Is cash still king? The coronavirus pandemic may cause a drastic decline in cash usage due to the risk of contamination. The unprecedented surge in the demand for contactless payment has also shown outstanding performances for major companies offering cashless payment methods, like Apple, Square and Paypal. Could covid-19 signal the end of cash in the United States and can the U.S. really function without physical currency?

@Brian Cameron Try telling this too the young generation. A majority of them only use Cash app's , debt card's, Credit 💳 card's. The percentage is really low for them using cash. barely any of these young one's are using cash in today's world. Its really sad. We will lose complete freedom if Cash is gone period. I just feel this generation is completely brainwashed.

As someone who use to work minimum wage of $8 and couldn’t afford a bank with all their fees, a cashless society would be horrible for a majority of people. Unless were to change to a digital currency like the lady mentioned, a huge group of people will be negatively impacted.
@WayningGibbous
@WayningGibbous 9 ай бұрын
Just not true, but i understand where you are coming from. 1. A lot of banks don’t charge fees. You don’t need to have a credit card. As long as you are just very basically fiscally responsible, you pay nothing for having a checking account + debt card. They often waive fees too if you mess up once or twice. 2. Think about the amount of change/cash you have misplaced. You never will lose your money like that with a debit card. 3. You have the opportunity to build credit when you are ready and the ability to practice and learn financial health. Being able to consistently save your money neaty and safely somewhere is how you build true wealth. You’re telling me you think its better to hide all your cash in your house or something. Face it, your perspective is flawed and biased. The first step to financial security is getting a bank account.

Despite price action< lately, bitcoin is still holding up and clearly aiming for at least $20,000 this week and this presents a chance for those who did not benefit from the last market surge. Now, is time to buy as much crypto as possible and one way to keep profitable is to trade. I followed an approach that positioned me and Henrik Bower's trade signals and analysis was very beneficial to me and still is. I was able to trade and return as much as 9 btc from 2 btc in the last few weeks. We need more forerunners in the space to help build the teeming population going into crypto

@S. Can encrypted data be hacked? Encrypted data can be hacked or decrypted with enough time and computing resources, revealing the original content. Hackers prefer to steal encryption keys or intercept data before encryption or after decryption. The most common way to hack encrypted data is to add an encryption layer using an attacker's key.

The biggest concern is when payment systems decide to not do "business" with you, i.e. Visa and Mastercard. How can they just decide to not do business with you and it's not considered a monopoly? There definitely needs to be laws against financial services blacklisting people or businesses without a mandate from the law.

If they goes to a digital currency it means they could turn it on and off at will they could control what you buy when you spend money what you spend it on. They don't want you to buy a specific car you won't be allowed to if they don't want you to buy any guns or ammunition you won't be allowed to if they don't like what you're buying or what you eat you won't be allowed to purchase, if they deem you bought too much alcohol in a day or a week or whatever they can stop that. I cannot in any way agree to completely eliminate cash and allow only electronic money. I believe that it would be extremely disadvantageous and very dangerous for the whole society. I think that it is worth paying cash, because having cash has always been synonymous with freedom and, in contrast, giving up physical currency would mean loss of that freedom. In my opinion: 1) Cash allows you to stay anonymous. Unlike electronic money, there is also no trace of the transaction on your bank account. If you pay by bank transfer or card, each of your expenses is recorded in the banking system. 2) You can easily hide cash - cash is a very convenient and practical solution. Cash cannot be blocked or taxed suddenly and quickly - just like money in your account. For example, the authorities could try to introduce the so-called Cypriot variant. In 2013, under pressure from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, the Cypriot government decided to grab some of the population's savings from banks. 3) When you pay with cash, you always spend less money than when you use a card, and you have more control over your expenses. 4) Using cash is free, and banks charge a commission for electronic money. 5) With cash - in the event of any financial crisis, stock market crash or war - you will have money. 6) Electronic payments cannot work without electricity and modern technologies, and cash does not need anything at all. I highly recommend you the book entitled "Cash is freedom. Why is it worth paying cash and preventing cashless society" by Rafal Ganowski. You can buy it on Amazon.com

The US is medieval. How does a country pump out so much innovative technology but fail to implement it successfully in their own country? I've never had problems in the UK, Germany, France, Spain or Canada with being cashless. I have had my wallet stolen and the cash was gone forever. When I've lost my credit card or had info stolen, I called the CC company and they handled it, problem solved in one short call and cleared from my account. No issues later. The American financial system sounds like it's just especially terrible. Google the percentage of Brits, Germans, French, Spanish and Canadians without a bank account or struggling to go digital. It's mostly just seniors and new immigrants in other countries.

Exactly my thought! To correlate cashless with discriminating the poor is, to me, a poor argument. We have successful stories like those in China and Hong Kong (Octopus cards) that, even the poor can use them without bank accounts and bank fees. Also, the thing about overdraft fees is that the account holders aren’t aware that they can deny having their accounts overdrawn in advance. There are also a lot of not-so-poor ppl simply avoid having bank accounts just to avoid being taxed on their income/wealth. Those ppl are more than capable to sustain deposits in apps like Starbucks. Speaking of Starbucks, how r they saving money by having $ in their own payment system, when ppl recharge them with anything other than cash? I’d imagine they will be paying the same fees if $ is recharged via a credit card or debit card. Can anyone clarify further? Thx

i used to use cash for nearly every purchase except bills which required checks/online payment with my bank card, and would have used cash for those bills if it was still like it used to be for my parents would you could go to the business's office downtown or authorized payment acceptance place and pay cash in person. i strongly dislike mixing payment methods... cash is only accepted at some businesses, some only accept cards, almost no business accepts checks anymore in person but they all typically expect your bills in the mail to be paid by check, and then you have online bill paying directly by card, but some now require it to be processes by some 3rd party like paypall, then you have my bank which offers a bill paying service but then they changed policy so that you only retain access/availability to that service if you use it at least once a month/every 30 days, so one of my bills everymonth has to be paid that way..but its a service provided in co-operation with a 3rd party it turns out and if i ever get a loan through my bank/credit union it says they themselves refuse to accept their own bill paying service as a form of payment... then you have cards which used to be read by carbon copy then by mag strip/swiping and now by chip/inserting the card and now some cards are tap to pay but most businesses don't accept that as an option yet so still stuck with chip insertion which wears the card out faster then mag strip swiping dramatically faster in some cases... and some people older people mostly still try to use western union or some other weird thing i've never been able to grasp how it works exactly called a money order...those have always seemed like a scam to me/illegitimate in some sense... it's just too much/too complex/too annoying... i wanted to jump up and down with joy when i first heard about applecard/apple pay and google pay... can't wait to see them gain more implementation/acceptance.. its also a shame that jewelry televisions service billmelater that was being implemented for a couple years at major retailers as well was scrapped as that would have been an amazing service if fully/properly implemented nationwide, especially if in conjunction with something like applecard/applepay.. i almost never carry cash anymore, its strongly discouraged due to my job as a security guard since i started working as one in 2008, every company i've worked for has advised not to carry cash at work or to and from work on your person. if i have cash its likely i have about 3 dollars or less if i have any with me at all. most months or even years i can go the entire month or year or nearly a whole calender year without making a cash transaction.. the exception to that used to be vending machines, but vending machines even though it took eternity it felt like accept cards now.. and a few have started accepting samsung/google/apple pay so now i use my bank card at stores, vending machines, gas pumps, buying things online, and all my bills are paid online...the only exception to this is i still pay my rent to my brother in law by check, he prefers it that way for his own reasons and i prefer it because if there is ever a need for a record or if there is ever a dispute i can pull up the picture of the check on the bank website..but the payment is pretty much always processed as an ach/account clearing house/electronic transaction... my income/paychecks are direct deposited... a couple times in the last 3-5 years i've pulled out 200-300 or so to have as backup money incase i eventually need cash for something, but so much time passes that i don't need it i end up eventualy helping someone out who needs the money or something or just forgetting i ever had it and going even longer without using it i've always been that way, if i earned 20 dollars growing up chances were i still had that same 20 dollar bill in my wallet 3 months 6 months or occasionally 12-15 months later without ever being spent/broken down into smaller bills/change.. quite often i'd break a 20 into 4 fives and still have 2 or 3 of the 5s left over months later. in general i think we should keep electronic/digital payments and the cash system and let people use either. the variety and redundancy/backstop are good things. i dont think people should be forced one way or another, let everyone find the right mix/balance for them. i still prefer checks and electronic payments and my bank card to cash, but i still recognize cash is neccessary in some situations/circumstances. also what people forget, cash is legal tender, everything else is just an alternate form of transfer/recording the transfer of cash.
