Cnc router tramming check using pro edge guages. Tram your spindle!

Perfectly set up with pro edge spindle tram guage .
It has to be right - or it’s not right :-)
CNC router spindle tramming is critical for fine pocket finishes and non tapered edges on your jobs.
this is my method which is a lot faster. screw down some MDF and fine skim a pocket as a reference surface. i use a 5mm bit with 1mm stepover. this will give a nice clean reference surface datum to your x and y axis rails.
set both guages to zero with the spindle in the middle of this pocket. now rotate spindle to read the difference. first check the vertical surface parallel to the rails and shim accordingly. then spin the guages 90 degrees to confirm the other axis. re check once everything is tightened down.

This only works if you already have the machine trammed. You would end up with ridges and valleys if it was out of tram. Better to use a precision surface such as glass or granite, then shim to zero in each corner. Takes longer but its more precise.

It works fine as you are using a very small diameter with low step over - so everything is flattened. For our production machines we do use a precision granite surface

@@cnc-routers-uk fair point I suppose it all evens out plus for smaller machines I guess the accuracy you can get is going to be limited by other factors anyway. I might pick up some high density MDF to try this then, might be quicker.

The mdf grade I use is high density Pretty smooth once fine skimmed . As you can see in the video under 0.01 mm deflections
