I'm brand new to the game. My first course, I lost 10 of the 12 balls I took. Playing the balls that I find is 100% necessary. The ball always hitting the same isn't important to me yet. I get the same enjoyment if one ball goes 30 yards shorter than the one I hit on the last hole. My shots are so bad at the moment that consistency just isn't important at this time

I caddied years ago, we were ALWAYS taught to set the clubs as you said, woods at the top, short irons progressively at the bottom. This helps not only to protect the clubs themselves, you are not constantly searching for a club as well as knowing instantly if you are missing one.

The only problem is if you go from trolly to cart you have to rearrange it. If it’s set up the way he says and you put it on a cart the short clubs will be behind the tall clubs.

I am lucky. I did club fitting and club repairs for years. I put my own equipment together to suit me. What did I learn for all those years? Most people have no clue why they have this or that set of clubs and no clue if their clubs suit their capabilities. In my youth, late teens and early 20s I could hit the ball well, long, and straight, mostly and had a 6 handicap. My Dad taught me club making. I did attend a club builder's course. I just wanted to know more. 28yrs in the Army, infantry, a family, deployments, the golf went on hold. I'm 65 now, retired, completely, and fairly beat up physically. Three lower back surgeries will reduce your game in a way you cannot imagine. My sticks now? 13 degree 3W (as a driver), 5W, 7W, 9W, Ping Zing 2 irons, 6-PW, wide soled 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges. Senior shafts in everything except the lower three wedges, which are R- flex, and everything is graphite shafted. Yes, game improvement clubs are essential. Last year, I got my handicap to 12 and I can live with that. My rule #1? Hit it in the short grass, no matter which club you must use to get it there. Rule #2? Practice chipping and putting a LOT. Rule #3? No hero shots. If in trouble get it to the short grass. I have tried to simplify the game. Loved your analysis in this video. Spot on.

I play 20+ year old Titleist blades 2-PW. I hardly consider using these clubs as anything to do with ego because I learned with blades 30 years ago and have been hitting with these for almost 20. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you flush a forged blade. So pure. As for the rest of your list, I agree. Especially with staying consistent with your ball choice and club organization in the bag.

Agreed on the set up of clubs in the bag, that just made sense to me when I started playing to put the longer clubs at the top. I have a 4 hybrid but am comfortable with the other irons. I agree on the balls but I’ve only started this recently as like a lot of amateurs I have a tendency to lose balls. I’ve gone round the last few rounds though with 1 ball so starting to buy one brand at a time to see how they perform for me

One thing I've learned is to keep the carrybag as light as possible, it makes a big difference for my game during the last holes if I carry my ultralight bag with 9-10 clubs, just enough balls and 33cl waterbottle, compared to carrying my full size carry bag with 14 clubs, big water bottle, 12 extra balls and other stuff from previous rounds. My full carry bag makes me exhausted during the last four five holes and it affects my precision and concentration making me do silly unessesary mistakes. Keep your carrybag light, play better golf despite leaving out your longer clubs at home. It's kind of a sport in itself deciding which clubs, and how many, you're going to put in the ultralight bag. :)

If you play on a course with a lot of trees, long irons are critical. I play a Mizuno Fli-Hi 2 iron. 200 metres without getting up in the branches is worth plenty of shots a round. Hybrids are also more prone to hooking. Long utility irons have much of the benefit of hybrid forgiveness with more shot control.

Great video. Agree on the crazy expensive shafts. The stock shaft selection is usually good enough for the amateur to find one that will deliver good strikes. Shafts are so player dependent that we need to find the shaft that minimizes our bad strikes, no shaft will correct a bad swing. All these shafts are tested on robots...enough said. Have never been able to hit a hybrid, but the 7 wood has been great.

I can hit 8 and shorter and 5 and longer pure 9/10 shots. The 6-7 irons are very prone to hitting fat or thin. I’d rather have a full 5 iron into the green than a full 7. Because the 5 iron will leave me in a good spot, but the 7 has a 3/10 chance of catching it in the teeth and skulling it over the green.

Me personally,I have my woods at the top I have 1 hybrid in the bag personally I don’t think too much of hybrids and utility irons, I have my irons in the middle of the bag, my tip is looks and feel of the irons are everything it’s the difference between scoring well on the course and losing distance because of choosing the wrong clubs, I have my wedges at the bottom of my bag, I have 2 wedges in the bag everyone’s different I prefer a 56/12 and a 60/8, my putter sits at the top with the woods so it’s easy to collect when you get to the green. Ball: he’s correct in terms of ball use, but use any foreign ball type/brand for the practice range or the warm up area and them separate from your competition golf balls. My biggest pet peeve is that if you want to avoid all mistakes get fitted it’s not rocket science and stick to 1 brand plus use wooden tees instead of plastic tees as they will leave marks on your woods.

Sorted. Around the time this video was released, although I wasn't part of the Lockey army yet back then. Started using just one ball type after I got fitted for new irons last July (the big reset of my golf journey) around 70 compression fits my swing well. started on the AD333, but then Urethane skin feels just a bit nicer with putting: enter the TM Tour Response. Shortly after I got a second hand hybrid 5 - but not for the 'proper' reason but because a frozen shoulder prevented be from getting enough distance on the old 5 iron. I'm glad I did though, because it's a wonderful thing, much more forgiving, so the end result is the same. Got stock shafts too. No drink is still the odd mistake occasionally (but no issue either on 9 winter holes) but food-wise I'm totally bananas too. On the bonus tip: I have the Ogio silencer to immobilize my clubs.

Agree with all your tips - been playing regularly since Feb now WHS 6.7 and just turning 55 - I’ve just purchased my third hybrid replacing irons 4 and 3 (and 5/4 wood) Incredibly forgiving clubs. In the winter I play any old gash YELLOW ball it really doesn’t matter IMO (yellow means you can find them so much easier when mud splattered) maybe I need to try and play just one ball type in summer as you suggest. Food and drink always (at least 1 litre of water in those summer heat waves)….what about glove types and condition?

Great points: Use the same golfball, get the shaft that fits your swing speed (senior), use woods under 6 iron (I use 5 only for punch shots out of trees), carry water and snacks, bag setup I’ll try but I also use iron covers (why spend $1200 on irons and immediately bang them together)

1. Guilty of using a variety of premium balls from different brands. Too curious for my own good when it comes to ball performance, so I buy 5-10 dozen at a time and spend the season with that ball (provided that they LAST the entire season). 2. Got rid of long irons AND hybrids. Never warmed up to the "wood-like" hybrids of recent years, so just goiung back to high-lofted fairway woods. 3. I certainly HAVE been accused of confusing golf with shopping. 4. Plenty of granola and bars and graham crackers in the bag... for the squirrels! They come running when I'm on the course! 5. The ONLY way to put clubs in a stand bag is short clubs at the bottom. But when the stand bag is on a motor cart, the positions have to be reversed so the short clubs are closer to you when the bag is mounted and strapped in.

The way you put your clubs in the bag depends on whether or not you walk or ride the majority of the time. I can't remember the last time I walked a round. Putting my clubs in the bag like you said would be so annoying as you would have to reach over and around your driver/woods to get to your irons and wedges.

Great video Coach! I am a low single digit hcp with a 115+ SS and irons are the best part of my game. I play 2 hybrids instead of long irons unless I'm playing links, because it makes scoring easier from long approaches/Par 3's. It boggles my mind when I see slow players using long irons. Play what you like for sure. I support that, but don't understand playing a club you physically can't. I see it multiple times every time I play. 4,5,6 irons that only get 20-30 feet off the ground and can't hold a green. Just don't understand it.

Coach, great advice. My advice is to never spend a dime on any club fittings before you learn how to swing a club. Also, never buy expensive gb unless you have a game. Golf bags, if for some reason you intend on working out during a round of golf and stressing your shoulders out.Never purchase a carrie bag, unless you want to play a par 3 coarse. A cart bag will be better for organization and have a place for your putter. Don't be convinced you'll be able to walk and carry all that wait and maintain a solid round of golf. There's a reason for caddies. Good luck everyone!

I just got a 6,5,4 hybrid (took the ego out of my bag) and play the same brand and model golf ball every time. My game took a huge leap. I would add one more. Ditch the 3 wood and get a 5 wood. The same players that could benefit from hybrids should be playing a 5 wood instead of a 3 wood. I even replaced my blade wedges with cavity back wedges. Huge improvement.

I do and I know better but get out of the habit of doing it. Thanks because you've convinced me to move up on my fairway woods. I carry the same driver you have and Ping 3 and 4 fairways. Great clubs but a few years old now. I do hit them well. But when I fitted up to my latest set of ping cavity backs, I dumped the 3 iron but kept the 4 which I only use to punch out from under problems. I do still use my 5 because I like it. My intentions are to replace the ping 3 and 4 with a the match to the paradym in the 3 and 5 as they don't make a 4 wood or rescue as best I can tell. My worst set ups in my bag is having too many balls. All top quality but different. Today that stops. Stops too is picking up every found ball and putting it in the bag rather that taking it out for your own shag bag. I used to have a ball I'd use on courses that needed distance and a different ball for putting. I know the best ball for me and how it reacts but it got to be what new sleeves do I have in the bag and marking and using those. It takes a few holes to figure out what small differences and that's not good. Thanks. That was a very cool video. Well produced with silly graphics and explanations that aren't needed. One of the best channels I've found lately that I like and get. I just keep so many channels subbed that I feel are a benefit. So, I think yours, so far, is that good so another of my subbed channels has to go. That's the one thing I'd add to a channel like yours is to remind people to not have 50 golf tip channels you watch. Worst game killer I know. Look forward to watching past vids and new post. And I also see a lot of players spend lots of money on their driver and then they have a cheap nasty putter that is probably bent, makes no sense when the putter is the most used club in the bag at least once or twice every hole.

Golf Bag Tips: Always have clean golf clubs for top performance. Rain proof... rain hood, 2 towels, umbrella, light rain jacket, extra pair socks, Organized.., have a couple small ziplock freezer bags. Things like bug spray, sun protection, Band-Aids, aspirin. At least 2 golf gloves in ziplock bags. Tees, balls, ball marker (coins) and a divot repair tool and a sharpie marker, also tool for soft spikes and replacement spikes if needed and extra shoe strings. Nothing worse than breaking one before teeing off. Rangefinder and extra battery. Some form of water and energy bar. Sounds like a lot but really isn't. At the end of ur round... ALWAYS make sure you have all the clubs you started with... Nothing worse than losing $$$ clubs.

Per ShotScope data, my percentage of times I hit the green with various clubs: 7W: 18% 18 Hybrid:0% 3 Iron: 17% 5 Iron: 23% 7 Iron: 37% Some people love Hybrids. I'm not one of them. I might consider adding a 9 wood, though.

I wasn't a fan of that tip either. Game improvement irons have delofted so much that the current 5 or 6 iron is what the old 3's and 4's used to be. Get lessons to have better form, make better contact, keep your speed up. The blade dismissal seemed propaganda-ish, players could benefit from the real loft and feedback provided by blades. I've seen other YT channels during fittings, they hit blades better. They were surprised with that result at the time as they had been swayed by corporate marketing.

@@tedzink4574 I know some people who love hybrids, and carry a lot of them. I have seen others who love woods, and who carry down to a 13 wood. Still others love irons, and who hit them off the tee. The point is, none of these are "right" or "wrong". Everyone needs a setup with good gapping between clubs, and with clubs they feel comfortable with. Anyone that tells you that there is "one way", and that everyone should use that exact setup is wrong.

@@tedzink4574I’ve never intentionally played “blades” but I started golfing in college around 2012 with a set of early 90s Scotts that I picked up at a garage sale for $25. They were definitely forged, it said so on the hosel, and from what I can remember they looked an awful lot like what you’d call “blades.” But I don’t know if that was a thing back then. I think golf clubs were just golf clubs. There might’ve been cavity backs around, but they weren’t that. Anyway, i hit them decently as a brand new golfer. I don’t think blades penalize you as much as people say they do, now I have a set of game improvement irons because I found a full set of 2014 cobras with a full size driver and a Scotty Cameron putter for $150. I don’t notice a big difference outside the de-lofting with the irons. But the driver, 5w, and the putter are a serious improvement over the old blade putter and traditional 1W that came with my old set.

Agree to all the tips except the first one. If $500 shafts aren’t gonna make a difference, then playing the same ball is also not going to make a big difference. If I’m a 3 handicap cap maybe it’s true but then maybe and expensive shaft and long irons are better. If the message is for the average golfer then play whatever ball you find. Maybe stick to a common type, like spin vs distance but not the exact same ball. Great video! Thanks
