Flying is 190 times safer than driving. Which makes it 99.47% safer. This is deduced from a 2022 study which studies fatalities per 100 million. Where flying is at 0.003 per 100 million for flying, whereas driving is at 0.57 per 100 million.

This happens every hour of every day in thousands of locations across America. And it really has nothing to do with it being a military helicopter - civilian helicopters also operate in the vicinity of airports in big cities all the time, under the same visual flight rules. The helicopter crew just screwed up and lost situational awareness for some reason.

The helicopter was flying under See & Avoid rules. That means they had no restrictions as to altitude, and were not under full control from ATC. In addition, ATC explicitly warned this helicopter of the AA flight and directed them to pass behind. The helicopter pilot was entirely at fault here.

Military aircraft have designated airspace in a corridor along the Potomac with stringent regulations of altitude and flight path. They HAVE to because of all the Govmt functions of DC and the Pentagon including Embassadorial duties. We DC area residents are used to helos from Fort Belvoir and Quantico.

Based on water temp, hypothermia would have taken any who survived the initial crash extremely rapidly, unfortunately. This is 100% a recovery mission and everyone in both the plane and helo have most likely unfortunately passed. My thoughts go out to the families and friends of all those who are gone.

human error. The commercial aircraft "owned" the airspace below and above the glide path. However, they still have the responsibility to fly in a safe manner. It is possible the ATC didn't inform the Helo right and left seat, of the approaching commercial aircraft, as it is possible the Helo right seat, didn't follow ATC instructions. RIP.. this is SO sad. This was the first thing The NY Times notified me on my phone this morning. As someone who travels for a living this makes me more gracious for life. I’m hoping on a flight next week and will be praying. God bless
