How The U.S. Went From Overfishing To Underfishing

The wildly diverse fishing industry may be the only food product that relies on the cycles of nature. In 2020, the global fishing industry reached an all-time record of production worth an estimated $406 billion, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
The industry changed after the fish stock collapse in the 1990s, which was partially due to overfishing. In the U.S., an estimated 90% of fisheries are now sustainably managed. As of June 2020, 47 fish stocks have been rebuilt. Now, underfishing, which occurs when fish are harvested at a rate lower than would produce maximum sustainable yield, has become common in the U.S. America imports anywhere from 70% to 85% of its seafood, according to NOAA. In 2020, the national seafood trade deficit was $17 billion.
Some supply chains are murky. Many countries don’t have data on trends and stocks because they don’t have management systems in place, according to the FAO. The United States imported $2.4 billion worth of seafood from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in 2019, accounting for about 11% of total U.S. seafood imports, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Watch the video above to learn more about the U.S. fishing industry, market forces at play, the difference between overfishing and overfished, the role of climate and crime in global supply chains of seafood and what solutions may be on the table.

I bet Canada would have loved to have the opportunity to underfish before their cod fishery collapsed and still hasn't recovered even though they have had a TOTAL ban on fishing for decades now. Same goes for the sardine fishery that was once sustained many fishing communities on the California coast. It is a little too late to decide to underfish to save a fishery when fish stocks have collapsed. If collapsed fisheries have taught us anything it should be that the precautionary principle should dictate every decision we make about maximum sustainable yield.

Over fishing for a particular fish is only part of the problem. For instance the striped bass pop on the east coast was decimated. Now they restricted fishing with bag and slot limits. One of the main things that helped though was the restriction on Omega 3 fishing boats. These boats catch the fish that stripers eat. If you ever came across one of the boats it would make you sick. You could follow the slick and trail of bycatch to the boats. Where there are menhaden, mackerel, herring, sardines and similar there are stripers and many times there were hundreds if not thousands of dead stripers every day from one boat. One day we saw over a dozen dead 40 plus lb class fish. These boats also had an effect on salmon, tuna and other fish that eat these fish. We pushed for years to restrict these boats and until we started filming it and posting videos did they finally restrict them. Most of the help came from local and national news, they were surprised this was happening right in their back yard

Did they say Chinook salmon were at healthy populations?!?! From epa- Declining Trend Salish Sea Chinook salmon populations are DOWN 60% since the Pacific Salmon Commission began tracking salmon abundance in 1984. Between 2000 and 2018, the total number of Chinook returning to the Salish Sea has shown a relatively stable trend. However, during this time period, we also see a modest increase in catch and a modest decrease in fish returning to spawn, particularly over the last few reporting years.

If you listened to the video they were talking about east coast stocks. Your stocks have been getting better due to the removal of dams that blocked the water ways where the fish have to travel to reproduce and due to hatcheries. Part of the problem is also the 'fish farms' that raise Atlantic Salmon in western waters, the pollution from this farms is astounding and hatchery fish don't reproduce

“Stocks are called overfished if they're at low abundance, but stocks are often at low abundance, not because they're fished too hard, but because the environment has changed.” That is a nonsensical statement. If the environment causes a lower abundance, but fishing fails to decline accordingly, then the stocks are being overfished. If this guy is unable to understand the fact that the two cannot be separated, then everything else he says is suspect.

The only difference is one pipeline not being built, which was a completely unnecessary one that would bring absurdly expensive to refine shale oil to us. There’s a reason fracking is nowhere near as big as it was in the early 2010s, it costs ~$120/barrel to refine shale oil, so prices must remain high to make it a viable source, otherwise the taxpayer is footing the bill in subsidies. This is the same reason Venezuela’s economy collapsed in 2015 and onwards as oil prices lowered, while the Gulf states both in the Middle East and US were perfectly capable of chugging along.

There are many externalities that are a result of our overdependence on foreign imports and underutilization of our own resources. Some of that is covered in this piece. Poor traceability means opportunities for fraud and IUU fish in our supply chains. Human rights abuses occur in poorly regulated supply chains abroad. The livelihoods of our American fisherman and the largely sustainable industry in which they now participate, is now in threat of collapse with reverberating affects throughout coastal communities and the US economy more broadly. Consumers can take action by prioritizing purchases of American seafood products. The dollar is powerful, make it count.

The Japanese and Chinese trawlers that overfished Africa and the Caribbean can't get into the US waters because of the US Navy and so the US stocks are okay in most places. Government corruption in Africa and the Caribbean is costing us our fisheries. The Consciousness of Man must now be raised

Demonstrably false. Fish stocks are collapsing across the US, especially with respect to cold water species. Salmon are all but extinct on the west coast.

You could just stop fishing altogether. It's not like humans will die out if we were to stop eating seafood.

Sadly, aquaculture is NOT sustainable, at least as practiced generally now. Sounds like a great idea until you get into the messy details, where it all falls apart

@@Dimitris_Half It would be a long elaboration. But for example, take salmon farming in Canada and the US. The Fraser River mouth has numerous salmon farms. Those fish are penned unnaturally in dense schools and this is an unhealthy situation for them. They have a high level of sickness and the pathogens from these fish blow off into the surrounding waters, sickening any wild salmon that pass. Been documented. To deal with the pathogens in the pens, the water is heavily dosed with drugs. The drugs blow into the surrounding waters and residue remains in the flesh of the fish. I've served on a research vessel that had divers researching these issues and seem the pictures that were brought back of these sick fish, the lesions clearly visible. Because their diet is unnatural, their flesh doesn't turn pink without the addition of a dye to their feed. And now this is the worst part. Salmon are a carnivorous fish. The pellets that they are fed are harvested by trawling the oceans, killing everything in the path of the nets, and turning the catch into pellets. Massive amounts of hydrocarbons are released into the atmosphere, and this a massively inefficient way of feeding the fish compared to wild fish which hunt for their food. The idea of aquaculture sounds great at first blush but in reality it is a disaster backed by lots of lobbying and cash spread about to the right politicians. There's more to be concerned about (like over harvesting of wild catch, genetic poisoning, etc.), but that's a long story. Bottom line: all is not well on the seas. See also Sea Shepherd, featured briefly, but unnamed in part of this report www.fraserriverkeeper.ca/net_pen_salmon_farming

shouldn't be relying on imports from fish farming when could do it ourselves, we have a border wall when can have a canal that can fish farm like Suza canal / 60 thousand a gallon for horseshoe crab blood and 2 thousand a pound for glass eels and oysters all kinds of money in fish farming and both sides of border wins into the space program of fish farming in space on mini-Oneill cylinders

UNDERfishing? The fish were getting along just fine before fishing was invented. What the hell is underfishing? Do we know think that everything must be subjugated to human desires, these food sources must go extinct so I can earn more than Jim down the street, or tom in another counrty?

There is no such thing as “underfishing.” You can fish at efforts less than maximum sustainable yield, but that is not necessarily bad.
