My thoughts exactly. He's smooth, and he knows exactly what to say to whom. One one hand, he _sounds_ like he'll work for democracy, etc., but then again, his focus on "building institutions" doesn't say _what kind_ of institutions. For all we know, he desires Sharia law controlled by elder councils or something. I really hope they get elections though, and perhaps just as importantly, regional governments; I could see it becoming a the predominantly Kurdish territories does not have some form of self-governance, for example.

I understand that, however, the government of Syria warring against its own people is clearly unsustainable and undesirable. At some point, a party or parties had to shake them off. It just so happens that this is when Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah are weak and there is political will to send US assets to stop Iranian forces flowing in from Iraq. If the party that takes the lead in ending Al Assad’s government is also talking about discipline, strong institutions, and assuring the world that ethnic scores will not be settled, well that is worth something. It could certainly be worse. I don’t believe his view of the law, or civil life are parallel with my own, however, I am choosing to be optimistic. The war could be over soon and the country could transition to a stable country relatively swiftly. Being cynical makes people assume you are more intelligent, but it doesn’t make you more likely to be correct.
