develop so that we wouldn’t be under China and the US’s hands anymore but that’s all wishful thinking unless the current and future governments do start thinking something similar to that. If you actually read through that, then I guess thanks for listening to my Ted Talk. -Sincerely, a South East Asian who hopefully could visit each ASEAN country and who hopefully won’t see a war break out in the region because of stupid power hungry nations.

Which side to choose? Just recall the proportion of power between both superpower when our country was/is growing well. That is the best spot/position to maintain. It should never be 50:50. 50:50 will result in another cold war or more aggressive confrontation. The shift towards that position is definitely not going to be peaceful regardless of which administration, unless they wish to see their own political power recede. A hegemonic structure is still the best for the world and region. It is not as simple as staying neutral. Sometimes you have to force that equilibrium behind the scenes. Doing nothing, which may result in an unwanted proportion, will force you to take a side which you don't want. Especially if you are small, you don't have the luxury of choice at the end. This is why so many countries in Asia still want to hold on to certain superpower bases. Not because they love that superpower, but because of its counterbalancing effect. So guys, time to put aside all your cultural hatred or thousand year old yellow tribal sentiments and start thinking from your own national interests.

US and China's story reads something like this - Tough times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create tough times. It's a cycle and US and China are at different points in that cycle. Everything that rises must fall at some point and rise again eventually. US just needs to know how to fall gracefully.

It's about maintaining US hegemony. Veteran US diplomat Chas Freeman says that despite talk of a New Cold War between the US and China, the US in reality is reacting aggressively to a rising Chinese power whose economic gains threaten US global supremacy. “We’ve become accustomed over the past 75 years to be the overlord in East Asia,” Freeman says. “Veteran diplomat: US confronts China to protect supremacy, not security”

Sometimes the decision to "chose sides" is not your decision. If China keeps making outrageous claims and enforcing these outrageous claims, then countries have no choice but to chose sides. Recently China passed a law allowing their "coast guard" (which operates thousands of miles away from their actual coast) to " forcibly remove foreign ships that illegally enter the country's waters, and to use weapons against them if they do not comply with certain orders".
