I came back today to see the responses to my comment about the amazing speech by Hakeem Jeffries. The thousands of comments (mostly in agreement) tell me that we need to keep watch on this Representative. As one person stated, before this week I had heard his name but really knew little about him. This is the first time I have come to realize what a shining star he is becoming. If he leads as well as he speaks, if he truly is the person we listened to, we may have found the one around who the Democratic Party can unite. Minority Leader Jeffries, I too am a son of Brooklyn and like you I was also born at Brooklyn hospital. I left Brooklyn to serve in the Air Force to try and escape a city that was going bankrupt and in the grip of the drug crisis. Today with your words you have placed Brooklyn on the map again. You have articulated, in a dignified manner, what people like me aspire to. With your words you have let us know that there is still hope and that there are those fighting to overcome the forces that seek to enslave us with the tyranny of fascism and cults. Today you managed to give voice to the voiceless and hope to the hopeless. I wish you strength and support in your endeavors, but above all, I wish you success! You have made Brooklyn proud! The border is checked. That's why we have gates and guards on the highways between countries. The little bit of border wall that Trump had built did cause an increase of border crossings in that area because where there had been no roads to follow, roads were built to put up fence/wall. That gave migrants a road to follow. We need migrants. We had migrant farm workers and food prices were lower. Now we don't and food prices are up. That's just one example of how migrants benefit our country. Right this moment we're dealing with an increase in crime from citizens, many of them elected officials.

Remarkable speaker and speech, especially when you consider that he was delivering it at 1 o'clock in the morning after exhausting days waiting for the other party to elect their speaker. This could be a lesson in the power of well-chosen words and the effectiveness of rhetorical devices. Many years ago my husband and I were watching the Democratic National Convention where a young Black man with an unusual name inspired his listeners, and I turned to my husband and said, I think we just heard from a future president of the United States. I have a feeling that lightning may strike twice.
