I haven’t seen them sold in maybe 30+ years, but I still have a 2” thick power switch device that you would rest a CRT monitor on. It has five amber rocker switches, one for each device it powers, and a red rocker switch on the end to turn the whole thing on/off. Each switch only lights up when that device is receiving power. It’s basically a glorified power bar, with a circuit breaker in the back, but I still find it handy because I’m in a wheelchair and can’t easily reach a strip under the desk. Plus like you said, it’s a great way to see at a glance which devices are on or off!

Nice work. 1. The lid on the bottom is called, the base. 2. Even though you only needed 2 plugs and switches, I would have added a 3rd for future expansion.

This kind of reminds me of the old PC Power Center my family had for our computer, where everything was plugged into a thin box that had switches on the front that could turn on and off each individual part of the PC and peripherals as well as switch off the main power.

Bro, I've watched 2 mins and 20 seconds into your video and I'm facepalming like Captain Picard. You can buy a pack of remote AC outlets, like 3 for less than $20, link it into Home automation on your phone in 3 seconds, and setup a little script that allows you to turn the outlet on/off by talking to your phone, and you can make a little script so it always turn off a device after a designated period of time or during certain hours.

Have you already heard about Elgato Eve Energy Outlets? You can easily plug these into your regular outlets and control them over your phone. Even though they're pretty nice, this project is a true masterpiece.

Here's a thought: a second display showing the current high score streak. That way if you have 36 days in a row before a dumb, at least that 36 lives in the "high score" slot - till you beat it! Might be less encouraging than constantly starting over again.

Those are some very nice switches. I altered a setting in Windows that makes the Power Button on my computer's Case turns all the screens off. Speakers consume very low power when not making sound--I'd never feel like this project was worth it for my desktop real estate, but those are some very, very nice switches.

Very nice build! I'm curious, was there a reason to run two separate input power cables? I know you where imitating the line schematic you had before (two separate power strips) but seems like the new box could have been run off of one single line. I guess it would give you the option of using the box on two separate mains circuits?

Two cords with male connectors going into the same box. 😬 Even given the fact that they are for separate circuits, this is a no-no.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 2 күн бұрын
What problem do you think this would cause?
@stickmenwithrayguns
@stickmenwithrayguns Күн бұрын
@@WesleyTreat At first glance this doesn't seem like a problem. But a standalone "appliance/extension cord" should only have 1 "mains" input! ( Unless it's a redundant setup with independent power-supplies. ) Two parallel circuits sharing the same cabinet is highly unorthodox. Why don't they just share the same input? I wouldn't go so far as to call this device illegal, but it's a major faux pas. 🤨 A homemade device that contains built-in "mains switches" should ideally have a couple of fuse holders too. Especially since you are using "single-pole" switches. 😉 Kudos for the grounding of the front plate and great idea for DIY box-making 👍 Although I doubt I will be able to achieve the same finish. 😅

Like the solution but cringe seeing any space heater and power strip or extension cord as the amount of fire they have caused, I get to see a lot of aftermath both real and in training materials... Working on Life Safety/Fire Systems I get exposed to it probably more than most.

I'm surprised you didn't use a single DPDT switch with two outlets, so that both the lamp & the space heater turn off & on simultaneously. Wattage wouldn't be a concern because (in the US) all 15A outlets have a max of 1875W whereas space heaters are all max 1500W. The lamp is negligible wattage.
