The differences between CO2 lasers and Fiber lasers can be pretty complicated. But when we set aside the science, what does it mean for function and application? Tim explains just that.

Thank you! Currently, the only galvo lasers we offer have a fiber source. If you want to cut paper, I'd definitely suggest a CO2 laser. You can find galvo lasers with a CO2 source, but currently we don't offer any. That said, if your decision to go with a galvo head is based on speed, I can assure you that gantry systems are extremely fast when cutting paper.

@FullSpectrumLasers

The general rule of thumb is CO2 is used for cutting and engraving, and Fiber is only used for engraving. The trade off is a fiber is going to engrave with much more detail. The fiber is able to engrave on all sorts of materials, but it's unable to engrave on glass (a fiber machine IS capable of engraving on metal). It also won't engrave well on softer plastics as it will melt the plastic. For softer plastic and materials like PVC you'd want to jump up to a UV engraver which generally used for marking and light engraving onto materials. Because it's a lower powered machine and engraves with more detail than the Fiber, it's able to mark on other plastics the fiber and co2 won't.

Do you have a recommendation for the best machine that can engrave polymer pistol frames?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
Galvo fiber lasers are typically the standard when it comes to engraving firearms. If you're strictly doing polymer, you could use a CO2 Gantry laser, but the speed you get with a Galvo Fiber is really second to none. Our Muse Fiber would work really well. Our RE3 software is a lot user friendly than most other Fiber laser software too.

Solution assistance. 304 stainless steel #8 with white protective layer on it and 3M double sided tape on the back for automotive custom parts. Mutiple manufacturer's parts have burn marks on the edges where it makes the pieces look bad. What would be the best setup, laser wise for precise cut and clean edges? I always wondered if burn marks are stronger or lighter appearance wise with or without the protective white layer over the #8 finish on the 304 metal sheets. Basically I have manufacturers producing parts for us and I'm getting tired of consumer complaints about quality. I'm considering doing it myself if I can get better quality. I've only run a waterjet in the past, so lasers are new to me.

can u cut thin copper plates with a fiber/co2 laser? (ive heardt its rlly difficult to melt/cut copper with a laser)
@charmio
@charmio Жыл бұрын
That's because copper draws away the heat so well. A fibre laser is pulsed so it can dump in huge amounts of energy into the copper in a fraction of a second, before the heat gets drawn into the surrounding metal. Copper is also a good refector which does not help either.

Hey I’ve got a fiber laser (M-Triangel BY5) and I was wondering, what type of protective goggles would you recommend? 1060nm is my laser’s wavelengths.. Also is it safe to look at at least the red aiming “reticle” light of the fiber laser? I know obviously looking at the marking light (actual laser) is dangerous and I avoid it, but I was wondering if the red light was also harmful. Thank you.
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
When looking for safety glasses, just make sure that they are rated for the same wavelength. Most YAG laser goggles will list the wavelength they're rated for. In terms of the red diode laser, looking at it at an angle is relatively harmless. If the material is overly reflective, or you look directly at the source, it can be harmful. It's basically a laser pointer, so the same safety guidelines apply.

A CO2 laser will get almost no depth on any kind of metal. Best you'll get is a light surface abrasion. To get any depth on metal, it has to be a fiber laser or a very very powerful CO2 laser, but were talking Kilowatts of power.

How deep can a co2 laser engrave stone or cement and which model is recommended?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the stone, engraving with CO2 lasers doesn't produce any depth, it merely causes a surface abrasion that alters the color. Relatively porous cement is slightly different. With one pass, you could maybe get .5mm of depth, but it really depends on the makeup/density of your material. As for model, you'll want a higher power machine with a 120 or 150W laser tube. I'd recommend our Pro-Series of machines. Our hobby lasers can still engrave on stone and cement, but would take multiple passes to get any depth.

It's the same concept as engraving, you'd just want to do fewer passes so it's just marking the surface and not engraving depth. Steel marks pretty well. I haven't tried with those specific types, but I imagine they would mark just fine.

You should get at least a 100W mopa. Cutting steel is much better with 2kw CW laser with assist gas ~around $60k with 4'x4' bed single phase 220v. MOPA laser is better for engraving and cutting aluminum/brass. Steel it cuts but it's not super clean like 2kw CW. CW can't do quality engraving so different laser for different purposes.

What would you recommend to cut 1-2mm metal sheet?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
going through metal can really only be done with a high powered fiber laser, or a very high powered CO2 laser. Fiber Galvo lasers could conceivably go through thin metal, but if you want precision, it's not the best idea, as your edges won't be square and any variation in focus height will cause your sizes to be off.

I'm brand new to laser engraving and just picked up a 40w CNC Fiber Laser myself. Using factory settings I can engrave any of those black laser cards for sale on Amazon fine but on any other metals - nearly nothing! What could I be doing wrong? I've looked for a depth setting in EzCad which it came with and didn't find anything, I tried all different random MhZ and power settings and still no change. I can see a very slight marking if I set it to loop 10x for instance but not much beyond that yet the manufacturer shows it cutting deep into firearm slides and such. Of course out of China I'm getting no support so just wondered if any of you experienced engravers might know what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry to ask a year after posting, (somehow exactly to the day haha) But I recently started a Firearms Manufacturing Company. Our primary material we need engraved is 6061 T6 & 7075 t6 aluminum and. As per ATF regulations, products need a marking depth of at least .003 inch for firearm identification. I'm to understand that a Fiber laser is best for this application, but what wattage is recommended for ample engraving time at those depths on the aforementioned materials? Also, assuming I only have one part such as a frame or receiver working at once, which model of laser would you recommend?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jared. A lot of our fiber laser owners buy them for that exact purpose. You can definitely achieve MIL-SPEC depth with a fiber laser. As for wattage, you can achieve the same depth with a 20w or a 50w, but the 50w will be much faster and need less passes. When it comes to the size of your engraving, that's going to come down to the lens you're using, not so much the model of the machine. We offer a 163mm lens which has the best detail, but the smallest workspace at 4" x 4". But we go up to a 420mm lens that offers a 12" x 12" workspace. If I had to recommend one of our machines, it would be our Muse Galvo machine with a 254mm or 330mm lens.

@@captianjudd8387 Yes, with our Open Galvo machine, there's not much in the way of size limits. If you're looking for the best detail, I'd go with the 163mm lens.

Can a fiber laser cut through a 2mm stainless And then engrave a portion by 0.64mm deep in one setup?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
Typically, fiber machines specialize in one or the other. A high powered Galvo Engraver could conceivably cut through 2mm steel, but given how galvo machines work and the angle of the cut, your edges wouldn't be square. It would also likely take a significant amount of passes to get through 2mm metal with say a 50w laser. In terms of cutting machines, they don't typically have the precision to do any detailed engravings. So technically, yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.

nice video, but comparison is not comprehensive enough. CO2 laser machine has different type : Gantry plotter type, 2D galvo scanner type and 3D galvo scanner type, all of these are widely used in the normal industry. Fiber laser machine also has different type: Gantry type metal cutter, 2D galvo scanner type marking machine, also 3D galvo scanner type. Different structure makes them different speed and different application. So this video just compare the Gantry type CO2 laser plotter with 2D galvo scanner type fiber laser marking machine, if can add more options, could be much better. :)

Thank you for your feedback. This video is mainly to illustrate the difference between the machines we offer to our potential customers. We are aware that there are CO2 lasers with galvo scanners, but as we do not sell any, we did not include them. The same goes for the 3D galvo scanner machines. We do not sell them, therefore we did not include them in the video. Our customers ask about the difference between Fiber and CO2 lasers all the time, and adding reference to machines that we do not offer would more than likely add to the confusion.

The best solution I can think of would be to hook up some kind of vacuum system where you have access to the catch tray. The particles produced from metal can be very small and hard to collect.

There are CO2 Galvos that exist, but we do not manufacture them. They also lose most of their cutting power under a galvo configuration and then only referred to as marking/engraving machines.

You didn't say anything about if a CO2 laser can etch metal.or not ?
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 2 жыл бұрын
CO2 is very inefficient for metal. Unless you have a high wattage source with oxygen assist it's not really a viable solution. Fiber is much better at engraving metal. This is because CO2 and Fiber operate on different light wavelengths. Steel is very good at catching fiber wavelengths but doesn't react at all to the CO2 wavelengths. The inverse of that is that CO2 is really good at engraving glass where fiber sources pass right through and don't etch at all. Hopefully that answers your question!

CO2 Lasers CAN cut metal, with as low as a 150w laser.
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 3 жыл бұрын
Yes CO2 lasers CAN cut metal. However it's typically very thin sheets at very high wattage. You can cut thicker metal with CO2 lasers as well, but those types of machines are generally prohibitively expensive. When customers ask about cutting metal, they typically want to cut thicker stock like 1/4" steel. This video simply illustrates that within the price-range most of our customers attempt to remain in, cutting metal in general (let alone with a CO2 laser) is not practical. Thank you for your concern.

@falmircamion3534
@falmircamion3534 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, ok. but my point is that it is low pressure gaz (vacuum) and not compressed gaz. The reason why it has to be low pressure, is that atmospheric pressure and above are much harder to keep ionized. You would need millions volts to have electricity cross your tube whole length if the gaz was compressed.

Nonsense. It is not the Fiber marking system VS CO2 laser that needs to be compared, but the Fiber marking system VS CO2 marking system. because a small standard business and it usually has both CO2 and Fiber, gad would cover a wider range of services.Then the question remains- what materials do you want to engrave / mark and all. Adding a UV marking system would be good for prof. video and now amateur league, sorry.
@FullSpectrumLasers
@FullSpectrumLasers 2 жыл бұрын
Did you mean to say "fiber marking system vs UV marking system" instead of CO2 marking system? Comparing fiber to CO2 is still useful for many people since 1. they're more affordable than a UV source, and 2. are much more popular, 3. first time purchasers often don't know the difference and 4. both systems can still engrave. We started building a UV around Christmas time that's been available since the beginning of the year. We have a video comparing the UV to fiber, as well as other UV videos on our channel as well.
