As a black man, I can definitely feel you on this Sara. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago and after chemo, surgery, and radiation, I was able to beat it. Like breast cancer for women of color, men of color (black men in particular) have a higher risk for developing prostate cancer than others so although our battles are occurring on different fronts, we all go through this together. Actually, doctors now say, if a man lives long enough he'll get prostate cancer. And for most, if advances so slowly, it doesn't kill them - old age or some other deadly thing does. That said, minorities are more likely to get it sooner & have the more aggressive type. Early detection is critical. At the least so doctors can figure out which type & if it's metastasized. A family member had symptoms which he ignored until he couldn't. Never liked going to the doctor. When he was diagnosed, he was stage 4. His doctor has little hope, saying if he'd come in 4 yrs earlier, he'd have had a chance. He got a little lucky. New stem cell & specific DNA treatments looked promising. He lived another 2 1/2 yrs, mostly with difficulty. That doesn't seem much but at diagnosis, he was told he might only have weeks if the treatments didn't work for him. Get screened young. Get screenings as your doctor recommends. The life you save may be your own.

Dear Sara, as a survivor myself, I volunteer my time teaching yoga to cancer survivors. I admire your words so much. We are only given one life, and while you have now joined a club that nobody wants to be in, your club members will lift you up, and you will do the same for them. Remember when it gets very hard...breathe...and then the next breath, and then the next one. One breath at a time, make them deep when you are hurting. With peace, a long time viewer and admirer of your work.

Such is life...my wife went through breast cancer, then it spread to her brain, then to her lungs. Not once did she feel pity for herself. She cherished every moment in life and what she could extract from it. She smiled to the end loving everyone with her precious smiles and letting everyone know of her gratitude for them being in her life. It wasn't about her, but those she would leave behind. She lived a warrior's life. I hope you can do the same.

Well..... That was a powerful speech lady. I live in the UK so I'm not familiar with you at all, but you got me in tears today. I sincerely hope all goes well for you. I'm a 59 year old female that's NEVER had a mammogram! But you've inspired me to take charge of my health & book a appointment for next month to go & have my 1st. So thank you for that & lots of luck to you for the future. ❤

Please, please have your mammogram. Due to a routine mammogram my breast cancer was caught incredibly early. I had a minor surgery and radiation and 7 years on, I Have had no recurrence. I hate to think what would have happened had I not had the mammogram. Good luck with yours❤

Good for you for booking your appointment! I didn't have one until I was 51 (I'm 56 now)... my mother had breast cancer in '92 (she's doing great and is 84 years old now!)... so I really should have been getting them. I was beating myself up... my doctor said, "Well you're here now and now the journey begins... it only goes forward." So well done on taking that first step. You got this!!

Thank you for this. I lost my mother to breast cancer eleven years ago. As a care taker I wouldn't allow myself to cry or show much emotion during that time. I just kept saying, "fly the plane, fly the plane..." It wasn't until almost a year after she passed that I could shed a tear - I'm good in emergencies, but not so much with emotions. It feels good to let go and well up again years later, as I watch you speak. You're amazing. And an inspiration.
