I have no kids but I tell my boss I have kids. When they know you’re single with no dependents, they feel entitled to your time. Some bosses will expect you to do extra while another married coworker is enjoying their day off. You’re also less likely to get fired or laid off.

One of my professors in college said the US tax code is designed to promote marriage and home ownership. If you are married, you will most likely have children and thus create new taxpayers. If you own a home, you are more likely to be a productive member of society that contributes to the economy. If you are married and own a home you would be less likely to overthrow the government or cause problems because it benefits you to maintain the status quo.

I have so much peace being single. I get to come home to peace and quiet after a long day, no one asking me what "we're" doing for dinner or anything else regarding the use of my time. Finances aren't a problem for me. If you want to remain single, just get a good, stable job, preferably one with a pension, and keep an emergency fund for any unforeseen expenses. Invest in your retirement early. Make and maintain great friendships that last a lifetime. If you need a ride to the doctor, or help on occasion, a friend or family will be there for you. No need to jump into any relationship that you'll later regret. A lot of people marry to keep up with the Joneses. I've lived long enough to have gone to a lot of weddings of people who are now divorced. Do whatever makes YOU happy.

I see those stories all the time. Also not being able to do what you want, have company as often as you want, etc.... the roommate life is not for me. Yes, there is a great trip I want to take, but I would have to pay an extra $800 for it. I have been trying to get a friend to join me, but they can't afford it. The other issue I have is that sometimes, when I'm out in the countryside, if I'm at a table myself I get worse service. On the Oregon Coast I had a waitress outright refuse service to me because I was a woman by myself (there was no counter to sit at for this restaurant) and because I was a woman she couldn't do that "flirt with the dude" act she was doing with other tables. Overwork is the reason why people tend to feel lonely and unfulfilled. Even if you enjoy your job, there’s only so much you can get out of it. You have to have a life & identity outside of work and home. One issue is the expensive housing. The other big issue is not enough third places - places outside the home where you can just hang out with little to no expectation of spending a lot of money. It gets exhausting to find something to do without a steep paywall behind it.

My two greatest frustrations are 1) health insurance 2) and benefits that married people get at work. With health insurance, single people are tied to their jobs. We are more afraid to speak up at work because if we lose our job, we lose health insurance because we don't have the option to get on a partner's health insurance. We also have to stay longer in jobs environments that are toxic. I have had several friends who were able to leave their awful work situations and commit themselves to passion projects or have time to do a job search without a job, and they have greatly benefited from that. I'm glad they had that, but it's frustrating for single people to not get that. This would be eliminated if we have universal healthcare. With work, us single people have often have to cover for both people out sick and people who take sick time to care for a family member. When I am sick, I have to care for myself. My friends help me but they cannot use sick leave to care for me, so it has to be around their work schedule or they have to use vacation days or not get paid.

Well here's the thing. If you're single, 100% of the bills are on you. If you are cohabiting, you can share expenses but your costs go WAY up if you have a house and kids. I have a six figure income and I'm able to save a decent amount because I'm single and know how to manage expensees. Married people have to work work work just to afford to have a family which sounds exhausting

I’m married and my housing costs have gone down so much now that I can share the costs on a 2bed instead of paying for a one bed alone. Food, bills everything divided by 2. No house or kids for us so not sure why that is in your comparison. You should compare single parents to married parents if you’re going to mention kids

It's not safe being married and younger generations know it. Work your entire life to build security for yourself, and if one person wants to leave they can take everything you have on the way out. I came from the Asian household. 36, single, having love interest here and there and going out on a date and hiking etc. being single and splitting bills with your own family is so much cheaper. If your living with a non-toxic family, then it’s a win-win because parents get the chance to be look after such as their medical needs. Are people overlooking the tax disadvantages of being single. People keep mentioning how they’re managing their income, expenses/cost of living, debt burdens, and asset/liabilities while overlooking how much better married people with dual incomes make out-especially if they’re childless. Even a couple with a single income could likely qualify for a host of things and still gain tax advantages. People with kids get tax credits when they’ve chosen to take on that burden. They also get paid parental leave (not sure if many here have inquired whether FMLA applies to situations beyond parental leave because I find it really unfair).

This is not some made up economic 'penalty' for being single. We have 331 million Americans. You think we are going to make 331 Million houses for each individual person? How much will this cost? How much labor? Is it the government's responsibility to provide this? Since when has it become the government's responsibility to provide housing for the public? This is common sense supply and demand. The more (single) people demand housing, the higher the prices will rise. You can't escape that. Want housing prices to fall? Get married, have kids. Not only will there be less demand for housing, it will be much greener, since we won't have to create individual houses for everyone. The same old house of your parents, can be renovated and sold or renovated for the next generation, instead of making another house.

Means the government build homes and rent them out affordably, they collect the rent and it’s another form of income for the government other then taxes. It’s also what contributes to building more subsidized homes to generate more income for the government so they fund things like our universal healthcare. Yeah it took decades of investment and time for them to accumulate lots of subsidized homes, however in the long term it has been a good investment since they are getting a return decades later. It’s probably why America has a horrible state of homelessness, expensive healthcare costs, high taxes, a drug crisis etc because they never bothered to invest in housing. Should it be the government’s responsibility to invest in housing? Yes because it gets people off the streets so they can contribute to society. It’s also two birds with one stone if they make money from it in the process to fund programs that contribute to society, like scholarships, food programs, universal healthcare etc.

I hate grocery shopping for a single person. That bag of kale - I can never finish it before it goes bad. So many items are packed in large quantities. What I can, I buy as singles and not pre-packaged but not everything can be done this way. And that putting aside that I live in HCOL and my rent by myself is insane.

You can freeze many veggies (using the blanching method, look it up) and meats. Just get ziplock freezer bags and ration the portions and freeze immediately after purchasing. It saves a ton of money.

Yea and this is exactly why I am sharing my living expenses with 2 other roommates as a single person living in one of the most expensive areas of Florida. You don't have to be in a relationship to save money. You can split rent other ways. Some of my coworkers are living in one bedroom apartments that cost $2.3k a month and are living paycheck to paycheck. A three bedroom apartment isn't that much more expensive, so you can save a lot more. Yea it sucks to share everything, but it helps you get out of debt and allows you to save for a down-payment way faster. It's delayed gratification.

Housing and transportation are the two highest expenses for a single person vs. couples according to this video. If you are single and pay off your house and car, then it's not bad at all. This is my situation. I admit that it would be better to have a second income in the house, but if a relationship is not a healthy one, then it could really make my life miserable.
