The scene of it rolling back into Minersville in that early evening December light with the lights in the building is beautiful.

4:40, christ, that is some fierce lurching and swaying, almost thought it was gonna sway itself right off the track.

The sparks at 3:21 are due to likely some rust on the railhead and very limited slipping of the drivers. Diesels will do the same where there exists rust or dirt on the rail. For very poor rail conditions (rain, snow, leaves) on the rails the 1970's diesels had a load reduction setting for the lead axle to clear the rails so the other wheels could get full traction. Steam didn't have this option.

Big Jim as usual concise descriptive narrative and superb video...can't help noticing the rail beds in Minersville, PA area so poorly maintained by comparison to the Union Pacific's rail beds in the west. Union Pacific is oldest and largest(8,000+ locomotives) RR

Union Pacific is also a major Class 1 railroad with constant freight traffic and top-notch track. This is one branch of a regional railroad, that isn't as heavily used (it is used, but not heavily) as a UP mainline.
