Oh my GOD you just gave me a revelation when you started talking about these "holding spaces" and it being a place where someone is encouraged to be better without being judged, and I have almost incidentally been doing that with a friend from work. I am not ready to introduce him to my minority friends, they'd eat him alive and I'd lose him. But literally just today he was talking about learning how to recognize when his frustration builds and that if he isn't on top of it, he can lash out and be cruel. He doesn't want to hurt people but in his anger, just like any of us, he can act irrationally (paraphrasing his words). My response was that everyone can make mistakes but it is amazing that he is self aware enough to recognize when his actions hurt others, and that the important thing is that he actually wants to work on that. I can see he has been making progress and I want to get him out of his loneliness and invite him into my lefty friend group, but I have a long way to go before I do that. To bring this back around though, I am no longer mentally stressed about this. I will work with him, encouraging and nonjudgmentally, at his pace until he either goes, uh, woke I guess lol, or regresses beyond where I feel I can reach him. It's all on him, but I can be there to help. It isn't my responsibility to make him a better person, but I feel like I'd be a horrible person if I didn't encourage people to be better when they are trying. Right now I am his holding space. And the best thing I can offer him is hope. Hope to be better. Not just that he will be better, but that everything will be better.

My deradicalization started because of a debate actually. I was in middle school and was arguing with a girl about abortion rights. I’ll never forget it, I was pro life, no exceptions. The thing that I love about The World's End is that the Cornetto Team essentially made their own genre, then chose to subvert it.
