Coaching Masterclass EP 2 - Steve McClaren of Newcastle United & England MIC'D UP

Steve McClaren is an English former footballer and current head coach at Newcastle United F.C. McClaren played for several clubs including Hull City, Derby County, Lincoln City, Bristol City and Oxford United.
After retiring from playing McClaren began his coaching career as a youth and reserve team coach at Oxford before he moved back to Derby County in 1995, where he was assistant manager. In early 1999, McClaren moved to Manchester United as assistant to Alex Ferguson winning the famous 'Treble' in his first half season.
McClaren later went to manage at football clubs including Middlesbrough, FC Twente, VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County the England national team and now Newcastle United.
McClaren developed the reputation as one of the most tactically astute coaches in the country.

I'm so sorry... no wonder why so long England... doesn't do well in world cup... what did he coaching... more like the empire/ref rather the a coach... without any improvement on player decision making ..just by chance i n game situation.. no concept been applied by the players.. only ball possession.. that all..

really your judging the total England coaching by ONE drill. THE WHOLE point of the drill is to practice Possession and winning the ball back. for possession the point is there is only one ball on the pitch if your team has it more then the other team you reduce the other teams ability to score. The other thing the drill teaches is how to press 6 players with 3 and win the ball back. NOW one team with the white bibs was Far superior in both control passing movement AND pressing. Looked like reserves vs first team. BUT Football is not a game of set plays and stoppages it is a fluid game and players need to make decisions ON there own. This drill is NOT to instruct tactics but but to practice technique. These drills are used by teams such as Barcelona and ManCity under Pep Guardiola so you going to tell me he doesn't know how to coach also. there are PLENTY of Tactical instruction also but just not this drill. This drill DOES prepare the players technique so when ASKED to play out of the back and to play to beat a high press the skills used in this drill translate direct to that tactic. Now of course managers also need to explain the tactics of defending deep playing out of as high press and then counter attacking. BUT that is another training issue.

This is not even decent coaching, compared to Frank Hoek's this pales in comparison. Too much of a passion merchant. I don't see him stopping the session to constantly make corrections to their mistakes or to show them what he's specifically looking for.
