They struggle to understand the most basic concepts of finance while I know a little bit about programming and stuff. I guess it depends on the particular area of fintech one is planning to get involved in and the kind of roles they are looking for.

It's all finTech if it's done on a computer, banks have been using computerized ledgers since the 50's, it's just that bank "tech" is now legacy (& often written in outdated programming languages if a long-running company and ledger).
