Hey Coaches, Do any of you use sequential play calling during your games? If so, how do you go about doing it? Is it something you plan during the week, or more of a feel thing? I'd love to hear ya'lls thoughts.
@jeffreymolinaro41286 жыл бұрын
Coach McKie as a wing t guy who has incorporated spread formations into the concept, I would say it's always a feel thing. Wing t offense is designed on the idea of defensive conflict. In other words, whatever reaction the defender makes he is wrong. Traditionally, to do that you would count defenders and start by attacking 3rd defender out from center and see his reaction. I tend to call plays off the point of attack defenders reaction and who is making the tackle. For example, belly iso, watching playside end, if he is up field and inside backer making tackle because of flow, then we have tackle trap ctr. If olb making tackle, then we have our belly 2nd man through sweep. If de squeezes, then we will log him and run opt or keep pass or boot pass. All interrelated weak side running plays in wing t. Only time I script is formationally if I want to see how a deefebse adjusts to the formations, but the play calling still based on reaction.

I've run split back veer and single wing. We always start with a base play, then try to organize the rest of the offense into an "if-then" sheet. Basically we try to imagine every adjustment that a defense might make to stop the base play and have a predetermined answer for it. So for instance if the defense is stopping ISV by Scrape exchange, then run base dive Lbs overpursuing, then run counter Safeties flying up to the alley, then call play action etc. It makes game planning easier as the game plan is somewhat built into the offense. We try to have one "answer " for every problem and to have one answer be able to address multiple problems if possible.

Hey Coach, why do you call your Receivers: L, Y, R ?
@rileyblack44153 жыл бұрын
We always used to script the first 12 plays for the first drive of the game. If the driver ends before then, we would do away with the rest. If it goes longer than 12 plays, we were doing our job a little too well on offense...

I’m a coach in Delaware (which as you know the Wing T originated) and I LOVE incorporating Wing T plays into all offenses most teams here have adjusted to the spread but it’s still amazing to hit the counters and packer sweeps
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Webb, I'm slowly being brought over to the idea of incorporating some Wing-T runs in the spread. Do you have any materials you think I should look at to get better at the Wing-T runs? I want to learn as much as possible about the Buck Sweep. Would love it if you could point me in the right direction.
@spartanQB107 жыл бұрын
Coach McKie yes coach do you have an email I can reach you at? And you seriously should consider implementing some wing T in the spread especially for teams using a spread to make up for a lack of size.. our recent D2 state champion is a public school of 500 kids and won their 7th state title using wing T blocking and back motion, impressive when executed right

Coach McKie A tip that I used when I made the adjustment to the shotgun wing t was to look at plays ran away from the traditional tight end side of the formation. Hopefully that helps in any kind of way.
@erickilpatrick52657 жыл бұрын
at 7:18 to 7:21 also incorporate the seam route with the RPO action. Make it look like your snag first, then have the slot plant that foot and open his hips and get vertical up the seam. TOUCHDOWNS galore.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
+Eric Kilpatrick You aren't lying coach. We wouldn't use it as a RPO. We would use it as a Pop Pass.
@darpinian17 жыл бұрын
I use seam as a sequential play tagged along with using the Y to continuously crack the Outside linebacker and pulling the CB during my Jet and Rocket calls. Once I get that CB and LB used to getting pulled out of plays and crack blocked....we fake that so the CB stays at home to stop the jet/rocket, the LB is anticipating the crack then the Y hits the Seam route. Its a money play for sure.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Darpinian, So you use that as a Pop Pass type deal?
@darpinian17 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its depends on the look we expect. We call it crack seam when we know the safety is play the run too hard, it lets the receiver know to get deep, we call it crack pop when we want the pass right over the LB who anticipates the run. Its usually called by us from the sideline based on what we saw the previous play. The joys of the Wing T is that I get to counter call vs players as opposed to defenses.

I love it how you broke down the concepts of the Formation. Keep up the good work Coach. Can you do a segment on RPO
@jacobphillips14837 жыл бұрын
Coach, I absolutely think sequential play calling is devastating. I've seen it on my teams, particularly in the run game. I'm an OL guy so I love getting downhill, but I think when those three or four plays look exactly the same it keeps them guessing. As a DC, my strategy would be to take away the play you do best and align our defense to hopefully give us a chance vs. the others. Thanks for sharing!

I coach at a Wing-T school, so I have some understanding of sequential play calling. One of the important components of the Wing-T is the use of a Wingback to put the DE in conflict. Since you don’t have that, it might be hard for your Tackle to base block a stud DE. A suggestion I have for your second play is to have the Tackle pass set to invite the DE upfield.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Tongue, Would an off-set tight end take the place of a wing back? And great suggestion on the pass setting with the tackle. I'm going to mess with that in the Spring to see if it works better. Thanks for the advice.
@randytongue7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could use an offset Tight End to block down on the DE. To me an off-set Tight End is a Wingback. It’s just a matter of personnel.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
I got you. Know, can I say I'm a Wing-T guy if I am in an off set look and run buck sweep? Because I freaking love Buck sweep. I've been studying it the past couple of weeks.

I would say you’re a Wing-T guy when BuckSweep is the first play that you teach. Here’s a video of some ways to run BuckSweep out of shotgun that might interest you. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/n37HhX9maqyVna8

I ran a lot of your RPO stuff last year... it worked well for us at the middle school level. I want to get better at coordinating the entire season though... what to learn first (after the basics of stance and angles)... what plays to focus on first, how large of a playbook is needed to be successful, do I teach sequence first, air raid, or just RPO.... if you had a seminar, I would be there in a heartbeat! This is the type of football I can hang my hat on, but I am always looking to get better at the coaching progression aspect of it throughout the season.
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach, I don't think you need a large playbook at all. Just continue to focus on the basics and rep the plays you usually have. I did a series on the plays I think middle schoolers need to know in order to be successful at the Air Raid. Give it a look. And I'm looking into creating a course on the Air Raid and installing it. Would you be interested in something like that if I did it?

Love the content coach. I've thought about pairing plays and this is the perfect trio. What's your opinion on pairing plays? I believe UT does it which makes them go at such a fast pace. I think if you pair these plays and use them in the same series you drive down the field with ease
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
+Campbell McCauley Coach McCauley, Thank you for the kind words. I agree with you on pairing plays. I do think it makes you go faster. I think you can pair counter with power and power with buck. Add a couple of RPOs into the mix and you have 90 percent of your offense.

yeah chip runs his plays like that at least in his college offense(see kenjon varner 400 yard rushing game against usc. i think it was because usc kept running man 2 or cover 2 its been awhile but i think he may have had a more presnap read to his offense cuz they would come to line and see if the quick call was there and then if it wasnt they would call a play from the sideline, but they did run a fair bit of rpo plays. his offense was also based on the inside zone but he didnt always push motion his back because he wanted to run the ball more and ran sum triple option out of that look. also he didnt run a two back backfield that much he used receiver motions to do the same thing tho
@CoachMcKie7 жыл бұрын
Coach Thornton, I remember that game. Barner had a massive day on the ground. I wonder if Chip only sets up his game planning by formation and then a couple of plays from within that formation. I want to say I heard Noel Mazzone talk about him doing that and that allowed him to go faster than anyone else in college football. Have you heard anything like that?
@jakethornton48567 жыл бұрын
idk how many plays kelly had in each formation. im not an actual coach i wud like to be and i study the game a lot. i am more of a pro style fan but i have been researching the spread thats how i came across ur channel. i love the chess match of adjustments and tbh i havent found a lot of resources online about his offense that really explain his play calling philosophy they always just talk about his base plays(inside zone, read option, bubble screen, bubble pop) but i have watched a lot of his games and i know his passing offense had some other more complex plays. i have tried to find a more in depth explanation of his offense but idk how. if i end up finding something ill send a link tho

@CoachMcKie6 жыл бұрын
Coach, We have not. It's something I'm looking into for next year.
@dylanbreshears2225 жыл бұрын
Looking to run something similar to this next year. Something I have been looking at is throwing the swing route to the back that goes in motion after we fake the inside zone, I think it will help draw the attention of backers or whoever else is supposed to have flat coverage(depending on their alignment). I believe this should help open up the TE snag as well as make them account for that man so that "catty" will be even more open in the middle of the field. My question is... Should that work? Will adding that swing route as a designed no read play be effective, and/or help with the next plays in the sequence?
@CoachMcKie5 жыл бұрын
That should work coach. Anything to get the eyes of the defender off his key.
