Western propaganda makes them seem as though they are, but they are really quite progressive in the ME. And Iran was the original country fighting the Taliban before the US invaded Afghanistan. Right now, part of the reason ISIS is able to come back because the US and Israel have been attacking and trying to destabilize all the people that kept them at bay. Iran sent troops to advise and help Iraqis fight ISIS years ago - in fact they used to unofficially coordinate with US air assets. US air strike, Iran backed militias on the ground. In Syrian, Assad fought ISIS, and Hezbollah sent troops to support the fight against ISIS. Ironically, US "allies" like Saudi Arabia, used to fund militias in Syria that would funnel some of those funds into groups affiliated with ISIS. Even the US gave weapons to groups that turned over weapons to ISIS (back years ago, during the main Syrian civil war). Basically, it's a lot more complicated than one being "not extreme enough".
