I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps in the early 1990s. If anything that was classified in any capacity I would be locked up. I truly don't understand why someone like a judge would try to defend someone who has blatantly stolen classified material and taken them home to put in their bathroom. Even IF a Trump appointed AG was to somehow decide to actually keep the cases and not dismiss them (which any AG nominated would do), he would just fire them and find someone who would. A president, any president, who is charged with crimes, should not be able to kill those cases. That’s the definition of “above the law”. It’s already scary enough that the SC has given immunity for certain acts. Immunity isn’t the same as innocent.

The Special Counsel, as you have said, is appointed to eliminate the appearance of political favoritism. Janet Reno's appointment of Ken Starr in the Whatwater case is a good example of how that worked. Reno was nominated to be AG by Bill Clinton but then appointed a special counsel that definitely DID NOT show any favoritism toward the subject of his investigation - Bill Clinton. Jack Smith has only followed the law and where the evidence has led him. Please notice that Trump's lawyers and the Justices that have ruled in his favor have NEVEER suggested Trump was innocent, only that there is a technical reason why he can't be tried.
