@@chronictown4330 Jesus, yeah, I feel that really hard. Logically I know that these conspiracies are ridiculous, but there is a certain draw to them, if only to blame SOMETHING for how miserable we all are right now. And there are things to blame, absolutely, but they're all very broad and unsatisfying, like "Runaway unregulated capitalism," etc, or "A generation of highly active, but low-information voters who play for a team, rather than voting based on the issues." Reality, as always, resists simplicity. But simplicity is what we desperately want, when our head is swimming in cortisol, everything is stress, and anxiety, and the thin veil of civilization is giving off very distressing tearing noises as we all struggle to get by in a world that feels increasingly unstable. I think, one way or another, we're about to see real change. People can't feel this way forever, it's unsustainable.
@kenhall35183 жыл бұрын
@@chronictown4330 One of the big takeaways from 2020 for me was that, given the choice between ANY minor inconvenience for themselves, and possibly saving/changing/improving someone else's condition in the world, a dangerous percentage of people will go to any lengths to avoid that minor inconvenience, and that scares the shit out of me. We have grown ass adults who throw hissy fits when asked to wear a mask indoors, and it feels like watching a child bite and claw and cry and beg rather than brush their teeth before bed. Going into a world that's going to demand greater and greater individual sacrifices going forward, if we're all going to survive to see the year 2100, it's... deeply uncomfortable, to say the least.

I spent my pandemic realizing that the degree I picked was utter crap and wishing to switch right at the time if it weren't for the fact that going to university during the pandemic with online classes sucked even more. So I spend a lot of time playing video games and watching all kinds of media. Hadn't spotted this channel back then, so I'm now watching all the videos during the semester brake studying for a better degree. Luckily Germany does saddle you with tons of debt for going to college. I was born in 97 so I only get put in the Millennial category by people smoking stones. I however can identify with the Daria video a bit. There was a period where I believed nothing in life matters⛈ instead of ✨NOTHING ✨ IN ✨LIFE ✨MATTERS ✨. I still hold some optimism for the future but it's more the kind of optimism where we can get all the stuff outside the house before it burns down instead of the kind where you think you can save the house from burning down. In my opinion, that kind of thinking is pretty freeing.

Incredible stuff, and playing in that world and creating stories and characters online has been an irreplaceable experience. - spaces like your channel and other places where people are discussing interesting ideas in both media and our wider society has broadened my horizons and brought me a new perspective on art - i have listened to the Magnus Archives podcast up to the season 4 finale about 3 times now and specifically seasons 3 and 4 another time on their own. my 3 general comments: "this show makes me want to create audio dramas," "my mom liked this show," and "you should listen to it yourself if you haven't yet". - watching Star Trek TNG and DS9, really taking a lens to the creative processes and messages throughout the series. I'd never watched either series before so it was a great experience to see a lot of great (and not-so-great) sci-fi on screen. Yes I Know this one isn't really an original 'thing that got me through something' but I'm not going for originality here - listening to a lot of old R&B and soul music. Curtis Mayfield, my beloved.

Happy that your going back to regular content, and stuff I’ve been re-watching the backlog a ton over the pandemic so I’m very excited to see what you’ve got next

Can relate to that new PC feeling. After making do for so many years, it feels amazing to own something that is actually top of the line; it actually does what I want, when I want it to. It feels self-centred or consumeristic, or something, but I don't mind admitting that it made a huge difference to my headspace in the last year.

Our computers are in a very real sense extensions of ourselves, now (just as our phones are after all). I may be biased as an IT sort of guy, but having a good computer is the same as having a good living space - it may be a luxury, but it's a meaningful one that - as you say - genuinely makes a difference in one's life.

@@KillahMate yeah love this take. That and my phone are definitely extensions of my mind, they certainly store half of all my memories :P

3 good things that got me through are Drawfee, Playframe, and Bisnap. Drawfee is four artists goofing around and playing off each other, and honestly if nothing else watch the episode where they draw tarot cards it gave me life. Playframe is a let's play channel. They've done the Kingdom Hearts series, soulsborne games, and more, and the personalities of everyone involved are delightful. Bisnap is a youtuber who has been going for a while now. I've been watching him play the Binding of Isaac since it was a flash game, and he still uploads Isaac daily. It is just such a comfort to watch him play.

EMBASSYTOWN That's one of my top books, probably. China Mieville is an excellent writer and I absolutely adore his dive into scifi.

The first half was a beautiful case study in how to do an immersive world build without a drop of exposition necessary, and screw any writing theory that says it needed plot sooner.

I discovered Errant signal right after my kitchen burnt and I had to move to a hotel, it burnt because my sister had brought a boyfriend of hers that was supposed to be an architect to fix an electrical problem, it happened after my mom got diagnosed with cancer, and later we got infected by Covid. The children of doom and doom alone really helped me out, and I'm glad I'm not the only one

During this pandemic, I got to listen to a few albums with a friend so we could discuss them one song at a time. And one I absolutely loved and would recommend despite the language barrier is "Tropicália ou Panis et Circenses". Made a few years into Brazil's dictatorship, it is innovative, cheerful and, at the same time, highly critical of the things that were happening in society

I did not know this about the Jenny Lewis comment section but I have separately been a little bit obsessed with how f*ing great that song is over the last few months, returning to it or a shuffle mix of her works every few weeks. Just one of the Guys is her Nessun Dorma.

Accelerando is really a wild book. I love Charles Stross. He always writes those books that start really slow and seemingly unspectacular, but they always pick up such a wild momentum with jaw dropping twists and turns. You'll probably also enjoy Saturn's Children and You Are Dead.

I mean, for my part, I'd love some more of this every now and then. Even though your "usual bullshit" is what earned you my subscription, these smaller essays have been... I struggle to find a better word than refreshing, because while it has been that too, the feeling of something genuine is so much better, especially in the shared traumatic event that is a pandemic. Obviously not saying your "usual bullshit" is not genuine, but I think you understand the spirit of what I'm getting at. Point is, thank you for sharing your co-vids. It's been a good thing.
