For a decade, Elon Musk has championed the idea that one day Tesla cars will drive themselves as robotaxis. On October 10, the company plans to reveal a “dedicated robotaxi” design at an invitation-only event in Los Angeles.
Despite years of bold predictions and missed deadlines, fans of the company are holding out hope that Musk will finally deliver. Regardless of what the company showcases at its robotaxi day, experts are skeptical of the company’s strategy, citing its Auotpilot and Full Self-Driving technology as a barometer for Tesla’s progress, or lack thereof.
While Tesla has been developing its autonomous vehicles, competitors like Google-owned Waymo and Chinese companies like Pony.ai and Baidu have already launched commercial robotaxi services.
With U.S. EV sales growth slowing, there’s a lot riding on Tesla’s potential pivot to autonomy. CNBC explores whether the company is ready for robotaxis and if Musk’s vision for driverless Teslas will become a reality anytime soon.
Correction:
2:41 The event date is mislabeled. The correct event is the Tesla Annual Shareholder Meeting, which occurred on June 13, 2024.

I have used Tesla FSD since 2018. It was scary in city driving but doing good in freeway driving. And it improved about 1 to 2 percent bettter with every update but still not good enough for me to drive in city street confidently until the last major update which they switch from commmand code to Artificial Inteligent technology. And this is a game changer, it drives really good in city street right now and i use it everyday confidently.

@chm2 Instead of spending all this time "thinking" why don't you take a ride in one through the cones to see for yourself how it reacts. That's exactly what people with FSD do everyday with new construction sites. They aren't hiding from them. Plenty of videos showing it navigating construction cones. There are people submitting videos of failures to help train the AI for weird scenarios it screwed up in. It learns from example.

Took delivery of a Model Y the end of July. Thought FSD was a gimmick. It’s not. As someone in their mid-60’s, I’m done with driving if the car can drive itself. I push the right roller wheel, tell the car where I want to go, pull down the right stalk and relax. The only problem are things where other drivers don’t do what they’re suppose to do. Like yesterday, an ole boy pulls on the interstate, I’m in the left lane to pass him but he forgot to turn off his blinker. The car doesn’t know what that car is doing. I completely understand the logic being on the spectrum myself the car thinks exactly like I do about things😏

LOVE the latest FSD that was installed last week over air. Use it 99% of the time. There are times when I turn it off and it hasn’t done anything wrong. I decide to pull in somewhere off the route and a screen pops up asking what happened. You can push the roller wheel and give an audible description but I don’t because it didn’t do anything wrong. Is that considered an “intervention”? I honestly don’t know but it shouldn’t.

I've said for years now that using only cameras is just dumb. I understand the motivation, it's cheaper, but cameras are still nowhere near the efficiency of human eyes, especially in low light conditiions. Even if you can ultimately do it, radar/lidar still provides more safety. Just because *humans* can only see with their eyes doesn't mean we have to limit self-driving vehicles in the same way.

I think that and a few other things have to be worked out like charging while doing robotaxi. The latest update with the “summon” is incredible, I tried it on Monday coming out of the movie theater. Tesla is gonna “summon” cars for people who want to participate in this business arrangement. Imagine some kid buying a Tesla and loaning it out while he’s at work to help make the monthly payment. October 10 will be an announcement of robotaxi starting at a future date, in my opinion and that’s fine.

Great technology, and obviously a huge market, but I think people tend to forget that robotaxis will be operating on the same streets as all other vehicles in our cities - and there aren't room for many more. Robotaxis will likely replace driven taxis, but Musk's apparent fantasy of robotaxis making a huge dent in urban transportation ignores the physical reality that there's no room for two or three or five times as many private vehicles driving (or parking) on our streets. The ludicrous scenario would be hundreds of empty robotaxis cruising already jammed city streets on their way to or from single-occupancy fare-paying rides. Cities, I think, will simply not allow it. The FSD application I'd be most excited about is city busses (a drastic reduction in operating costs and a corresponding opportunity for much more frequent service), and electrified, self-driving transport trucks. Given that city busses travel on single, limited routes, and at much lower speeds, that could potentially be much easier to achieve.

I think Elon said that with Robotaxis most people will opt to not own a vehicle and eliminate recurring charges such as registration, insurance, maintenance, charging fees and depreciation. He envisions people using a car as a service (CAAS) and just pay a monthly subscription fee to have the ability to call on a robotaxi at any time they need one via an app! It sounds good on paper, but real life is much harder!
@robadr13
@robadr13 2 сағат бұрын
@@stargazer3828 He's also been promoting the idea though that your car can be out 'driving around and making money' for you, implying that many more people will now be able to get around cities in private vehicles. There just isn't the road space in any true urban area for any increase in single-occupancy vehicle traffic. Suburbs ('last mile' trips) maybe, but not cities. The 'hyper-loop' fantasy (individual vehicles being transported up and down in huge platform elevators from city streets to underground tunnels) is even more bizarre. Elon is clearly a genius in many respects, but I think he's seriously off base in some of his urban transportation ideas.

If its a vehicle of some sort, it'll be little more than a prototype just like every other vehicle "release" has been. If it's a software update, then what exactly do you think has changed that hasn't been released in Beta form that will be giant leap? Musk gets hated on, but lets face it - ALL car manufacturers claim what they want with no repercussions. Every single manufacturer claimed that they'd have Level 5 by 2020 and here we are in late 2024 and nowhere close. They claim that all of their new vehicles would be electric and no more ICE but there's not a single manufacturer that is even close to that. You claim what you want and make excuses when it doesn't even close to happening.

All these pieces about being “late”…. They are working on SELF DRIVING CARS people! I think the real angst should be directed to companies who have made the same basic cars for 50 years. At least Tesla is moving innovation forward.

So what if perfection is late for FSD (and by extension "robotaxi"), it's still the best product out there for chauffeuring you around, i use it to tag out to let it drive in traffic. Hate the personality of the man, but the technology (even late) is great.

This is hardly a pivot. This has been the plan all along. I can say that FSD is already better than the average human driver. The market will not be satisfied until FSD is far better than even the best driver. This is only a matter of time because the system keeps learning.

Dealerships add a markup to the customer, which is unneeded. Also, with Telsa's requiring much less maintenance, I imagine dealerships are harder to generate revenue without the repair revenue. Besides, Tesla's desire for vertical integration conflicts with the idea of farming out sales/service to another third party. The only benefit to dealerships is legal, getting past state laws blocking direct sales, which should exist (at least in the case of Tesla and other companies who don't have dealership model in the first place).

Why do we wanted the stealship , we bought the 23 Tesla model y, never had a problem, the transaction was so simple, it’s save the headache from going to dealship, people should go to KZbin learns about the Tesla sales transaction experience, it’s so simple and headache free, there is no sleazy salesman hovering over you.

I'd give it another 2 years for Waymo vs 3-4 for Telsa. I actually agree with Telsa's former lead FSD engineer, they are closer than Waymo in the sense of scale, multipurposiness - I'm sure in the future Telsa owners can upgrade their cars to become eligible for the FSD ridesharing market. I think that will keep MORE cars off the road. That said, I think these numbers are scales above what is predicted. I think people would be more hesitant to use FSD vechicles at least in the next 5 years or so until the tech has become safer. By the data alone in Telsa car's if you end up in an accident while the car is self-driving, you have a ~2% of fatality (death - 31 out of 1399). That is an insanely high percentage, for reference the national average on car accident fatality is roughly 16 for every 100k. Also there is no driver so if the service is as expensive, its smarter for the consumer to take a regular taxi/Uber so expect the cost of the rides to decrease sigificantly or this entire venture to fail miserably or only with lobbied legislation to ban/heavily tax private cars in cities. That is where Musk has the advantage having such a large marke share for so long, if he is able to figure out true autonomous driving, then the smart move would be to upgrade vechicles to be able to do so... for a price. That way liability is also transfered to the car owner rather than against the tech company in the case of accidents.
