I always treated skating in the sense that if I'm too afraid to fall, I won't get better. The day that I stop falling on the ice is the day I stop trying to become a better skater.

Thank you so much for posting these! I used to figure skate competitively when I was younger but when I was 13 I had an awful accident falling out of a quad and I shattered my kneecap and strained my ankle. I had to endure surgery’s and casts and braces and 5 YEARS of physical therapy at 17 (14 days away from 18 I’m pretty proud abt that lol) I finally got the ok from my doctors to be able to skate again. And thanks to you I’m able to relearn my skills without having to pay hundreds to have my coach re teach me. I’m starting back competitions in 2024 on the track I’m in right now ! I’m so excited thank you so so much

Good tutorial! I know what helped me the most with my crossovers is to think of it as alternating one foot glides, with the foot crossing over. So if you can't do solid one foot glides, you won't be able to do crossovers. Again, while this is usually seen as an "easy" move, in reality it can be quite complex, so to any beginners dont be discouraged if you can't get it yet! (If it helps, it took me around 3 months of practice to be able to do them well)

Hey, thanks for sharing the encouragement for people just learning. Sometimes skaters feel like the only one struggling so it is always good to feel a sense that there are others in it with you.

I am a beginner and I am very happy seeing your comments about one foot glides. I actually had knee pain stopping me from learning for 1+ years. But after finding a really good physical therapist and putting a lot of thinking and going back to skating, I actually found out that practicing one-foot glide and adjusting my boots and blade to the right position using one-foot glide as a test, is actually helping me with my knee pain! (I think the right alignment of the leg and the whole body is very important, as well as building strength in them muscles and doing so in the correct alignment.) What an interesting biomechanical problem! I am a slow learner and I will enjoy my slow journey in skating and I enjoy practicing one-foot glide a lot! Thanks again!

Hey Coach Julia, I finally nailed down the crossover during my lunch skate today after just 4 weeks of skating thanks to your two video lessons. :) I'm way stronger on my left side than my right side but I'm a natural leftie so that's to be expected. The things from your videos that helped me the most were using my hands for aerodynamic balance, leaning in to the turn and using the back foot to push off a little. That ended up being the key to me. I've been way too focused on the crossing foot which is obviously important but I had an epiphany today that the back foot is actually the active control foot once the crossing foot touches down. Once I had the crossover down, I was able to skate continuously for the first time today without stopping into my turns and restarting my skating motion as I exited. Thanks for your help. Also, I had no idea you were injured and had ankle surgery last year as I've been selectively searching for your videos up until now. I looked at all of your videos on your main page today and found your injury updates. Glad to see you are recovered and doing better now.

Thanks, this helped me start linking my crossovers. What helped me in particular was to practice gliding on the new inside leg as long as possible after crossing over. Then as you start to slow down, a little push to the outside and you flow right into your next crossover.

Good video. Have been learning foward cross overs in groups lessons for about 2 months now and my instructor started teaching us the more advance technique fairly early on as he couldn't stand the "elephant stomp" where you step over the inside foot. Another exercise she got us to do to get used to sliding the inside foot back and under was to do swizzles (lemons) but at the end one foot would cross behind the other foot and tuck in.

Thank you for making the videos. Crossovers are quite challenging for me. I do rather well with the first push and start the step over; however, as soon as I do, my body seems to go into a panic mode. When my outside foot crosses and then touches the ice, my inside leg suddenly straightens and then I'm gliding on two feet. That 2nd push never has a chance -- very frustrating! Any thoughts for a nervous senior adult? (Learning to ice skate is on my "bucket list" and I'm not ready to give up. Just turned 73.)
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 5 жыл бұрын
Just saw this, wow, good for you getting started with skating. Part of your unique task is overruling years of your body’s safety reflexes that tell you that gliding is dangerous. So you have to be patient with yourself, and keep pushing your boundaries little by little so your subconscious learns that this gliding sensation is fine. The same thing happens with spinning. It is about training your brain as much as it is about training your muscles.

I love my instructor, but sometimes she doesn't know how to explain the mechanics of things helpfully like this, and these videos always give me the info I need to understand what I'm doing. Do you have any advice for someone who's struggling with crossovers (among other things) out of fear? logically I know that falling is part of the process but I can't make my body take that step over unless I'm holding onto something.
@CoachJulia

Awe, that is sweet. I am so glad you find my videos helpful. As to your question...that’s tough. Skating requires you to push past fear, or what feels impossible and just MAKE your body do it. I don’t have any magic answers. 😬

@CoachJulia

It is quite possible that your skates are either to big, to loose or not sturdy enough. it is hard for me to say which, without seeing them, your best bet is to go to a rink pro shop or skate fitting shop, of check with a coach.

Please could you explain the difference between a crossover and a progressive run. Does the foot not cross in the progressive run?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
For a progressive, the outer-pushing foot will make the push, then land on the ice parallel to the inner skating foot, then slide across the front. Rather than pushing and coming all the way to the inside before landing on the ice. I hope that makes sense.
@TheGarboesque

Don't know if you would still be replying on here but is the initial first foot forward here more of a pick up and slide in front rather than picking it up completely and stepping it over? I'm having trouble with crossovers feeling very jolty and clumsy - so I'm wondering if thinking if this is more of a slide forward I should try this rather than the big step over!
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
Hey! So this is a pick up completely and lift over kind of movement. What you are describing with a slide is more similar to an ice dance ‘progressive’ movement.

my Russian trainer teaches me that during the crossover the knees should be closed, the back leg tightly pressed against the front leg when they are crossed. and your legs are spread a great distance. we are also taught to step one skate over another from above, keeping the foot close, rather than circling the foot in front. we consider it a mistake. I hope I explained clearly

@@CoachJulia One day!! If you're ever in Northern Ireland I'll be there, there's only one rink in this whole country so we can't go wrong 🙈 might have to settle for video links for now though 😂

when i'm doing forward crossovers, sometimes i feel like my leg is too far ahead of me and i'll fall on my butt, but maybe i just need to focus harder ): feels like i'm skating on shaky stilts, but it's not like my legs are weak b/c i've done martial arts since i was a kid aghh

I've been watching a ton of skating tutorials and I've tried it a few times myself, but I think my issue is balancing on skates. Everyone seems to already know how to do it when they get on the ice, but I tend to wobble a lot. I can balance on roller blades though :/

Is it your ankles wobbling or your body? If it is your ankles then it means you need more supportive skates. If it is your body, then you need to work on core strength and probably are positioning.

@@CoachJulia I think its a mix of both. Skating here is really expensive so I don't get to go often - however this year my goal's to at least be able to skate on a basic level. Ankle wise I tend to sprain them a lot, aside from the fact I use rental skates. Core strength and positioning also definitely needs work since I realize I tend to lean forward or backward when I'm on skates.

Yay! Another video! I will definitely try the undercut spiral! That should help me get more extension with my undercut. My friend says I need to sit down more in my crossovers. Also, I can't figure out how to make them more fluid looking. Maybe figuring how to the lean into the circle would help. I just feel I look overall frumpy doing these. I attached a short video of my crossovers if you have any quick suggestions... I'm in the green top in the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6CUn2tultOfaLs

Hey, so I checked out your video, the undercut postition will definitely help you. The smooth look and feel come from being able to really extend your two push postitions. The outside push extending all the way from the hip while getting down into your quads, and the under push extending in a Forward flexed position. The do look solid! Just work on stretching out the legs so you look like you have long supermodel legs. 😄
