I tried to modify my hockey helmets before, but didn't come up with a design I liked. I thought with my new heat gun I could give it another shot. What do you guys think of the mod, is it smart? Too dangerous? Let us know in the comments.

Not bad mod!! I like it! Looking good on Jeremy’s helmet… on my ccm helmet I didn’t mount on helmet I hate having GoPro sticking out so high and getting too much attention so I strap GoPro on bottom of ccm FV1 face shield so it’s more like bite mount. I love it! I should make a video about it to share

I think Jeremy's version is really great. The only that threw me off a bit was that it looked a bit tilted to the right. Except that it is really nice. A few years ago there was a company producing a small actioncamera for ice hockey helmets called the UHWK.

I actually do have a way to improve the setup. Get a normal gopro headstrap attachment and put the helmet on over it with the cut out. Bam! Now you can adjust anyway you like and it'll be on nice and stable

I am designing a 3D print mount for gopro on hockey helmet with a Flexible fillament so it would absorb the hits etc. Will see how it goes. It's going to be custom, so it would blend and be as close to helmet, but each manufacturer probably will need some adjusments. I was planning to make a hole as well, but understood it's dangerous as hell.

I think there were two problems with his setup. 1) He didn't give the tape/glue long enough time to set. The camera wasn't tightened on the hinge enough (shaky-cam!)

Combination of both designs but use a fiberglass shell that connects to the top of the helmet. It'll hold better and look more streamlined.

My set-up is like Haden's and it has been knocked off once or twice by accident, but I don't bring it out to league games, just pick-up hockey. If Gopro teamed up with someone to make a helmet though I'd definitely consider buying one.

I suggest using one of the mini spycams which doesn’t have huge housings. OR disassemble the GoPro, so you can distribute the electronics along the inside of the helmets hollow sides. I did this and it works great. Even made one for my goalie helmet. For example, Amazon has those mini hidden cameras with 4K resolution, with a tiny camera on a 6 inch cord to the recording unit. Great content Coach!

@Machtyn

I think you are correct, GoPro, CCM, or somebody needs to design a safe helmet with a quality action camera in it. There are already a LOT of people recording their games, practices, etc. In my area (there's only one ice hockey rink for an entire city / region), we have referees and players who use the strong sticky tape, and it works well. I really enjoy the channel, "Head Down Hockey". So, yeah, the strong sticky tape will work (give it time to set). But it would be better for the helmet mfg's to make a quality safe helmet.

Just re-thought this comment, a 3D printed mount may be too fragile (if hit with a puck, some r&d would need to be done to test it) or too bulky (thickness = strength with printed plastic) however a thin piece of aircraft grade Aluminium plate bent into the right shape using the afore mentioned screws to attach it could be a better option.
