Okay, quick question, what happens to the sea creatures that get caught in this net. Am I missing a video? Because I do not see how you could get absolutely not sea life caught in this net. Kudos for the project, don't get me wrong, I am absolutely grateful for what you do. I just know that a lot of sea animals and plants have been badly damaged. This maybe s chose the lesser evil, but with enough minds on it, we can figure out how to make this a win/win situation.

Let's try some math. Their goal is to reach 100kg per hour of trash collection, that is 2400 kg per day, which is 2.4 tons per day x 365 days is 875 tons per year. Currently conservative estimate puts the amount of plastic at 150+ MILLION tons today. Lets also pretend then 15 million tons of new plastic are not entering the ocean each year. So, to clean up the mess in 10 years like they tell you in the video, that would be 15 Million tons per year, and with each pair of ships collecting 875 tons per year, you would need 17,150 pairs of ships, over 35,000 ships working 24 hours a day collecting garbage. There aren't 35,000 ships of this size/type on planet earth. This whole project is not realistic to accomplish the goals it claims it can. Simple math shows you its all bull.

@@DavidSchneiderIP Chemistry has compromised a solution. Petrochemical companies want nothing more than to invent a new polymer that doesn't rely on petroleum. Demand for such a product is high and it would be immensely profitable. It just doesn't exist yet. Plastic has been a god-send. Look around you at everything made of plastic and think about the extra cost and weight that would be incurred if you had to make the same product out of wood or metal. A lot of products simply wouldn't be feasible, much less economically viable.

saving sea life is helping to save the earth??? This also helps to show people how much waste there actually is, which can influence change to use less plastic which produces harmful chemicals that is killing wildlife and the earth. I agree that a lot of people advocate to save the earth for their own vitality, but you must be ignorant if you believe that cleaning plastic out of the ocean isn’t beneficial to the planet at all. Please do your research next time you comment.

Actually the rubbish raft in the pacific is mostly garbage that has been dumped on land and found its way into the river systems and then to the sea. The reason it collects the way it does is due to currents. Don’t blame sea vessels for the problems that you and I have caused.

A long while ago, the NYT published a series of four articles called Outlaw Ocean (I don't like the NYT much but these were excellent). They basically described how incredibly difficult it is to regulate any operation in international waters. Poaching, polluting, dynamite fishing, slavery even. There needs to be a joint global effort in that regard.

Where can the sunglasses be purchased? Kia! The new leader in automotive manufacturing. You know anyone below the age of 50 will be buying one! I always felt horrible for being part of a generation that surely was/is responsible for most of the plastic waste. How could we have possibly known that Big Oil, Big Business and Big Waste were lying to us? I love our planet! I have felt protective of our multitude of diverse life forms to be found. I rejoice every time I look out my window, smell fresh, cut grass, or so many other things that remind me of what an amazingly intricate and incredible beautiful planet we call home. I would never desecrate my Home! Excellent, excellent, excellent work to Ocean Cleanup and crew. You are such an inspiration. @@ericbuhrendorf What the heck do you replace plastic with? Wood? Metal? Taxing it sounds good, but the vast majority of these plastics come from countries like India, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, etc. They can't afford a tax on plastic, and their government would never allow such a tax. The fishing industry is responsible for a lot of it as well, but whats the solution to that? We can barely keep Chinese fishing boats out of protected waters. How are we going to regulate whether they clean up their nets?
