In the paid version would I have more of a library or description of the bits or cutters, like single flute end mill ? I'm guessing the flat tip is an end mill, but the other cam program I was using, or struggling to use, had many option, and I'm not sure how important it is, but there is v cut and I don't see that on the list. Which edition are you using in the video, entry or expert ? Ok, in the free edition I can not set the layer heights, so I guess I would need one of the other editions. Do you guys have a chat or email for me to ask questions before I purchase ?

Hi Bill, Sorry for my slow reply, I have been on vacation. In the video the Multi-Axis edition was used, as that is the version that we normally run. All functionality that was used however is present in the Entry edition. The naming of the cutters can indeed be confusing, as not all manufacturers use the same names. We do not use "end mill", as that can mean both a cutter with a flat tip and a cutter with a ballnose tip. So "Flat tip" is used, as that is not ambiguous.

How to you add different milling bit like a 60 degree V bit or a 2 flute flat end mill?

You can add cutters in the Library of cutters (Options menu): press the button Add. V bits are called Conic cutters. For information about any of the settings press the Help button in the Cutter definition dialog.

When using STL data (geometry machining) in DeskProto you can use strategy 'Contour only": that will result in a 2D cut around the geometry.

The answer is that DeskProto cannot be used to control the CNC machine. It has for instance no options to set the zero point on the machine. For some machines the NC file can be sent directly to the machine. This does in fact only work well with machines made by Roland DG (Japan).
