CNC milling aluminum trucks for this DATRON longboard deck is an awesome way to have fun and improve machining skills. In this video, the machining speaks for itself!
At the 2018 IMTS trade show, a Datron M8Cube machined the incredible features and surface finish of a longboard deck--- and when they send it your way, you FINISH making the parts needed to make it functional!
In this video, we're CNC machining aluminum trucks using both 3-axis and 5-axis milling.

For all the work that went into it, it deserves better than those hex head bolts that aren't even long enough to reach the nylon in those lock nuts

When I was a kid, a hardcore skateboarder told me I was riding "Goofy Foot". Left foot on the board, pushing with my right foot (back foot). Glad to see I'm not alone! Hahaha!!

How would locktight green compare to using JB weld for the axles? I use the green on my ARs and it works great.

Aluminum boards are interesting beasts all on their own. I have ridden a few that were made using water jet and a break press. They were only good for DH riding and weighed A LOT. I am curious as to what aluminum was used for the deck and trucks? Eithere way, all around looks great! As a machinist and longboarder, my bucket list does include making a set of trucks! Enjoy that concrete wave!

Why not set screw in the axles instead of jb weld?
@ratdude747
@ratdude747 4 жыл бұрын
screw comes loose, rider go BOOM. JB weld is less likely to fail once set. The Aluminum will give before the steel does... so its not likely that an axle will ever need replaced w/o replacing the whole truck.

So some operations are done with flood and some with mist coolant. Is the mist only to facilitate a good video, or is there an advantage to the mist over flood coolant for these differing ops?
@cpbacon53511
@cpbacon53511 4 жыл бұрын
i always thought that you use as much coolant as possible while machining aluminum.
@alexpinson7759
@alexpinson7759 4 жыл бұрын
Some machines have it and some don't. The 1100M where you see the drilling of the trucks is a newer Tormach and we have flood coolant on that - but I only used it for the extra Z travel I needed to stand a piece of material that tall on end. Then I switched to our 770M with only mist coolant because it has a higher max RPM which made all that material removal faster

Beautiful and awesome project. But out of curiosity, is aluminium a the best material for skateboards? Since it's rather stiff and you might want some bounce. And constant flexing in aluminium might make it brittle from what (little) I understand of the material.
@alexpinson7759
@alexpinson7759 4 жыл бұрын
It's surprisingly bouncy! DATRON did a really good job with the pattern on the bottom removing just enough material to make it light and flexible but leaving enough in a pattern to keep it strong. As far as fatigue, only time will tell but I don't see it flexing enough to cause issues. Plus it's not actually being ridden regularly :)

Nice! But the bolts are a little bit to short. The Nylon part of the nut has to go through the bolt. ☺️

To bad those axle bolts are gong to pull out eventually.. There is a reason conventional trucks have a one piece axle going all the way through them. No amount of epoxy could ever stand up to the abuse of regular use. Also. Is it just me? Or did they mount the trucks backwards?
@YorgoPetsas
@YorgoPetsas 4 жыл бұрын
- Not true, many high end precision cnc trucks come with interexchangeble axis that give you the option to have differente width of the trucks. The hanger should be more narrow than this one of course. If you are curious I can give you several examples. - On the other hand I am amazed how can one put the hanger into the base plate without a pivot cup (and yes the reverse pivot is interesting idea, not sure if a good one). There is a lot of movement, frection and weight there so having two parts of aluminium rub eachother is a quarantee that this trucks can't last long. - Regarging the design, well that is subjective I believe.

He literally made them himself. If you filled a set out of a billet, yours would be DIY.......and then some random would complain you took it too literally because they don't have a file.....or aluminium.
