As a French guy living in the US, for 6 years now, I’ve always been baffled at how bad the infrastructures for transportation are. Roads are terrible with potholes everywhere. Bridges are all rusted, trains haven’t changed for 70 years. I know France is known for it’s road quality, but still, the comparison is harsh for the US. While in France the pavement is smooth, we also try new technologies to lower the road noise with the tires, or to have roads that filter the water so when it rains a lot your car will still have good grip. Some European countries, including a small part in France, are testing roads that produce energy.

In Illinois, Interstate 55 to Chicago isn't bad, but it isn't good either. And in Oklahoma, besides in the cities, the only decent roads are the turnpikes and Interstates. It's simple. Road construction is public work. This means the lowest "qualified" bidder receives the work. This leads to companies cutting costs by using cheaper materials which in turn break down much faster. Also, in most states, contractors are not held responsible to repair damages to the roads that they constructed. So, they have no desire to produce a quality end product. Many see roadwork as job security for the future.
@arturturkevych38164 жыл бұрын
It depends on the contract and quality control. In England the Kent council does a complete resurfacing once every 30 years now to be more efficient. For 20 years there is basic maintenance and the council does preventative maintenance to extend the life of the road.
@jamesgardner21014 жыл бұрын
Exactly my thought- I see the same contractors doing the same repairs on the same roads year after year. I'm not talking about fixing potholes- bridges that were constructed without regards to the water underneath and have to be repaired 3 or 4 years in a row. Always have lane restrictions on parallel roads that aren't being worked on during those times as well. Then there are the streets that get repaved and then dug back up so the sewers underneath can be worked on (I'm talking 3 weeks later). Good planning, city engineers! Maybe a warranty should be demanded of the contractors who do the work, or make road construction and maintenance part of state or local government departments and take the contractors out of the loop.

I know firsthand that lots of US roads are in disrepair (with objective data to back it up), but I wonder if there is a degree of confirmation bias skewing the perspective. For every problem pothole that I encounter, I bet there’s many more miles of road that I forget about because they weren’t problematic.
@mohamedabdelrahman22854 жыл бұрын
All solutions listed translate to the consumer paying for the problem rather than the state or the federal government. A bigger potion of our federal and state income tax should be allocated to infrastructure rather than privatizing roads to make the consumer pay more in tolls, which can rack up very quickly for typical commuters.
@stainlesssteellemming38854 жыл бұрын
@@mohamedabdelrahman2285 But if the State and Federal governments spend more tax money on the roads, those taxes still come from the consumers. But yes, the only way to improve roads is to spend more money (taxes or road tolls) and one way or another that's our money.

@@stainlesssteellemming3885 Taxpayers wouldn't pay any more in taxes than they do now if governments moved funds from other areas into ones to fix roads. *I have an Idea. Here me out.* •Make roads out of steel to make them durable. •Make tires of steel to decrease friction •But to save expensive steel's cost, Since everyone is going on same path, decrease the width of road and make cars drive one behind another. •We can attach all the cars. •We can increase the size of cars to fit more people. •And how about putting one big engine in front instead of putting engine on every car? •We can run an electric line on top to power the car and decrease the cost and save pollution I'll call this idea as Futuristic Track Pods. So sad qe can't do that in US rhat is ruled by oil companies lobbying govts

@ohmingfeng93512 жыл бұрын
@@ajayj6707 what about Singapore
@Christian-cb9jr2 жыл бұрын
@@ajayj6707 It's mostly because of the better citizen-to-asphalt ratio compared to the US. America has way, way too much highways spread out over relatively few people. It's impossible to properly maintain. Of course European countries are much smaller than the US, but the European Union itself is also quite large and has a much, much larger population than the US. So ''lower population'' isn't an excuse. If you look at a global average, the US actually has a very low population for its enormous size. Look at China, India, Japan or the EU. Average European cities are also a lot larger in terms of population than the average American city and they're closer together, meaning the roads see more vehicles per day. The reason why European roads are better is simply because the government manages road maintanence more effectively, there only are roads and highways where they're actually needed, and most importantly, public transportation is excellent. Germany for example has high speed rail going over 300 km/h (186 m/h) through the entire country. So do Spain, Italy and France. You can take a high speed train from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Paris, France and be there in less than 3 hours. Compared to 6 hours on the freeway. People don't NEED to drive here. Not only is taking public transportation faster it's also cheaper and better for the environment. There are always better alternatives than driving in the city, between cities, nationally and internationally.

5:54 hold on there buddy boy, California did raise their gas tax July 1st 2019 and now we pay 47.3 cents gas tax. The problem is very little of gas tax money goes towards roads. "...it's like trying to pee in one corner of a pool...it's going to go all over the place." -John Oliver
