I recreated my recent Hotel Caravana neon sign as a scaled-down, backlit "can" sign by stacking individually cut slices to form the cabinet.

TOOLS & MATERIALS FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO
▶ DeWalt DWE7480 Compact Job Site Table Saw: amzn.to/2naVDlR
▶ Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty: amzn.to/2XwflhJ
▶ DeWalt 20V Max Drill & Driver Kit: amzn.to/2hLB64q
▶ Weller WLC100 Soldering Station: amzn.to/2CRccii
▶ LEDwholesalers Warm White LED Light Strip: amzn.to/2hLPkCo
▶ Mean Well 12VDC 3-Amp Power Supply (See Notes Below): amzn.to/2XB0Klc
POWER SUPPLY NOTES
Regarding the power supply listed above:
▶ I highly recommend the Mean Well series of power supplies, which I've now used for years without a problem.
▶ One spool of the LEDs listed above draws 2 amps DC, so if you're using a full spool, you want a power supply listed above that. I listed a 3-amp supply above.
▶ For other models, search for Mean Well APV. This series goes up to 3 amps. For higher amperage, or for outdoor use, search for the LPV series.
▶ These are meant to be general recommendations and not expert advice. Good luck!

Just an idea I had: you could mill 2 or more holes in every layer of your enclosure, and then put a rod through to perfectly align them while gluing. I think that would have made your sanding work easier. And the whole thing more sturdier :) Great video though!

Great video I'm a sign guy too and if that pvc is celtec or sintra I use these bits on the cnc, they are cheep and work great, no need for tabs or tape, I just put a few brads around the edges and the down cut leaves the dust in the cut to keep it in place. HOZLY 3.175X2X12mm Left Hand Single Flute Downcut Spiral And I think it's conventional cut that leaves the burs on the off cut.

When I was trained to use a CNC router I was told that placing all the entry/exit points in corners would cut down on filing time. The idea was that everytime you cut something there is an inevitable bump from the endmill and on straights it was more noticeable. I always wondered if it's a fluke on our machine or a problem all CNC routers have.

You have a great eye for details and layout, it's perfect! I also use VCarve, and wondered if you've experimented with "Climb" vs "Conventional" in your settings? It looks like you're getting a better finish on your scrap in some cases, and switching to "Conventional" might change that for you and save time finishing.

Awesome work!! The only thing I would have done differently regards the construction of the "body" of the sign. Instead of cutting numerous pieces and stacking and gluing them, I would have cut two (or maybe 3) of them, and cut some "standoffs" to make a skeleton frame. Then I would have wrapped it in fiberglass. Would have saved on the cost of materials.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! However, using 3 layers instead of 5 would've saved only about $18 in Sintra. And most of that material is reclaimed from the centers and can be reused. At this size, I'm not sure there would be any cost benefit to using fiberglass and resin.
@monteporche5552
@monteporche5552 5 жыл бұрын
@@WesleyTreat thanks for the info. Quick question, what thickness is that Sintra sheet? The thickest i can find is 1/4", but that stuff looks thicker.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 5 жыл бұрын
@@monteporche5552 I used 3/4" for the body, 1/4" for the faces, and 1/2" for the "flange" on the back. You can also try looking for Komatex or just expanded PVC sheet. I get mine from a local plastics supplier.

If I use my Puter I can't watch because they say I'm using an ad blocker but it been turned off on KZbin as long as I've been on the internet. nice job... what brand of tape do you use to hold down your blanks? ...when I stack material, I always find a way to pop in some sort of locating holes... then I can use a dowel and align as many layers as I want perfectly, and they don't shift during glue-up.
