This is great craftsman ship. But again is old school, You can take 2" foam turn on end cut side of bend half way tough in 1/2 cuts and bend anyway you want and create any grade you want.

+arthurhouston3 The foam works well but I think Bill likes the stiffening of the structure and the silence that wood gives over the noise made with trains running on foam. Especially on the big layout. I have heard that folks have put in foam then ripped it out because of sound issues.

+CNLVN once you glue the ballest down there is no deference in sound no matter what approach you do. This was studied in several groups by people who measured it.
