Laura Coates was a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, before becoming a prosecutor as assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. In her new book "Just Pursuit," she reveals the reality of working as a Black woman within a legal system that is widely considered racist. She joins Michel Martin to discuss how the pursuit of justice can create injustice.

What a brilliant, highly articulate, very thoughtful person, a person whose humanity shines throughout the interview. On a side note, I reject the notion that if America could just cull out those "few bad apples" the American justice and law enforcement system would be near ideal. The rot runs deep and "a few bad apples" ranks as a gross underestimation of the extent of the problem.

Laura strikes me as an utterly fascinating individual. i wish there were more Lauras in our justice department, bu sadly i feel she - and others who share her concerns about the powers entrusted to them and how they may be perceived simply through being present (context matters !) - are diamonds in the rough. i've said it too many times now - in the u.s. we do NOT have a justice system, we have a legal system, a difference with a destructive distinction...

Many times good people enter the "justice" system, including police and jail systems, and become all powerful, and dangerous, mean "overlords," who have lost their humanity and conscience. I have witnessed this transition with friends who entered the police force and one who became a prison guard. There are criminals and they should be held accountable but people in positions of power as judges, police, and prison guards need some type of mental health program to help keep themselves in balance and help maintain their humanity.

Excellent interview, excellent analysis! I have long been a supporter and fan of Mrs. Coates! Thank you Queen for your integrity and commitment to this work! I have worked at DOJ, and it was one of the most disgustingly racist organizations that I have ever worked for! As a black woman, I worked in the tech world. I cannot tell you how many times credit for my work was intentionally doled out to my white colleagues or my supervisors! The racist discussions were commonplace. White supremacy is rampant and an indicator of the systemic fall of justice and this country as a whole.

It often occurs to me while listening to an interview like this that much of our problem as a nation has less to do with our left/right divide than with our fundamental loss of integrity as individuals. I heard Marinne Williamson talk recently about the loss of formality started largely by her generation and the unintended consequences. I believe the loss of integrity at the individual level is one such unintended consequence. In my view, in our well-intentioned effort to remove the stodgy and backwater mentality of former generations, we threw out the deeply rooted sense of integrity and moral character and replaced it with a strong tendency toward moral posturing, group-think, and showmanship.

Very nicely said. I'm 62. Take a plane ride in Amerika these days. Inevitably someone will come shuffling onto the plane in their pajamas carrying a bucket of fried chicken, squeeze their overstuffed body into the middle seat, and promptly begin to yap away into their cell phone while picking at their bare feet jammed against the seat in front of them. None of these acts of themselves are indicative of personal integrity, but the 'give a shit' mentality is a slippery slope.

It's not clear that those from the past possessed a greater sense of integrity or moral character. There IS, however, evidence of a tendency to view the past with rose colored glasses. There's even "merch" that celebrates this tendency. It reads: MAGA.

Speaking as a Black American man. I have little confidence in the US justice/ legal system. I have witnessed first hand on multiple occassions the unfairness, unbalanced applications and biases. More and more of my brethren see things the same way. If the laws are unfairly applied to us, nor serve us equally, why do we continue to play the game? Why respect police and court authority? Why allow ourselves to be incarcerated or summoned before the court. This thinking is becoming far more prevalent in our circles. There are a lot of us. We are armed, trained and ready to revolt. White America had better get their shit together. Don't force us to become the true monsters you ignorantly fear us to be.
@hughquigley5337
@hughquigley5337 2 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a white American man, white America cannot be trusted to get its shit together. This country is made of many groups of people, and until the people in political office (currently most of which are rich white men) start reflecting the true makeup of America and start acting in the best interest of the oppressed, the marginalized, and the poor instead of the rich and powerful, then they are completely unacceptable. The only monsters here are the people who have subjected others to persecution, injustice, and enslavement, and to keep them from collectively rising up the powerful tricked the powerless into fighting each other (but that doesn't excuse any of the monstrous things done by the powerless onto other members of the powerless). I might not have firsthand knowledge of what the emotions behind the words you said above feels like, but I can empathize with you and admit that I don't know what it's like to experience the racism black Americans have received for centuries. Everyone deserves equal and equitable treatment by society, the government, the law, and the criminal justice system... and this is not the reality today. I think that I would be asking the same questions and feeling very similar emotions if I was in your shoes. I know that these are weak words coming from a random stranger on the internet, but I just want you to know that you guys are not alone in your righteous demands for dignity, respect, security, and justice. I will speak for myself, but I am sure that many white people (especially young and working-class ones) will agree with me when I say that this is an issue of no compromise. We need elected officials who feel the same way, and not just for performative bullshit. For whatever this is worth, I am on your side until we succeed or until I die. (Sorry I was kinda preachy in the first part of this message)

I have long thought, that what you have said here, is the answer to larger systematic issues. Community philosophy teaches the mind to look at a broader perspectives in life. People tend to get bogged down in daily interactions, and lose sight of the larger perspectives of their lives. And the other side is, that those with great success, almost always get there by looking at life in larger views. I'd pay you money for a link, or more clues to that documentary. Thanks.

There are dunces in every level of employment. Its so easy to get certified a fool in this country. And it's prevalent in ALL levels, not just cops. A black robe also can cover up many insecurities and human shortcomings. Its so refreshing to watch this person speak. One clearly sees and hears an educated person in action. But once I heard her speak, I became more elated by hearing intelligence mixed with a down to earth personality, oh and who also loves films. I connected beyond a name. What Laura Coates speaks of right now is racial hegemony along with some other things that show the need for Critical Race Theory. I'm discussing that now in my developing dissertation; how intersectionality and racial hegemony in the workplace affects Black female public and nonprofit workers' mobility, both socially and economically. I always believed our justice system was just. I was proud to live in America - until I was arrested for a crime I didn’t commit. First of all let me preface that I am mighty white, highly educated and had a pristine record before my case. I absolutely believe that it is worse for black and brown people; however, it is plenty bad for everyone who is not profoundly wealthy. Everyone in the process from arrest to conviction was highly incentivized “win” the case (find the defendant guilty). That most especially includes the judge and the DA. No one had any interest in listening to the facts of my case. It was such a factory. Everyone was found guilty. It has been almost 7 years since my case and I still feel a profound sense of rage at what happened to me. When I hear black and brown folks telling their stories of justice inequity - let me tell you, I BELIEVE! “For I was blind but now I see….”

We need land, schools, and counseling programs put in place. That shady WS group isn't ready to let this country go. No bipartisan on stuff to get the ball rolling🤔BBB who's against this. WS looking for a leader to bail them out.

When people feel alienated and excluded from the system, then the system becomes the problem. Public education seeks only to acclimate or assimilate people into the system without truly acknowledging the people's experience or even suggesting a new relationship. So we see ongoing trauma from a system plagued with inequities and hostility. The economists of the land were fully aware of those factories that relocated overseas during the late 60s, 70s & 80s seeking cheap labor, and the drug infestation didn't happen without the government's knowledge. It did not step in to protect its citizens, nor did it mitigate the chronic high unemployment among marginalized citizens. The system is cold and hostile, and the education system prepared a people to rely on the system as oppose to being self reliant. So now gangs are organized to circumvent the system or create a new system for survival. The hostility in the system creates more hostility in the street. Law enforcement then are just addressing the symptom of a deeper flaw in the system. Even the Trump forces are trying to reset the system to be even more hostile and anti-other people. They want a white utopia where they controls who get elected, and who distributes opportunities which can turn more people into criminals or revolutionaries.

One consequence of integration is naivete about what is really happening. With integration comes loss of historical accuracy. Therefore, Coates and many others are mid-career before becoming shocked by what America really is, was and will be for several generations to come. For example, as Michelle Alexander wrote, the NAACP was complicit in mass encarceration of its own constituents. In the fight to become "in it, but not of it" our Talented Tenth bring a sharp knife to an info war. 1592, 1602, and 1619; 1972 Papal Bull

Good one. Absolute immunity for prosecutors as per _Imbler v. Pachtman_, needs to be overridden by federal statute. There needs to be an incentive for prosecutors to care about justice, which they have no reason to do. And this isn't just a "black and brown" thing, no matter how much the media want you to think so.

Being on the other side can be a good place to be to help bring about change and fairness. However it can be a very precarious place to be if it turns out just to be the side that the enemy resides. Its very seductive to just go along and end up being only complicit. One must have a strong sense of self and an even stronger moral compass to be effective in such a situation, or to know when to bail out before being compromised and used.

This is why the establishment has gatekeepers and gatekeeping institutions, to try to keep people like Laura Coates out of positions of power. On the whole, give or take a relative few, they have not been completely socialized to do the bidding of the powers that be. They can be turned, but it takes too much self-incriminating effort to do so.

You haven't gotten near the underbelly of the justice system . The average person , including those who believe they have their finger on the pulse , don't see past the surface & numbers . The corruption isn't rampant . It's Universal . Unless you are there or have loved ones there , you will never know .
