I've floated in between low gm and t500 for a few years now (masters this season, but let's not talk about it). This is the most accurate and helpful summary I've ever seen on how to rank up. I'd endorse basically every word of it. One thing I'd add, which you briefly touched on, is to play difficult heroes. Moira, Mercy, and Lifeweaver are heroes that make you hardstuck. While Tracer, Genji, Dva, or Zenyatta would be ideal, even someone like Mei or Ana forces you to aim a lot. In addition to that, a mistake a lot of bad players make is just blasting the tank all game, whether it be damage, heals, cooldowns, or ults. Start shooting at and fighting with squishies. Someone who goes from being a healbot Moira to an Ana who does 60% healing and 40% damage to enemy squishies will see their progression rate ramp up. Even if Moira is your calling, fade to different parts of the fight and try to duel the dps. This will force you to learn movement, cooldown tracking, cover usage, map knowledge etc. Just don't play like a healbot or tank shooter and you will get better.
@ElectrifyMySoull6 ай бұрын
Aww but I like being a healbot :(.. I'm really good at it :P however, my tracking is awful which is holding me back. I've been a Mercy main since day1 but terrible with her weapon. Until they came out with Lifeweaver! His kit sort of clicks with me and I can actually finish people off. His reload time and heal ramp up though feels rough. Is he played in top tier? I haven't done much research yet on him, just putting in the manual labor hours in learning to optimize him, though if he's not as good as I think, maybe I'm wasting my time?
@Flameysaur6 ай бұрын
@@ElectrifyMySoull Lifeweaver is kinda in a weird spot, but I'd say he's at least better than Mercy for most situations if you're set on healbotting. If you can get good with his pulls and platform then he definitely has more value than a Mercy. He is a lot more reflex based imo. I just see way too many Lifeweavers waste their pulls or put their teammates in unfavorable positions or not take advantage of the platform to mitigate some enemy ultimates. That being said, a lot of Mercy players tend to have an easier time with Moira, so I'd try her if you'd like, at the very least you'll get a feel for balancing damage and healing.

Feeding is any kind of free ult charge for the enemy. The ways you listed but also. Going up to a corner or high ground and spamming damage while your team is trying to regroup. You see this a lot in lower ranks. They don't realize that they are just charging there enemy healer ults and possibly the enemy tanks ult. While you are also making your self an easy target or at the very least revealing your location. Even worse is if you call them out on it, they point out their damage stat. Mean while being completely oblivious to the fact that you are calling them out for the trash damage they were just doing making their damage stat an unreliable metric as you have no way of telling how much of that damage is actually meaningful.

As a long time hardstuck silver support, I think the advice that "dying is the worst thing you can do in the game" fundamentally broke me, because a lot of times I'd be trying to run away as soon as I saw the team fight was lost, I'd end up dying way later than the rest of my team, and then my team would lose the disadvantaged 4v5 by the time I'm back and the same would happen, losing minutes of precious time. I recently got coached by a GM who told me "Don't bother running away with your picks, if all is lost dying quickly is the best thing you can do, so run towards their support guns blasting". And as it turns out, it worked, now losing one fight doesn't mean losing the next three as well, and I've been slowly climbing to gold.

If you're casual I say it's fine to think like that because you won't spend a lot of time on the game. However if you do want to be a little more sweaty and climb the easiest way is to just be more efficient and comfortable with your aim and communicate whatever it is you need in the comms while keeping your cool. Metal ranks are definitely more on the "I know this game more than you/I have a main in GM" type of vibe and can trigger a lot of people to rage. Just like any other team sport. You just need to be mechanically good, you don't necessarily need to know the meta or peel/dive/poke/etc. What you really need is to tell your team where you're going. Who is where and what ability you/them are going to use. Instead of "hey team let's run dive, please no Ana/Zen etc" because metal ranks typically aren't very good at being organized and team play. So most of the time that will just trigger them and made someone rage right at the start of the game. I know it's a long read... Doing shot calling isn't 100% going to work, but it's a good habit to get into and it will get easier the more you do it. If you're even more sweaty you will remember all the cool downs in the game and nail your ability timing, etc. That's really how I got to GM from metal ranks. It took me a while to realize, but I believe you certainly need to be very comfortable with your mouse and keyboard before you can climb. Because people in Masters and GM will punish you for mistakes in an instant. This is something I wish I knew earlier because this game has levels to it more than other FPS games being how fast and confusing it's abilities are and insane healing/hp pool. Even Shroud was hard stuck diamond tells you if you aim well you will climb, but you will peak if you don't communicate about cool downs and timing etc.

I think something that’s very important that you didn’t mention is being able to communicate without communicating. Being on the same page without anything being said. Very rarely are other people in voice chat. The teams I have the most success with, are those who communicate silently. We know what the other teammates are thinking, when they’re going to ult, when they’re going to push or fall back. You almost have to pay attention to determine what kind of players you have, and what the strategy is without words. It’s something that can’t be taught and just comes with time, but is a huge difference maker between winning and losing.

Okay, @Coach_Mills , but I have some questions. If the reasons for Silver not rising are related to them feeding, not knowing how to retreat... and among other things that are a lack of game knowledge... How can players with more than 2,000 hours of gameplay, or even more than that, remain stuck on the silver like that? Would it be considered some type of learning disability for players? stubbornness? bad habits? why look closely. It is scientifically proven that if a person has 10 thousand hours of theoretical and practical knowledge in a certain subject or something, they become a specialist in that area. 2 thousand hours is 1/5 of that, it's enough knowledge to be trivialized and considered something as superficial as feeding or not knowing how to retreat... So why are there players with so much time spent on the game, stuck together with the other 66% of players, who are currently stuck in the silver, since the Rank update? And I still question: How do you explain gold or even platinum players, who make exactly the same mistakes you listed about silver players in your video and move up easily and are in these higher ranks and even with less playing time or a smaller hero pool? ?

Its a mix of not getting much sr for a win so former gm 1 t500 players are stuck between masters and mid gm and some masters players are still in plat if they havent played much and they also rank up a lot slower because of the gm players and they basically play against other former masters players but with the plat icon. I was mid-low masters last season and I had to start high plat and am still diamond 3 right now. I always get 18-19% for a win no matter if expected or nothing only sometimes i get 21% for a hard fight or after 5 wins in a row I maybe get 20% but I always loose between -20 to -23% for a loss. (Also expected win/loss is sometimes just random) So If I go 50/50 I will actually rank down and not stay the same rank. Thats why its so damn slow even when you are about 60% win rate.
@ianchambers378 ай бұрын
@andirmiga I struggle with all of that stuff, too. If I win, it's between 6 and 20%(often get expected when its a tough fairly competitive game), but any losses are easily between 10 to 40% or so. Even brief win streaks barely budge the meter towards the next rank, but any losses heavily alter it. Feels like if i was to lose 5 in a row, then that would be a rank easily gone, but if I won 5 in a row? Maybe halfway to the next rank if lucky. Even if I go 50 50 or 2 and 1 it feels like I still go backwards more than forwards sadly.

In the diamond section Coach Mills said diamond players need to realize who's getting value. How do you figure that out in a game? I've struggled with that issue lately and playing tank it feels impossible to figure that out unless I'm watching a replay because I only look behind me before the fight starts most of the time. Is the secret in tracking where all 5 enemies are? I don't know how to do that when there's an enemy Sombra because she's always invisible until she's in my backline. I try to listen for her but sometimes the game is loud or I'm focusing on killing the enemies too much to concern myself with flankers.
@AtlisDe2 ай бұрын
There's a number of ways really. It's a little harder as a tank, but you should turn on the sound effects that indicates teammates deaths. Once you hear those it'll allow you time to realize something is going wrong and turn around. I play ram a decent amount, every now and again I'll check on my back lines. If sombra is in play, people should be positioned a little closer so teammates can peel. Check the scoreboard at times, see which teammate is getting the most kills, the most heals, the least deaths. If sombra has 20 kills and 2 deaths she's getting tons of value without pushback. If mercy rezzes tons of people, has near 10 k and 0 deaths, she's getting value. It's a good rule of thumb to try and track enemies in the sense of predicting when they might strike. If you haven't seen the sombra, reaper, or widow in a little bit it's best to stay on alert. Keep an eye on the support or dps that's out of position cause they'll be the one gets targeted (doesn't always work) as a support I can usually tell who I'll need to peel for.

To me it seems like what is key is understanding which aspect you need to improve. Bcs it's not all the same. Usually mechanics come before game sense. And mechanics alone can get you far, at least to plat. But then you hit a brick wall. Suddenly enemies are just capable enough to not let you destroy them just like that. Now you have to start working on other aspects, like consistency, playing as the underdog, target prioritization, etc. Bcs you could literally be in plat and have gm mechanics but not climb, if you're lacking some other key aspect and your awareness is bad.

I did all this naturally as i learned the game to get better,but the truth is you have to be diamond level to rank up on any rank, in that i mean ur mechanics and game sense have to ne enough to solo the lobby cause ur teammates arent doing anything, and i mean that people just dont play the game.Example: so many morias just fade for no reason and dont use heal orb even on themselves. Even as a support u have to do this, i couldnt get out of bronze until i learned solo the lobby as moria even with throwers. THE problem is that its like this for every rank but lower ranks is harder cause there just worse. [THIS IS MEANT FOR SOLO Q] if your in a group i dont know how u lose if ur been playing the game for a long time.
@engineergaming38309 ай бұрын
uh dude it isn't "harder for low ranks" if you have people that are having bad days,lag or anything really makes the already good players kill you faster than some reaper shooting you from longer range you need to learn how to work with your team even if they're shit if you can use them as a meatshield or a distraction that's a huge advantage and yeah if your moiras "don't use heal orb" just use the healthpacks or wait a sec for health regen? I mean it's not that hard honestly the update was really good for us

@@engineergaming3830 AGAIN I naturally came to that same advice, I play Tracer, so i dont use up team resources, so why does my team die still? Because ur teammates DONT WANT TO WIN. I literally mean that they dont do anything, they will purposley not Heal, use abilities/ults, or not take cover no matter the role.You can can carry a team of 4 bad players, You cannot carry a 4v5 starting at least higher silver, even top 500 struggle with this. If YOU are someone u can do this, congrats not only are u Gods gift to Overwatch, but ur aslo not supposed to be there anyways as u have the expierence to do that, BUT even then thats not the real issue. The REAL issue is that people use bronze accounts to sell to others or they want to stay bronze cause they dont want to rank up, so they throw on purpose. YOU ARE PLAYING WITH PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LOSE, EVEN IF U DONT WANT TO ACHIEVE A HIGH RANK, YOU WILL NOT BE PLAYING OVERWATCH AS INTENDED, ITS JUST NOT FUN. I only have ever played support and I’ve never left bronze. I just started playing about 3 months ago, or so? I play every single day of my life for at least 3 hours. I consider myself a decent player in bronze actually but I feel like my destiny is tied to my tanks ability. I often end up with tanks that rush in and die instantly by themselves or they just refuse to take any sort of cover to get healed when they are low or they run off away from the team to hunt for kills while the rest of us battle to move or defend a payload. When I find a good tank we will attempt to duo and it always goes poorly. Feels like the matches are harder so it’s pointless to try to pair up with someone. Discouraged to play with friends. Why do they do this to us? Whatever the case may be, but then the more I lose the further I sink into the madness of new players and it just gets worse and worse. Now I’m at like 50/50 win to lose ratio. My games are either a decisive win or a decisive loss. There are no close games. It’s always one way or the other now. It feels rigged sometimes… I can play a hero like mercy and get 20k or more healing, 1500 to 2000 boosted damage, 5 kills, 30 assists, and 2 deaths and still lose these games by a landslide. Idk, though. I probably just suck and this is me blaming others for it. I’m not sure anymore. 🤷♂️ Sorry for the rant. Just felt like bitching a little bit. Maybe there are others that feel the same way. Good luck everyone.

My support hero pool is ana zen and moira, and both ana and zen are these high impact supports but without any mobility which could mean i'm forced to only play moira if i want to survive a sombra or tracer consistently. And only playing moira won't get me too far because people will have a much easier time punishing me higher up in ranks.

The reason a pro is so much higher than a GM is kinda like a race. Pros have all maximized their times, so it is incredibly difficult to improve at all; and just a tiny increment creates a huge gap in skill. (And since in O2 skills/plays compound, it’s noticeable).
@angrybeaver11427 ай бұрын
I have a specific question about the advice you around minimizing characters. What happens when the hero’s me play aren’t meta? I play zen and mercy most, but it felt like people were really getting annoyed about me picking zen recently so I was trying to learn other supports. Same with mercy not being as good recently in peoples minds (although I have been able to get 12k heals on her, so it is confusing).
@immortaldev14896 ай бұрын
never pay attention to stats if you're looking to rank up, also, mercy isn't a very good support to climb with since she relies on her team instead of having individual impact. what'll have more impact, a mercy damage boosting a soldier missing all their shots, or landing an anti nade on the whole enemy team and sleeping the ulting genji. you should play more supports with carry potential like ana/bap/kiri to remove any potential of your team holding you back. Zen is a pretty good pick, but something i see a lot of low rank players do is just forget about their healing orb. you NEED to have it on someone 24/7, and you NEED to constantly be damaging to make up for your lack of heals. you're also playing a projectile hero, so you don't need to get up in their face to do damage, because you'll do the same amount from 30 meters away

So in the end: Bronze: play more to know the game and to react quicker and get some hardware that doesn't suck. Silver: same as bronze but less worse + work on fundamentals so u don't die for free so much (dont stagger, use cover, dont feed and so on). Focus on learning a character. Gold: same as silver. Mechanics start to matter. Work on synergies, counters. Favored and unfavoured matchups. Plat: Mechanics. Start to understand when u have advantage to push and the opposite (watch kill feed and CDs). Change positioning according to that. Diamond: Need great mechs. Good knowledge of counters and adapt. Adapt to strategy of the team (dive, poke, and brawl) or lack of it. Understand who's carrying the enemy team and find the win condition (f.e. deal with the uncontested zen in the backline). Masters: work on finding and eliminating mistakes/weaknesses. Find value, but don't overdo it. GM: you up there. Look for perfection.

I once watched a video like this from some c*nt who said for bronze: "Just turn your monitor on harr harr harr". It took me a long long time to get out of bronze and my top tips are: 1. Group up as best as possible. This will rarely be all 5, but if 2 or 3 of your team go in, go in with them! It's the best chance you'll have. 2. Use cover and wait to be healed up before "making a play". 3. Accept that you will be bronze forever. It will be a lovely surprise when you hit silver. 4. Focus on the above things and keep trying new heroes. If you, like me, want to be good at all the heroes, do the opposite. Pick one or two heroes and play nothing but them.
